I honestly have no idea why he did it. The man that hugged Draco was not Voldemort; he was a character created by the movie-makers. They did not portray Voldemort properly at all, so therefore, we cannot look at Voldemort the character to determine why he did it. All motivation came from the writers of the movie. None came from Voldemort himself.
That's a good point.... it just gives the viewers the idea that Voldemort is not totally nasty and that he has feelings, although the book makes it seem like he cares about nothing. Maybe they added the hug to make the Hogwarts kids in the movie feel a little more safe around Voldy.... as if that could ever happen! Nachos

Okay so, the hug wasn't supposed to be in the movie. It wasn't in the script. They took many takes of that scene and in ONE of them Ralph Fiennes just randomly hugs Felton! lol. Love it! And that's the one they decided to use in the movie.
I'm so glad they did. I love that scene. If I knew Voldy was giving out free hugs I would've tried to be there.

That's crazy, that is interesting how he said in Europe the theater goes quiet and it's a chilling moment, in America everyone laughs and thinks it's funny!
