Just finished - just started
Long time no post. Been busy moving and writing new book. Hope you're all well. Promise to try to post more often.
Lexie wrote: "Just finished Night Waking by Sarah Mosse, A Famine of Horses by P. Chisholm, and The Heretics of De'Ath by Howard of Warwick. An interesting mixture - enjoyed all of them in their way. Now startin..."Aah, Lexie, Night Waking is def one of my all time fave books. Puffins, murder mystery, satire, what's not to like... Brilliant. And I've got it as an audio book, bought for my mum who didn't get on with it. Now it's MINE, my precious...
Oh, and it's also going into the Quilt...
Just read Beneath the Boards by David Haynes. Modern supernatural horror and all the more creepy because of its modern setting.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Kath wrote: "Whooo...*bites nails*"Just finished Ravenfold and started The Taxidermist's Daughter
I really enjoyed Ravenfold Kath, congratulations on writing a very good novel ! I would like to hear more about the characters and the village, have you any plans to write another ? I really hope you do.
Anyway for now " thank you " for a very enjoyable read. X x
That's good to hear, Anita. no, I felt it was a complete story and never intended to revisit it, but they say, 'never say never,' don't they?
They do say that Kath but you built some good characters and maybe one day you will take them into another story.

Finished Fingersmith two days ago, absolutely loved it!As soon as I recover from the book hangover, I am going to start The Night Circus
Read a very short book last night called The Butterfly Effect by Scott Semegran. Now decided to read my first classic of the year, Little Women
Just started re-read of the last of my Connelly's - Void Moon. So far, none of the previous characters, so no Bosch, Haller or the LA Times reporter. Going really well and all I can say is that Connelly is a master and simply a brilliant writer!

I hope you enjoy The Night Circus Martha, I loved it and it brings back lovely memories of chats about it with a lovely lady who is sadly no longer with us.
Just finished The Troop, which is a Canadian horror story about boy scouts, lots of blood and guts - if that is your thing.I liked it.
Just started Wanted, which is intriguing, especially if you've watched his video series on how to sell books & so on.

I am so sorry for your loss..
I started The Night Circus yesterday night and so far so good.
I've just finished reading Daniel P Cuffman's collection of horror short stories Four From Below. There's some real darkness here, something for any horror fan. Check out my review here:

Couldn't resist starting Revival last night. I'm loving it so far!

Just finished Stolen by Lisa Hinsley. She always tells a good story but I think this is one of her best. Thriller.http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Blimey. Just spotted a fairly glaring typo/name error on p288 of Mr Mercedes by Stephen King. Wonder how many sets of eyes read the book before publication?
I have nearly finished the book Martial Arts - The Truth Behind The Myths. The book was free on Amazon and it's about a bloke who got beat up in a street fight after a night out and he decided to do Martial Arts as a way to look after himself. The book is written as an information book like a Martial Arts for Dummies type of style and through it he talks about the good and bad points of different styles. Going through Bruce Lee films, Shaolin Temple styles and UFC MMA.
There are myth's debunks such as the 1 finger kill moves and which are the best weapons and if Ninja's are really always dressed in black such as the films claim they are.
Sounds like I have just ruined the entire book but it is worth a read. The author is Phil Pierce.
Just finished And the Mountains Echoed which is splendid. It's a family saga and beautifully observed, but then I'm biased. I've loved everything he's written.https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...
Now I'm reading The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd - this is our village book group choice for next month.
I finished Ella Maillart's Forbidden Journey, an account of her trip across the western end of China in the 1930s. It was translated from the French and I'm not sure at what point it became rather episodic - she was writing for a Paris newspaper so it could have been intended to be published in parts, but it reads as if the translator left out the bits he couldn't be bothered with! Nevertheless it's a very engaging read, touching and amusing, and it's fascinating to visit China at a time when Japan was dominant, Britain was determining what to do with the northern borders of India, and the U.S.S.R. was flexing its muscles.
Just finished Beneath the Boards and this is quite possibly David Haynes' best yet.http://www.100wordreviews.com/blog/be...

I agree with that and will be posting my review later today.
I've just finished reading David Haynes' latest release Beneath the Boards. It's quite simply a fantastic read, the blend of joy and horror is something quite sublime:

Just finished Night Watch which was excellent, probably one of the top Discworld books.Just started The Straw Men, which is looking good.
Just finished Mr Mercedes, my first Stephen King. Wow. Five-star gripping page-turner of a book. Thanks v. for the rec, Patti.Just started Fingersmith, my second Sarah Waters (after The Paying Guests, which I loved).
Andy Barrett's The Lift: An Eddie Collins short story. A short story that's definitely worth reading. I wish I had time to read the trilogy of his right now.
Just finished Overlord: D-Day and the Battle for Normandy, which was a reasonable account of the operation. Just startedSmarter Than You Think: How Technology is Changing Our Minds for the Better - pah, computers, they'll never catch on.

I was a tad disappointed in The Straw Men. Started well but then dropped off

I'm about a quarter/third of the way through it. It is still okay, but there have been a couple of places where my attention wandered already.
It is the first one of a trilogy though, so it will be interesting to see if it makes me want to carry on to book 2 or not.
I've just finished reading Jeff W. Horton's cyberspace thriller 'Cybersp@ce' - despite it's faults it was an entertaining read:

Just finished The Invention of Wings by Sue Monk Kidd, which people seem mainly to love, but some really didn't get on with it. I loved it. It was chosen for our village Book Group and mixes historical fact with fiction. https://www.goodreads.com/review/show...

It's from Lee Child's post-modernist period where he experiments with meta-fiction and the subjectivity of narrative forms by undermining the reader's expectations.
