Hi Pam. I was the same but there have been a few recently that have interested me. Have to say, even though I`m only 12% through Mr Mercedes so far, I`m really enjoying it.

OK Adrian, will bear that in mind. I have a huge pile of existing paperbacks to read first, but there are a few older Kings among them so I will line those up before long.

Loved Warm Bodies. The film was good, but the book was even better. :)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Long Mars (The Long Earth, #3) by Terry Pratchett

I've just finished reading The Long Mars by Terry Pratchett and Stephen Baxter - it's far from a great read, but I am enjoying the series:

Is it your first reading of Lord of the Rings, Natasha?

message 9576: by Natasha (new)

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments Patti (baconater) wrote: "Is it your first reading of Lord of the Rings, Natasha?"

Yes, Patti! I would never have read it. I always felt I wouldn't enjoy that kind of book (fantasy, elves, ??).

It's my father's favourite book. And a friend of mine spent two days solidly reading it instead of revising, right before the final exams for his degree. But I really didn't think it was my kind of book.

What made me cave in ultimately was a thread on kboards.com, where people posted their five favourite books of all time. The Lord of the Rings featured over and over and over again. ...

I'm only 8% in so far, and most of that has been preface.

message 9577: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Lord of the Rings is a fantastic read, but it does make you work for it. Tolkien likes his journeys :-)

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments A great read. Just skip the entire Tom Bombadil section.

message 9579: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I so agree, Rosemary. I've read the entire trilogy 5 times but the iambic pentameter of the Bombadil stuff sticks in my teeth. Goldberry should have kicked him out!

Yes, it has a weird beginning, rather like The Hobbit in style, but when it gets going, it's very different, though you do get the odd travelogue bit (Tom Bombadill for example - they did right in the films to cut that out!)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments An ex-boyfriend of mine always said it needs to be re-read whilst smoking dope. I recently read a marijuana study that might give some weight to that argument. Apparently, dope helps you to experience things for what feels like the first time or some such. No idea where I found the study or I'd link to it.

message 9582: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Dave just reminded me where he read that about dope and then told me about it.

This book.

The Botany of Desire: A Plant's-Eye View of the World

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Just finished The Abduction of Mary Rose - I enjoyed it, but would only give 3 stars due to punctuation and grammar issues. Not sure what kindle book to read next, have only got 60 pages in my paperback too.

Nigel Bird (nigelbird) | 167 comments Our Souls at Night is rather special. I found it moving and powerful and was amazed at the momentum generated from such a simple idea and construction. Especially recommended if you need a lift.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just looked at this, Nigel. Shame it's £6.49 for the kindle edition. I think more than twice at this price, poor old pensioner that I am.

message 9586: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Little Black Lies Little Black Lies by Sharon Bolton which I thought was okay, but not as good as the other one of hers I read.

Just started some more Utreding about with Death of Kings (The Saxon Stories, #6) by Bernard Cornwell Death of Kings

Also started rereading Coming Up for Air Coming Up for Air by George Orwell

Agree. Which is why I got my copy from the library. I'm going to try and use the library more this year.

And as an aside, I definitely want to read more of his books as I've heard some great things about them. If I can't get them in the library, I reckon they'll still be worth the price of entry.

message 9589: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I live in a village with a fortnightly library bus which parks up for 20 minutes and if you miss the slot, hard cheese!

message 9590: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Yes, they are curtailing a lot of those services too. They are 'streamlining' the libraries where I live and those are the services that are under the axe.

message 9591: by Nigel (new)

Nigel Bird (nigelbird) | 167 comments That's a bit sad. One of my main reasons for using the library more (or intending to) is so that I can give my support and then make genuine protest if the service comes under threat. What's it like on a library bus? Do they pick the books that sell well, or tailor them to their users? Am curious.

message 9592: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments They tend to be the popular stuff. Which means if you want anything out of the ordinary you have to order it and wait for the next visit following receipt of the postcard which tells you they have it. They don't buy much new stuff either, except for the new best sellers.
