Big time. And if I see the word 'knife' again anytime soon, I'll scream.
Oh
AAAAAAAAAARRRRRRRGGGGGHHHHHHHH
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Marginally.I've started The Paying Guests
Really good so far."
That is near the top, if not at the top of, my must read next list.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Have you read any of her other stuff, David? I've really enjoyed all of it."Most of them, I think.
Fingersmith and The Night Watch were the ones I liked the best.
I'm saving Tipping the Velvet until I've forgotten the TV series.
Affinity is the only other one I haven't read yet.
Just finished Dead Man's Grip, not the most enjoyable Grace story. Now about to read The Dark by James Herbert
Somehow the phrase "paying guests" always reminds me of Wallace & Gromit. It's a line from The Wrong Trousers.
My favourite Wallace and Gromit is the one with the sheep.Grab a copy, Natasha. I think it's gonna be the best book I've read since the last best book I read.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Grab a copy, Natasha. I think it's gonna be the best book I've read since the last best book I read."I read The Paying Guests a few months ago, Patti. Solid five stars from me. I finished Fingersmith a couple of weeks ago. It was even better :-)
Ah, think I recall you talking about it, now you mention it. Think you were the one that made me aware it was out.Dave is now reading Keith Richard's autobiography. Sez it's very good.
No way it wasn't ghost written, I reckon.
Thanks Patti, I will add it to my shopping list, give me something to do whilst we travel over the hill.
I loved Fingersmith, Anita. I still have Paying Guests on my wishlist. Too busy beta reading at the moment! Love it, though.
Hope you are feeling better today Kath. Will add it to my shopping list along with your new one and a couple of others. Give me something nice to do whilst we travel to Manchester.
Just finishedStation Eleven which was very good indeed, a rather thoughtful post-apocalyptic story that is well worth reading. (Contains traces of Canada)
Just started The Paying Guests. Off to a good start.
Just finished Moonfleet by John Meade Falkner, which was a lovely old story of smuggling in Dorset.Just started How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran. I'm laughing myself sick.
Decided I didn't have the concentration for The Dark, so started Short Shockers part 2. I'm behind with paperbacks, so am going to start the next Alex Cross book, not sure what it's called
I've just reviewed Mark R. Faulkner's book Flux and it's a decent horror tale:

I finished The Girl on the Train which was good, read it within a day, but not the kind of book that will stay with you for a long time. I started Before I Go To Sleep which is a page turner as well.
I've finished the funny Missing Gretyl - Only Fools and Trollops - Si Page. You can find my review on Amazon, Goodreads and my 2 blogs. Now I am off to listen/read Snow Flower and the Secret Fan - Lisa Seefor a buddy read.
Just finished The Other Car by Paul Levinson. Great little short story -http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Just started Silent Scream. Shaping up well. Had lots of recommendations for this.
Finished Silent Scream by Angela Marsons. Lots of hype about this. A good story but nobody breaks the rules of policing like that and doesn't get a bollocking by the boss! Four stars for a good story.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Just finished The Paying Guests which I thought was pretty good, bit not one of her best.Just started - well, now about halfway through, Before I Go To Sleep, which is pretty good. Apparently the author is a local lad who went to the same A level college as my kids.
Coo.
Just finished Sudden Prey by John Sandford Sudden Prey, brilliant. Just started Secret Prey Secret Prey, also by Sandford, starting well and as with the rest of the first 9 of the series I've managed to track down I'm hoping it will be well........brilliant!!
I've posted my review for John Moralee's The Bone Yard and Other Stories and it's an excellent collection of dark tales:

Just finished The Murder Bag by Tony Parsons. It was difficult to put down and yet had some infuriating aspects to it. A mixed bag, perhaps, but a rather enjoyable one.
Just finished Before I Go To Sleep, which was quite good. Although the twist is fairly obvious from quite early on, how the author gets there is worth reading it for.Just started The brief and wonderous life of Oscar Wao, which is - apparently - the greatest novel of the 21st century so far. At least according to this list: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/culture/bo....
Hmmm. We shall see.
Nothing like setting it up for a fall!I'm reading Belfast Noir, a collection of short crime stories, and Helen Lynch's book called something like (it's downstairs and I can't be bothered) The Elephant and the Polish Question. Mostly beautifully written so far.

I'm still working my way through The Paying Guests. I've not had much time to read in the last week, but still. Thought I'd gobble it up like her other books. Certainly not up to the standards of her other books. I'll carry on to the end, I suppose.
L.A. wrote: "Just finished Sudden Prey by John Sandford Sudden Prey, brilliant. Haven't read any in years and no idea where I left off.

I suppose the trouble with this one is that you can see where it is going, more or less how it is going to end, and how she is going to get there.
Hmm. Thinking back on The Little Stranger, I'd have to agree I was slightly disappointed in that one as well. This one? I'd love to give the two main characters a damn good slap. I have no empathy nor rapport with either of them.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "This one? I'd love to give the two main characters a damn good slap. I have no empathy nor rapport with either of them."Now, a few days after finishing the book I'm hard pressed to remember anything much about those two.
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Yep, exactly. It's really easy to put down."I find the older I get the less patience I have with books, but I did get to the end of this one - so it can't have been too bad.
Just started Etta and Otto and Russell and James - Emma Hooper, hope I can get into it. Not sure from the some reviews whether it's my kind of book. But I will give it a shot x
Read the first paragraph ofThe Brief Wondrous Life of Oscar Wao and thought to myself: this reads like the author has been on a creative writing course.Look the author up on Wikipedia and discover he is a professor of Creative Writing - that explains that then.
Struggled through to 25% and decided to read Fatherland instead. I thought I'd read it before, but apparently I haven't.

Yes. I liked the concept, the silos, but there was always the temptation to explain too much and he succumbed.
