I feel as if there are a lot of books vaguely resembling this description (fewer recently now that some historians think Richard was gay, although any Norman lord can be substituted for the king). Could it be Shield of Three Lions by Pamela Kaufman?

It's definitely Shield of Three Lions; the scene where they dress her as Cupid ends with her breaking wind in Richard's face! There's also a sequel to it called Banners of Gold.
