I could no longer cope with Lionel Asbo: State of England so have binned it & am now reading Sycamore Row
Adele wrote: "I could no longer cope with Lionel Asbo: State of England so have binned it & am now reading Sycamore Row"I really can't stand Martin Amis. A man brought up with such privilege spends his entire literary life sneering at those not so well off as him
Just started Raising Steam my favourite book series, so all other books I'm reading are on slight hiatus at the moment
Adele wrote: "Just started Raising Steam my favourite book series, so all other books I'm reading are on slight hiatus at the moment"I've just finished it. Not as funny as some but far far deeper at the same time.

I've seen some suggestions that it's not, in fact, written by Sir Terry!!
Just finished We Need to Talk About Kevin by Lionel Shriver. Wow. ...Just started The Price of Salt by Patricia Highsmith, lesbian classic first published in 1952. This will be my first ever book club book.

Re ..."Kevin" - as brilliant as the portrayal of the mother was in really getting into every one of her emotions, I felt Kevin himself was utterly opaque and I couldn't buy into his portrayal at all. The argument that such a personality would be unreadable anyway I don't really accept. What did you think of him?
Marc wrote: "What did you think of him?Utter little shit. I really enjoyed how he was characterised. It was Franklin who got to me. I wanted to pick him up and shake him hard.

deleted by request of people who haven't read book yet
Patti (baconater) wrote: "Spoiler!"aw come on Patti, the book, the film, the kiddy colouring book... all been out for a fair while
I haven't read it yet either. And I would maybe have read it at some stage, but now I don't need to.
I found it a deeply affecting book. Still need to watch the film all the way through.
I don't do colouring in. I can't be doing with all those rules about lines.
Jonathan wrote: "I loved the book and the film did a pretty good job.MARC! Go and delete your spoiler! ;)"
your wish is my command
Thanks, Marc! Doesn't affect me of course, having read it a while back, but the 'twist' packed a punch with me. Tilda Swinton was ace in the film, I thought. And I loved the style and colours of practically every shot.
Natasha (Diarist) wrote: "I cannot imagine how they pulled this off as a film. Sooooo want to see.."It's a very interesting movie as it's consciously very arty but it works. It doesn't try to replicate the book in a dry way, but opens out some of its themes around the mother
I've just finished Redemption Protocol, which was a fun sci-fi read:http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
I'm now onto Strange Magic so far is very dark :-)
Just finished the latest DC Scott Cullen police procedural by Ed James, Dyed In The Wool. Probably his best yet. Just started Aunts Aren't Gentlemen by P.G. Wodehouse (his last full book) - now there's a contrast :-)
Just finished City of Fallen Angelsand now going back to the Tomorrow series to read Darkness, Be My Friendthe 4th in the series.
I've read a whole load of books since I last posted They Do It with Mirrors, After the Funeral, A Pocket Full of Rye, Destination Unknown, Hickory Dickory Dock I couldn't find Dead Man's Folly on my kindle so I'm reading 4:50 from Paddington now :o)

Part one here: www.youtube.com/watch?v=KxHdvs01QEA. Very well done. Shame it skirted around THE scene, though. ...
Finished The Help
last night. Excellent & highly recomended.Started The Waste Lands
.I haven't read We Need To Talk About Kevin, yet. Nor seen the film. It is very rare for me to get around to anything until it has been around for ages.
There is still some Plato I haven't read yet too.
Just finished Ethan Justice: Relentless by Simon Jenner - second in the series, if you like a fast action thriller, this series will grab you!http://ignitebooks.blogspot.co.uk/201...
Philip wrote: "Jim wrote: "Well at least I've finished Homer"Somebody did, he's been dead a while!"
I've got an excellent alibi, I wasn't born at the time ;-)
Just finished A Dance with Dragons, gave it 1 star and a scathing review. About to start The Stand by Stephen King, another 1000 page behemoth of a book but already looking promising from the first few chapters and infinitely more exciting than GRRM's terrible, pathetic boring fantasy book.
Finished The Observations by Jane Harris and will try to get a review done - it was excellent. Started The Damned Die Hard by Hugh McLeavy, rather accidentally - it's a history of the French Foreign Legion. Also started When in Rome by Ngaio Marsh, a reread from years ago.
Finished reading Zen in the Art of Writing which was good and went on to Save the Cat! Goes to the Movies: The Screenwriter's Guide to Every Story Ever Told, which is the 2nd book in a series about structure in screenwriting, not that I intend writing a film, just that story structuring fascinates me.
Michael wrote: "Just finished A Dance with Dragons, gave it 1 star and a scathing review. About to start The Stand by Stephen King, another 1000 page behemoth of a book but already looking promising from the firs..."I'm so envious of you getting to read The Stand for the first time.
Just finished
Hot Art: Chasing Thieves and Detectives Through the Secret World of Stolen Art
by Joshua Knelman. Snappy writing and a cast of interviewees from both sides of the law make art theft come alive. 4.5 stars.Read the full review here.
Now reading
and
.
I'm really struggling with my Letter V book, so decided to use my lend option on my Prime Trial to rent https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... instead.
I've just finished Strange Magic, which was fun and nice and dark, but could have been so much better:http://thecultofme.blogspot.co.uk/201...
I'm now onto The Omega Paradox
Just finished Sycamore Row very disappointed & no where near as good as A Time to Kill. Now torn between starting the new Terry Pratchett or new Ian Rankin. Still reading Wolf Hall and enjoying it immensely
Just started Swallowfields by Bev Carter. Actually I'm at 45% - it's excellent as usual with a nice build up of tension.
Just finished Candide by Voltaire, just started Original Sin by PD James. Candide was hilarious by the way, not at all what I expected.
Desley (Cat fosterer) wrote: "I'm really struggling with my Letter V book, so decided to use my lend option on my Prime Trial to rent https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/1... instead."I've been wondering about trying Prime for a month - if the really expensive books on my wishlist can be borrowed. How do I find out which books are lend-able (?)
