We'll need to dig you out with a land spoon. (I saw something on Facebook where someone called a shovel a land spoon and that's what I'm gonna call them from now on)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments That sounds like something Abe Simpson might say. 'I used to call coleslaw liberty cabbage. But only I knew that...'

GL, we need a towel in here. Kath is dribbling again.

message 9208: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Good job it's not Mr Cox under that towel, else Kath'd be dribbling even more.

That's C.O.X., as in Brian.

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Betcha Patti is dribbling now!

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Someone left a mop and bucket in my author thread. I'll go and get it.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments What on earth is going on in here??

message 9212: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments I'm confused. How come his towel doesn't drape straight down?

I can understand the bit from his shoulder to his hands. That's at an angle because he's holding on to it. But the rest of the towel from his hands downwards ought to fall towards the floor and not continue on at an angle of 10% from the vertical.

That's either one very stiff towel or there is something underneath the towel stopping it from dangling straight down.

Ohhh. I see. Surely he doesn't have velcro on his willy?

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments maybe its sellotaped to his leg?

The towel, not his willy...

Hehehehehe

Gingerlily - The Full Wild | 34228 comments Amazing! One towel has managed to totally derail this thread...

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments I come back after the weekend and find we're discussing towel rails - thought I'd clicked on IKEA by mistake. Oh! Now I've scrolled back ...

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished (a day or two ago) Auto 2 by David Wailing. It's the long-awaited continuation of the Auto saga. Excellent stuff!

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Pam wrote: "Just finished Hounds of the Morrigan and now on The Long Secret."

I loved The Hounds of the Mórrígan, read it years ago when my kids were school age. One of my all time favourites. That strapline's a blxxdy cheek though - 'if you like Harry Potter...'. It's way ahead of HP, a totally different league. Beautifully written.

Just finished The Corpse Reader - it kept up the pace right to the end, and was thoroughly enthralling. A great mystery and briliantly evoked sense of place - mediaeval China.
Off to start one of the last 2013 downloads on my list. Only a handful to go now.

message 9222: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments A towel rail! Or a towel derail, which is presumably a towel rail's arch nemesis.

Heated perhaps?

message 9223: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments Definitely!

message 9224: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Now I come to think of it, what is the plural of nemesis? Nemesisses? Nemeses? I think the second one, but it sounds a bit odd.

For that matter, I was tickled to learn that the singular of ravioli is raviolo. Which probably means that the singular of Ferrari ought to be Ferraro.

message 9225: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments And just the one panino, too. Yes, Nemeses, says the linguistic pedant in the corner. And octopodes.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments I found out the reason why the pronunciation of Moet and Chandon had changed. The 't' on Moet has been hardened because Mr Moet was Dutch, not French.

Lesson learned.

message 9227: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Stick to your plonk, Geoff.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments In which case it should be pronounced Moot... :)

message 9229: by Lexie (new)

Lexie Conyngham | 1297 comments That's definitely a moot point.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments A point of moot please. In a big glass.

Yes my copy has that too and I found it annoying. I bought a copy as a present for a friend's daughter years ago and she enjoyed it so I bought one for myself and have only just got round to reading it - it was published well before Harry Potter!

Read On! | 106 comments Just finished /
This had the potential to be so much more than an average 3 star novel. A shame the author wasn't a bit more heavy handed with the drama side of things.

Read On! | 106 comments Kath wrote: "Heard varying reviews of this, Read On. Not sure it's my thing."

According to the reviews I read after finishing the novel, she has a big following and even her hardcore fans said this is most definitely not her best work. I've never read any of her previous books and so just took it at face value. It's easy enough to read but certainly doesn't leave any lasting impression on you. In a word - forgettable.

message 9237: by David (new)

David Hadley I've read a couple or so of Anne Tyler's books and liked them a lot.

These two in particular:
The Accidental Tourist
Dinner at the Homesick Restaurant

I don't know how they compare to her latest one, though.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments I enjoyed The Accidental Tourist too, and The Amateur Marriage.

Hauling myself through Neuromancer by William Gibson (at 65%). Barely understand a word of it. Allegedly, it's worth it in the end. ...
