Steven | 173 comments had a great start to reading in 2016 with Alex Marwood's new book The Darkest Secret which has set the bar high for the year. Now reading a short legal thriller by Steve Cavanagh called The Cross

Michael Brookes (technohippy) The Anniversary by Jonathan Hill

I've just finished reading Jonathan Hill's latest novella The Anniversary and it's up there with his best - highly recommended. You can read my review here:

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Finished Full Dark House: Full Dark House (Bryant & May Book 1) by Christopher Fowler . Nowhere near as good as book 2 of the series. I wouldn't have either bought or borrowed most of the rest from the library if I had read this one first.

Now on a re-read of a classic read as a child - Stig of the Dump Stig of the Dump by Clive King

Lisa Marie Gabriel (lisamariegabriel) | 1066 comments I won 12:07 The Sleeping in a Giveaway so I am currently enjoying a creepy read. I think I might leave the light on tonight...

message 9506: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Just started The Kashmir Shawl and Swords for a Dead Lady to add to my collection of 10% reads. Also reading Restoration and A House Divided. Enjoying all of them so far. Just finished The Third Rule - Part One: Atrocities which I shall review shortly if I can keep my New Year brain in focus.

message 9507: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Andy is currently re-editing The Third Rule, Lexie. The whole thing will be shorter but it's still a mighty tome!

message 9508: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments That's good to know - I'll maybe wait before buying the next one then, so I can get the director's cut! Really enjoyed it.

message 9509: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Then you can start part way through!

message 9510: by Michael (new)

Michael Brookes (technohippy) I must get round to reading the third part - I enjoyed the first two books.

Michael

I've not read that in years!

How did you find it? I'm not sure I read it as a child, but remember watching it.

I'm delighted you enjoyed the 'old' part one, Lexie. The other two parts won't be on sale for much longer. I've chopped out nearly 70k words, and will be re-launching it soon.

I wrote a review

Don't think I saw the TV version; might have been the wrong era though I saw some of the classic TV adaptations of children's books, such as Tom's Midnight Garden.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished I Am the Great Horse by Katherine Roberts. It's the story of Alexander the Great's exploits and conquests as told by his horse. Meant for young adults, it's very well written and quite funny. They say no man in a hero to his butler - they might have added that a horse is still loyal, even though it knows all your faults!

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments I should have started the King, Patti, but when I finished A Much Arranged Marriage I've just gone on a Websterfest instead and re read Benor from the start...

Jim | 21810 comments Will wrote: "I should have started the King, Patti, but when I finished A Much Arranged Marriage I've just gone on a Websterfest instead and re read Benor from the start..."

Always a wise move! Apparently the UN are hoping to designate October as Websterfest on the grounds that getting everybody reading the books will induce a general sense of world peace, love and cynicism

message 9522: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments And it could be combined with Oktoberfest, and the ingestion of copious quantities of beer.

message 9523: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21810 comments works for everybody, people will forget how many copies they've bought and will repeated buy multiple copies!

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Would Websterfest start an epidemic of roof-running? Or maybe of general Benoring?

message 9525: by Will (new)

Will Macmillan Jones (willmacmillanjones) | 11324 comments Benor is an example to aspire to, I think.

message 9526: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21810 comments I'd like to think so.
I've always been somewhat heartened by how many perfectly sensible ladies love him to bits :-)

message 9527: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments There's one here!
At least, I think I'm sensible...

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments I know I'm not!

Nice!
Can I recommend we don't combine roofrunning and beer drinking? While I think I think I would be a better roofrunner after several pints, before several pints I'm pretty sure I'd be appalling drunk or sober.

And I'm on Swords for a Dead Lady, working my way through in the order of a roofrunner after many pints.

message 9533: by Jim (new)

Jim | 21810 comments In one of the books Benor does restrict the drinking when he's taking somebody with him, certainly I've never regarded it as a hobby to be taken up after the amount of beer than makes it look easy :-)

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12596 comments Just finished Crisis by Ken McClure, enjoyed the concept, although the typos did annoy me. Now starting The Abduction of Mary Rose.

Reminds me of a top quote from one of my favourite authors and gurus, Byron Katie:
"Don't be careful. You could hurt yourself."

Very highly recommended.

My favourite book of last year, Adrian. And I'm reminded of it daily, in traffic. ...

message 9547: by Pam (new)

Pam Baddeley | 3334 comments Used to love Stephen King; read them all from the early years but they then became more and more bloated and also repetitious of ideas from one to another. So haven't read any for quite a few years.

I gave Wise Man 5*, which is unusual for me.

You've reminded me I must get around to Global Domination soon too.
