Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Kath - you have a treat in store. IMHO, it's one of the best books ever written.

I've just given up halfway through ...

The 7 Secrets of the Prolific: The Definitive Guide to Overcoming Procrastination, Perfectionism, and Writer's Block

The 7 Secrets of the Prolific The Definitive Guide to Overcoming Procrastination, Perfectionism, and Writer's Block by Hillary Rettig

Disappointing. It has some good nuggets but is very preachy and over-complicated. Ironically it feels rushed and incomplete, as if it really needed some of the perfectionism that the author rails against.

That is one of my favourite books

I struggled through it to the end, Will.

It didn't get any better. You were right to give up on it.

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Well done - you are more patient than me! It's a shame. It's an important topic and there's the beginnings of a good book in there. Unfortunately, that wasn't it.

Phew! (big sigh of relief).
This is hovering around the top of the New York Times Best Seller List. That, along with the novels focus around the 70s New York Punk scene is what drew me to it.
Convoluted, drawn out, EXCESSIVELY long and anti-climatic.
Disappointing.

True.

One day I may write a book about procrastination... perhaps.

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Just finished To Kill A Mockingbird and it's as good as everyone said. Must get on with a review - although what can I say that hasn't already been said, after all these years?

message 9160: by Will (new)

Will Once (willonce) | 3772 comments Kath - one word of warning. You will now be filled with enthusiasm to rush out and read the long-awaited sequel "Go Set a Watchman".

Unfortunately it isn't anywhere near as good as TKAM. It was an early draft that an editor felt wasn't quite good enough to be published. That editor was right. An historical curio, but not "more of the same".

message 9161: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I'm not at all tempted, Will. I once read that when Harper Lee was asked why she had only written one book, she said, 'Because I've already said everything.' - I'll go with that!

There is also the controversy about whether it was actually written by Truman Capote.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12597 comments Finished Sherlock Holmes, now reading a short story Re:union

That one has long since been discredited. There's no evidence to back it up and lots of evidence (including text analysis) to show that Harper Lee wrote Mockingbird and not Capote:

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Just finished Gerald Seymour's The Outsiders - a good pacey tale of spies and criminals, tho rather depressing! Puts me off the Costa del Sol, not that I was ever going there anyway. Hadn't realised he'd also written the excellent Harry's Game
Think I might try something a little gentler paced next.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finished Water for Elephants a few days ago. It was alright. Three, maybe four stars. Certainly not a book I'd rave about.

I've started The Land of Painted Caves. Yeah, I know I said I wasn't gonna bother reading it after all the reviews reflecting disappointment in it but Dave got me a copy. I expect I'll flip past the boring bits.

David Hadley Just finished Edge of Eternity Edge of Eternity (The Century Trilogy, #3) by Ken Follett - the story of the 'ordinary' folks was decent enough, but the historical background was a bit iffy.

Just started Top Banana by Kath Middleton Top Banana by a young author whose name should be familiar to us all, which is off to a great start.

Michael Brookes (technohippy) Goat Dance by Douglas Clegg

I've just finished reading Douglas Clegg's Goat Dance and while it has some incredibly dark horror moments, it's also a bit too long for its own good:

David Hadley Kath wrote: "Oh, she went right off the boil, for me. I loved the first few - even though I had to skip the sex scenes - so out of place! I'm not a prude, they were just deeply tedious!"

I think as the series progressed there was a hell of a lot of repetition, including the sex bits and the ptarmigan cooking. Not only that there was a hell of a lot of repetition.

Not only that there was a hell of a lot of repetition.

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Just reading one of the last of my 2013 downloads, The Corpse Reader, which at the time was only a quid. So far it's very compelling/entertaining - set in mediaeval China, the descriptions are excellent, not overdone but with enough to give you a real 'flavour' - and smell... - of the times.
