Deena | 175 comments I'm about 30 percent done with A Breath of Snow and Ashes on my kindle and I am a little confused about what happened with Ian and his family. Why did he leave his family? It is explained somewhat so far but I am wondering if it is explained further in the book? So far I am loving the book I think its going to be one of my favorite in the series.

Kimberly (kimberly_b) | 429 comments Hi Dee, Do you mean why did he leave his Native American family, including Emily?

message 3: by Deena (new)

Deena | 175 comments Yes Kimberly that's what I meant, why did he leave Emily and his child.

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Yes, keep reading! I absolutely adore Ian! He can rip your heart out, too, like his father and uncle!

Carren Kay | 953 comments I'm really looking forward to reading more about Ian,Jr in the next book.

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments I would love a whole spin off series with Ian Jr. and a grown up Jemmy! I have a feeling Jem would be quite like his lovely granda. ;)

Teresita A | 531 comments I am currently listening to ABOSAA on audio on my kindle. I do love that book. But i noticed on the audio the part where Claire was kidnapped seemed to have been cut short or some parts were skipped/missing. like when Mrs Buggs kills one of the guys that kidnapped her. Among other parts of the book.

Carren Kay | 953 comments Perhaps you got the "abridged" version?

Deena | 175 comments Ohhh okay thanks everyone, yea I was hoping it would be further explained since I didn't understand that story he told Marsali at all. I love Ian Jr.'s character too I would read a spin-off with him in it.

Leea | 1239 comments Young Ian is one of my favorite characters.. Keep reading because it's very sweet.

message 13: by Kathleen (new)

Kathleen (weishaark) | 33 comments I agree that Ian is one of the most loveable of the loveable characters in the 'O' series. One of the aspects that I love the most is how he serves as a foil to Jamie's seeming 'perfection'. Just when Jamie gets almost too good to continue the suspension disbelief, Ian comes up with one of his sly, humorous comments - shedding a light on that would-be perfection - compelling Jamie (along with the reader) to take another look...in the light of Ian's realistic and unpretentious perspective, maybe there ARE just a FEW little dents in that shimmering red-gold armor...oh, he made me laugh out loud more times than I can count...LOVED the scene on the raft when they were heading for Cross Creek when Jamie was TRYING to teach Ian some Latin :-D

Hi Kathleen, yes that part where Jamie was 'trying' to teach Ian Jr Latin was cute and funny. But i think one of my favorites where young Ian was concerned was it was he who helped get Claire and Jamie talking again after they went looking for Roger while Bree was pregnant and staying at Jacosta's house. And also in Voyager after Claire left Jamie when she found out Jamie was married to Laoghaire and Laoghaire shot him. It was Ian Jr who brought Claire back to Jamie. If it weren't for him who knows what would've happened. And I loved when Ian Jr first met Claire and thought she was a prostitute. There are too many Ian Jr moments I love, to count. Oh and in Echo In the Bone when William was holding Claire captive and it was young Ian to the rescue again to take his Auntie Claire back to Uncle Jamie.

Teresita A | 531 comments Carren wrote: "Perhaps you got the "abridged" version?" Hi Carren, you are right, i just noticed that i did get the abridged intead of the unabridged. Thanks for bringing that to my attention. the Outlander audio has take up most of my storage on my kindle and I don't want to delete them.

Deena | 175 comments I like the way you explained that Kathleen. I've always liked Ian and Fergus since we saw them grow up and since they have always been by Jamie's side, but from the past couple of books and especially this one I have been liking Fergus less and less. Fergus has changed so much especially after living on the ridge with Marsali. By the way how old do you guys think Fergus and Ian Jr. are in A Breath of Snow and Ashes?

message 17: by Dee (new)

Dee (austhokie) | 1124 comments I think fergus is mid to late 40's and Ian in his mid-20's...because Fergus was in his late 30's when he and Marsali got married, and Ian was a teen when he went to live with the indian's and that is 10 years or so later (IIRC)

message 18: by Leea, Escape Artist (new)

Leea | 1239 comments Was Fergus that old when he and Marsali got married? My mother in law was just asking me about that last night and I thought he was younger. It has been awhile since I read these books.

Young Ian is one of my favorite loved characters, besides Jamie and Claire. He's got an amazing heart and I hope the love he finds with (you know who :) works out and he has a bunch of 'lil Ian's running around :)

message 19: by Carren (new)

Carren Kay | 953 comments Fergus is about 15yrs older than Matsali

message 20: by Jen (at last!) (new)

Jen (at last!) (jenkeith) | 1052 comments Yes, Fergus is roughly 13 years Jamie's junior. He was 9 or 10 when we first met him in Dragonfly in Amber. Jamie was 23 then. :)

message 21: by Deena (new)

Deena | 175 comments Oh wow Fergus is so much older than I thought, I imagine him to be in his late twenties or early thirties like Marsali.

message 22: by Teresita (new)

Teresita A | 531 comments I know that Fergus changed gradually when he, Marsali and the baby moved to Frasers Ridge but I try to put myself in his shoes because since he was missing a hand and living in the country there was not much he could do and Marsali had to do alot of the work. It must not have been easy for him as a man not being able to provide for his family and then his youngest son is born a dwarf which to the ignorance of people back then thought it was some kind of curse. I think he just got to the point where he couldn't handle it anymore, was at the end of his rope and wanted to end his life. And I guess he thought his family would be better off without him. So I was happy when Jamie bought a print shop so Fergus could work there and that changed their lives tremendously. Fergus was able to help his family and was able to work again. And I think he was happy with the move. My heart went out to him because I don't think anyone was able to help him and he wanted to hide from the world. I always felt bad for him, from when Jamie first found him til the last book. He changed but I think he was always a good man who did the best he could with his handicap.

CONTAINS SPOILERS!!!!

I completely concur. Fergus did admirably well with all his life had been from a VERY young age. It was very different back then to be handicapped and have a family. It broke my heart when he (view spoiler)

The ever-wise Jamie knew the solution to make him still feel like a man who could provide for his family.
