I finished reading The Eagle of the Ninth last night and really enjoyed it - Rosemary Sutcliffe manages to bring the roman era alive. I bought the next two in the series in the summer sale but will have a break before I start those. Instead I started reading Vic's book last night Vic's Big Walk, only read about the first couple of days but finding it interesting so far - and the proceeds of the book will be given to a pancreatic cancer charity.

Sounds like a good one. I'll have to add it to the overloaded TBR list

It is supposed to be a children's book but I wouldn't have realised if I hadn't heard it somewhere - it doesn't read like a children's book.

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I finished Killers which was just as awesome if not more so than the kult and now i have started A Hole in the World

Hasn't that been turned into the movie The Eagle?

message 807: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't know Geoff - I'll have to look it up!

message 809: by [deleted user] (new)

I see it's quite a new film! Wonder if it sticks to the book or not...

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Not sure, I have a copy but not seen it yet.

message 811: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Didn't they offer Eagle of the Nineth as a freebie not long ago to promote the film?

message 812: by [deleted user] (new)

I don't remember - I'd bought it in one of the sales so wouldn't have picked it up if it was on free later. It's a good book...

Mo (mobroon) | 729 comments Just finished Ian Rankins the Impossible Dead which was a good read and carrying on with the other books The Map that Changed the World which I interrupted to read this.

message 815: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Mo, do Ian Rankins' books need to be read in order? I have a couple of his books in paperback but have never read them.

Rosemary (grooving with the Picts) (nosemanny) | 8590 comments Hi Patti - I picked up an Inspector Rebus and read it before I knew there were a load of them, after that I read them as I found them. Once I'd accumulated them all, I read them again in the correct order. I think any would stand on their own, but I loved the character of Rebus I felt I wanted to see his progression through the series. Haven't read any of Mr Rankin's newer, post-Rebus books though.
PS John Hannah episodes of Rebus on TV weren't awfy good, but the ones with Ken Stott were fabby. Would watch that man in anything....

message 817: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thank you, Rosemary. I'll not get rid of the paperbacks then. Who knows, I might read them one day.

message 818: by Kath (new)

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments I read The Eagle of the Ninth many years ago. The Lantern Bearers is about the end of the Roman era in Britain. It's not a happy read but it must have been like that. Rosemary Sutcliffe is (was?) a sublime writer.

message 819: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I finished A Hole in the World which was awesome, read it all in one day! Hope Sophie releases more. and now I am reading The Three Musketeers I don't think I'll get through this in one day...

message 820: by Mo (new)

Mo (mobroon) | 729 comments I just finished The Map That Changed the World: William Smith and the Birth of Modern Geology which was an interesting read. I have now started Cruel Justice #1and discovered that I have read it out of sequence...It is still very good.

Mo (mobroon) | 729 comments Patti (Pennywise) wrote: "Mo, do Ian Rankins' books need to be read in order? I have a couple of his books in paperback but have never read them."

All Ian Rankin's books are pretty much stand alone. There may be occasional reference to things that have happened in the past but they do not interfere with the story.

Janet Jones | 20 comments just finished The Alchemist's Secret which I really enjoyed and have bought the next in the series, they are bargains too!
Just started The Kult after so many on here have read it and are on to the next book I felt I was missing out! I'm abut 20% in and am enjoying - but may a bit gory for some tastes!

message 823: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm trying to convince my cousin to buy the kult but she says she's too busy, got a job interview or something, Pfft...

Thanks, Anita :) I'm working on the next book, but it's slow going as I keep being distracted by these boards. Lol. Plus I have set myself a tough task to try to make each book better than the last!

Is that a hint Shaun, should we leave you in peace for a while for the sake of book number 3?

I'd only come up with another excuse then. Lol. I may have to curb my internet time when I really get stuck into the writing though.

message 832: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I've been doing that all day! Read a couple pages, realise another percentage point has gone, put it down, have to know what happens next, ANOTHER percentage gone...

Shaun. Write the next book.

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Just finished Killers. Will now read a short story or two before sleep.

message 837: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm watching Downton Abbey cause I couldn't get to sleep. Wonder if I have any short stories...

message 838: by M.A. (new)

M.A. Comley (melcom) Thanks Mo, glad you're enjoying Cruel Justice. The books were released out of sequence as I had quite a few fans demanding a prequel to Impeding Justice, because they wanted to see what Lorne's relationship with Pete was like.

Just read Into Thin Air now reading Toxicity

Kath Middleton | 23860 comments Last night I finished Snuff Fictionby Terry Pratchett. I'm pleased to say I felt it was well up to his usual standard with great laugh out loud moments. Annoyingly, my husband read it first. I kep wanting him to read bits to me but I refrained.
I started Callahan's Crosstime Saloon. It's not what I thought. I'm intrigued!

I've got Snuff but not read it yet. It's good to hear that his work is still of a high standard.

message 844: by Jud (new)

Jud (judibud) | 16799 comments I'm going to read Mort after 3 musketeers, still intending on reading the whole series. Maybe I'll be done by the time he brings out his next book

message 845: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments T'was with great sadness that I finished Killers... Wasn't ready to go to sleep yet so I started a romance book because I didn't want to get into anything serious (and probably needed to feel a bit of love), now, has anyone got any suggestions for the next book I'm going to read? Got to be a book I've already got :)

message 846: by [deleted user] (new)

Have you read Six Seconds? It was a freebie some time ago so you might have it on your kindle...

message 847: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Yes Karen, read it and loved it :)

message 848: by Jud (new)
