I've got to try a Wodehouse one of these days. I've never read any.

You'll either love him or his books will leave you cold. If you want something light but occasionally wickedly observant he might just hit the spot :-)

if it amuses then you can tentatively take a few steps closer to his oeuvre.
If not, then Jeeves would probably advise to step smartly in the opposite direction.

If you want to try it for free, there is a fair wodge of his stuff over on Gutenberg:

Kath wrote: "I've recently read and loved Strange Shores and Other Stories by Sam Kates - three short stories with a common theme but different genres. A great read. I always love Sam's writing....":-) Thank you!
Half way through the Mightier Than the Sword and seemed a bit fed up so I decided to start Thief's Magic it's a long time since I have read any sword and sorcery and I am thoroughly enjoying it.
I've just read the City of Masks Picked up four paperbacks for a pound in a charity shop and this was one of them. It's probably Young Adult (which sums me up perfectly) but it's a good story, well written and I enjoyed it :-) Not quite sword and sorcery, more alternative Venice in the 16th/17th century
I recently finished Will Once's new publication - fantasy but not too orcy and elfy! Wonderful stuff.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...

Orcy .. wasn't she the one that wrote the Scarlet Pimpernel?
Just read Little Black Lies by Sharon Bolton. Three-person narration and a stunning ending! Very good.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
I've just reviewed William Meikle's tale of cosmological horror The Dunfield Terror and it's a worthy read for Lovecraft fans and horror readers generally:
http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Just finished Someone Else's Skin
which was very good, although the naughty person was fairly obvious early on.Just started
Contact.
Just finished The City & the City by China Miéville. Dire.15% through The Fault in Our Stars by John Green. Loving it.

Thanks for that Michael. I was thinking of getting that at fantasycon, but for some reason didn't - have to search for a copy now.
I've just started We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver as recommended by underground filmmaker John Waters...
Read On! wrote: "I've just started We Need To Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver as recommended by underground filmmaker John Waters..."Harrowing book, that. Has stayed with me for years.
Actually, it's a very black night outside, and my study feels quite dark. So I'm off to read some Lovecraft

Best reserved for midnights dreary!
I've just finished Holes: An Indie Author Anthology by fourteen authors who chat on Facebook. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2...Each author has written on the subject of holes and the stories are very different.
Now I'm reading I Am Malala https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...
Just finished YA fantasy
. Too young for me and too many inconsistencies in the story so didn't really enjoy it.
Looking for something spooky for my next read but not sure what to go for.
I read a few Lovecraft stories last night, without having any disturbed dreams. Quite disappointing. Might try some M R James tonight instead.
Just started reading Saints of the Shadow Bible, by Ian Rankin.I always enjoy Rebus books, it's like putting on a pair of old comfy shoes.
I spent a lovely evening discussing education pedagogy with two Canadians, two Kiwis, an Ozzie, a Welshman, an OBE and an arts teacher.Yes, this is my life.
We all agreed that Bookers, Orange and Pulitzers are completely meaningless.
I personally think that the Not The Booker Prize run by the Guardian is much better.(The fact I was long listed 2014 has nothing to do with that opinion)
Will wrote: "M R James; Oh whistle, and I'll come to you, my lad.Possibly the best ghost story ever."
Definitely. He's a wonderful suspense writer - nothing ever over-explained.
Just posted my review for the new Edna O'Brien novel The Little Red Chairs which I loved. Poignant, brutal in places but impossible not to continue reading.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished rereading The World According to Garp
, not as great as I remembered, but still quite good.Just started rereading (perhaps the 4th or 5th time)
The Fall and Rise of Reginald Perrin Super. Great.
I just finished Bring me the head of Turlington Jones, which I know is my book, but I've been working hard to get it published. I have just started Soul Meaning by [Author: A.D Starrling]. I tried the sample on Amazon and liked it, so I am now starting the rest. It's just my kind of escapist fiction: reality with a hint of fantasy.

I like The Mezzotint, too, but they're all good. Hope you enjoy them, too!
Just been reading the mezzotint, and recommending it to my friend who's into victoriana.I've decided to do a gothic horror for Nanowrimo, so pre reading more James will get me in the mood

Thanks for the post."I know this stayed at the top of the bestseller lists for WEEKS and I don't want to be a party pooper, but I found this a REAL slog to get through. No word of a lie, I nodded off whilst I was reading it in parts.
I won't put you off as you may love it (just as so many people did) but if I had to sum it up in one word - LABORIOUS.
I'll post a link to my review for you but it's probably best to read it after you've read the book as contains many spoilers. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1...

This is why this forum is so brilliant. I'd not noticed that book and I read/loved Edna O'Brien's early books, so now off to get this one. Thank you.
Have just finished a v good gripping read, The Other Child, and now started another Lucy Atkins, The Missing One, which is jumping about and a bit confusing at the mo, but I hope will settle down shortly!
I've just finished reading Rick Haynes' debut novel Evil Never Dies and it's an action packed tale of heroes and dark evil:
http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Just finished reading Contact (Alien Invasion)
, which was meh. This is now looking like a series that would be better as a single book.Just started
