I can't remember the title of this one book ... it's a Native American one ... has a character named Mateo (I think) ... it's written part poetry, part novel ... does this at all ring a bell???? I can totally see the book's cover in my head (it's a close up of a face), but I can't think of the author or title.

Is it Ceremony, by Leslie Marmon Silko? Main character's name is Tayo and it is part poetry, part prose. Cover is as you described. Hope you find it, either way!
I agree, I'm pretty positive that it is Silko's "Ceremony", published in 1977. She first published a book of poetry in 1974. There are many discussions about this book online.
Might it be "Anpao" by Jamake Highwater?
