L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just finished Bad Blood (Virgil Flowers, #4) by John Sandford . It was a re-read and i really enjoyed it for the 2nd time. i love the Virgil Flowers character, and the fact that Sandford writes humour without diluting the story line which is this case is pretty amazing considering how dark it actually is.

Just started another Sandford re-read, another in the Flowers series Heat Lightning (Virgil Flowers, #2) by John Sandford

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments Finished Hostile Justice, and started Confessions of a GP. Can heartily recommend the Justice series.

I've just finished reading 'Ship of Storms' by Ken Dogget. It has some good ideas, but doesn't fully follow them through. STill an okay read though:

Natasha Holme (natashaholme) | 832 comments The Golden Notebook by Doris Lessing is an insanely long and involved read. I can't wait to move onto The Martian by Andy Weir!

message 7321: by Jamie (new)

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Just finished The Shakespeare Secret. Mediocre! Over long!

This started off really well, although the American slant on the English setting made me smile more than once. But it was well paced, interesting subject and really drew me in. But the pace drops terribly and the booked becomes a tedious, improbable series of chases from one location to another with private planes to make it all easier and no real sense of reality.

Also, the scene in the past felt shoe horned in and added nothing for me to the extent that towards the end of the book I was skipping through these.

In the end I was keen for it to end and I was left feeling that the book was far too long to the extent that I didn't much care what the ending was.

He does first person as well as anyone I've ever read and his characters are brilliant. I will be tired in the morning because I'm reading more of this before bed.

I've only read the Bolitar series, but as this sounds good and appears to be a page turner too maybe I'll give it a go.

message 7331: by David (new)

David Hadley Just finished Your First 1000 Copies The Step-by-Step Guide to Marketing Your Book by Tim Grahl which was interesting - make a mailing list basically.

I've returned to The Oxford Shakespeare The Complete Works by William Shakespeare after a break - I'm about halfway through it on my 3rd read of it all.

Forty Stories by Anton Chekhov - just started. People say you should read Chekhov for his storytelling abillities, so I am.

message 7332: by Karen (new)

Karen Lowe | 1338 comments Have just finished The Solitude of Thomas Cave: A Novel, which was sheer delight. I think Georgina Harding's writing is exceptional - this is the third novel of hers I've read.
Now reading The Lady's Slipper, which was one my mum enjoyed as a talking book.

L.A. Kent | 3925 comments Just finished Rough Country (Virgil Flowers, #3) by John Sandford L, another Virgil Flowers book and ut was as usual really great.

Just started Storm Front (Virgil Flowers, #7) by John Sandford . Another Virgil Flowers, which is a re-read, and although I'm enjoying it, it's a lot fluffier so far than the usual.

Desley (Cat fosterer) (booktigger) | 12600 comments Finished Confessions of a GP by Benjamin Daniels and, finally, Grimms' Fairy Tales by Jacob Grimm . Now starting The Unremarkable Heart and Other Stories by Karin Slaughter , seems very short to me, so shouldn't take long.

Jamie Sinclair | 939 comments Just finished Six Years
Top notch. I'm a huge Coben fan primarily because of his Bolitar novels. The pace of this is relentless, it's quite violent in places towed o. But Coben injects his books with a wise cracking humour that I love. I suspect this could annoy people but it works for me.
Plot wise, it's a lost love scenario but far from typical and the first fifty pages throw so much at you that's it's impossible to guess what's going on. But as ever with Coben, you have to keep reading.

Sounds good. I like the Bolitar books too so I'll be giving Six Years a go soon!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments I finished A Town Called Alice a couple days ago. Was really good but I did find the casual racism and misogyny off-putting. I know, it's of it's time, but still.

I'm now rereading Sai King's Blaze. I thought about trying that Wool that I've heard so much about but I've no idea if I've got the proper, full version. I also seem to have it in bits.

Anyone read it?

http://www.amazon.co.uk/Wool-Trilogy-...

I *think* he's another indie who has been picked up by a publisher...

message 7342: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Wool was a slow starter for me, Patti, that kept grabbing me and letting go. Can't tell you the reason as it would be too spoilerish. But a good way in it got better and kept my attention. Well worth a read. This is the version I read: Wool (Wool, #1) by Hugh Howey

message 7343: by Patti (baconater) (new)

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Thanks David. That's seems to be the first part? I think it's in four parts?

Would you bother reading the whole thing? More to the point, would you pay money for it?

message 7344: by David (new)

David Staniforth (davidstaniforth) | 7935 comments Wool is a trilogy: wool; shift; dust. As I understand it the first part of the trilogy was written as a series of novellas then compiled as a novel when it was complete. I think that shows in the finished novel and was part of the reason it took a while to grab me. In the end though I gave it five*, as much for the writing style as for the story. I borrowed it from the library, but I wouldn't have been disappointed had I spent money on it. Having said that I haven't rushed into reading parts 2 & 3, although I will at some point.

Yes.

Yes.

First you want: Wool Omnibus (Silo, #1) by Hugh Howey
then: Shift (Silo, #2) by Hugh Howey
and then: Dust (Silo, #3) by Hugh Howey .

I've read the first two and they are very good things. I haven't got around to the third one yet... but I will.
