Not really into humouristic books because I was born without a sense of humour...

That certainly doesn't come over from here and Skype. Everyone has a sense of humour Lorraine, it may not be the same as other peoples, but who cares.

Many's the time I've been reduced to helpless laughter whilst others look on bemused. I've got to the point where I don't care.

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Actually Geoff, I quite like the fact that it makes people laugh when they look at my face when I don't get a joke lol !

Actually, maybe it's a good thing, maybe it isn't, but I tend to do "gross" humour ! I'll spare you the details...

I put Sophie's book in my wishlist for now, wondering if it is ok as bedtime story for Ollie or if it's too adult (not that he listens anyway)

Trying to read the Kult, but the little one has been very very talkative, he's always pulling me out of the book, so I definitely think it's going to be a bedtime read for me, at least I get 5 minutes of peace then !

What I though:- Good plot. From chapter 8 to chapter 39 too much padding IMHO. Chapter 40 to end better. Must be the first in a series.

Starting Memoirs of an agility dog

Memoirs of an Agility Dog #1

Need something light now.

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Having finished The Throwback at the end of last week, last night I started Endless Summer by Christopher David Petersen. This one is a time hopping ghost story.

I'm hoping it's as good as Tear in Time as I really eenjoyed that. This one has got off to a good start, it led me down the garden path and has already taken me down an unexpected turn and I'm only about 30 pages in. So far, so good.

Ian (pepecan) Read about a third, but abandoned the The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society - the bits about the German occupation are interesting, but the rest of it was far too frothy and seriously dull. Now well into Before I Go to Sleep which I'm really enjoying.

message 625: by Sharon4 (last edited Sep 19, 2011 10:45PM) (new)

Sharon4 | 20 comments I've just finished Dark Matter and really enjoyed it. It's a beautifully-crafted ghost story with tons of suspense and a gradual tightening of the noose. Michelle Paver's prose is lovely and she knows how to set a scene and make it part of the story. Her love of the Arctic region really comes through. I read the library copy but I liked it so much I'm going to download it onto my Kindle for a re-read soon.

I've started a freebie - Mama Does Time and so far, I'm enjoying it. The narrator is a plucky, superpowered girl guide type, who wrestles with alligators as well as the dynamics of her dysfunctional family. It's hard to know what gives her more aggravation. It's a nice light read and there's already some romance beckoning in the form of a very handsome detective.

message 626: by [deleted user] (new)

I also downloaded Mama Does Time so I look forward to reading that.

I've been on a phase of reading romances - some better than others. I skip read some of them, but the best that I've read, and that I read properly without skipping chapters were The Best Intentions and An Unsuitable Wife.

Now I need something to get my teeth into so I've started to read The Forsyte Saga.

Sharon4 | 20 comments Candice Hern isn't bad - I quite enjoyed A Proper Companion. She's heavily influenced by Georgette Heyer, but she doesn't leave quite so much to the imagination. I'm not sure I'm entirely comfortable with her approach to Georgian/Regency romance, but it doesn't offend me.

My teeth are thoroughly into Assassin's Quest: Book Three of the Farseer Trilogy. One of the best things about a Kindle is being able to read big fat fantasy novels whenever and wherever I like. This one is a feast and I'm really enjoying it.

I have that one & one of the other two that you mention. I can't settle to reading yet so I'm still passing time with the easy reads. My to read list gets longer. Probably can't read much this dinnertime - I'm on a mission to find some Complan - dad isn't eating properly & mum wants to try to build him up :)

message 631: by [deleted user] (new)

Sorry to hear bout your dad - hope you manage to find something to build up his strength.

I've read another couple of Candice Hern books but like you found them a bit racy for georgian times - Good Intentions was a bit different and I preferred it to the others that I've read.

It depends what you're having done. I think my longest sitting was around 3 1/2 hours. Today's (because he was running behind by 3 hours!) was 1 1/2 hours.

The chair is the least of the problems where pain and being uncomfortable is concerned. Lol

Louise-Lesley wrote: "I hear the word tattoo and I just NEED to know details! "

Louise, you should be able to check the progress out on my tattoo sleeves on Facebook. I'll update the photos with the latest sitting probably tomorrow: https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?s...

Maureen (Mews) (mews) | 711 comments Just finished The Kult, certainly kept me on the edge of my seat!

Started a few pages of Hollywood Hills last night. Don't know whether I was just too tired but it wasn't doing anything for me. I'll try it again tonight before I decide whether to give up. I got it for 99p in the summer sale so nothing big lost I suppose if I decide not to bother reading it.

message 645: by [deleted user] (new)

I've been picking books up and putting them down again lately. Read half of Six Seconds and put it aside for awhile, even though the story is gripping I was feeling a bit too fragile for a thriller at the time. Picked it up again yesterday and finished it this evening - very good thriller, very well written.

Not sure whether I will go back to The Forsyte Saga again now or whether I will dip into something else!

Patti (baconater) (goldengreene) | 56525 comments Oooooooh, you're gonna LOVE One Day! Well, I hope so, anyway. I did.

I finished Sophie's book last night and started The Throwback. I like it. It's quirky.

message 648: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments Patti, is Sophie's book for adults? Was thinking of reading it to the little one because he doesn't listen anyway but that's a way for me to read it at the same time as reading him a story he might be interested in, but I don't want to have to edit grown up bits all the time.

Anyway, doesn't mean that'll get him to sleep ! We're reading The Golden Acorn at the moment, and a few days ago he was getting sleepy and then came along the creature named "The Bogie"... that sent him in a laugh and it was really hard to settle him down afterwards because he kept going "A Bogie MWAHAHAHAHAHA !"

Geoff (G. Robbins) (merda constat variat altitudo) (snibborg) | 8204 comments Lorraine wrote: "Patti (P E) wrote: "Have finished (and reviewed) Shaun's The Kult and have started our Sophie's A Hole in the World."

I asked Sophie about this. Her answer was that there are a couple of bits in the book that are "adult". She also said that she re-read some of the books she read as a child and realised that she just filtered out the parts that were a bit adult. On re-reading the penny drops, so I wouldn't be too concerned.

How old is Ollie Lorraine?

message 650: by Lorraine (new)

Lorraine Versini (lorraineversini) | 8438 comments He'll be 5 in December

Not too worried after taking him to school this morning - each parent has to read their child a story before leaving, and Ollie got a book about rabbits. There's like a whole page about how the rabbits mate, how the doe lifts her hind and the male rabbit climbs on her then rolls off to the side and that... no need to say I was probably looking a bit livid, but he didn't ask any questions, I don't even think he was really listening (he's got a mental switch-off button)... No need to say I breathed a sigh of relief. I don't want to have to lie to him or anything, but at the moment his knowledge of having babies limits itself to a baby growing in mummy's tummy, then at the hospital they cut the tummy open, get the baby out, and then fix it with some sellotape ! I'd like things to keep that way for now lol !
