Rayna (Poindextrix) (poindextrix) I'm so behind! I'm still waiting for this book from the library :(. Maybe I should just cave and buy it...

Amanda For me, I think this book is a keeper. Usually, unless I plan to reread a book later or lend it on to people I'll give a book away or swap it for something else.

Alex I've fallen massively behind on this one :-( Life has just swamped me! At least when I do manage to catch up all the comments will be here for me to read, it'll make it just that little bit more pleasurable to get through.

Martha (marthas48) I'll be reading the comments next year. I got way behind, too, Zee. Hard for me to hold the bigger books do I tend to put off reading them.

Loretta (lorettalucia) What date will this book be finished? I just want to update it on the bookshelf. Thanks!

December 4th, instead of November 27th! :D

December 4th, 2011 not December 4, 2001 :P Thanks, Loretta! :D

AM10000 I feel awful, but I'm not sure I can finish this one... I only got to page 430.. :( This book just isn't grabbing me.. :\

Stephanie this book was grabbing and now it's stopped, i'm sooo close, but it's killing me...does 430 mean you're over half way? if so, i did that with vanity fair and then spent about 1 or 2 finishing the blasted thing and, i'm sure, annoying everyone around me with my whining about how i couldn't stand it! :D i totally understand, find something you enjoy to read, life is too short! :P

message 60: by AM10000 (new)

AM10000 430 is 49% according to the Goodreads tracker.. I'm reading East of Eden right now which I am really enjoying!

I put it down, too. I really, really wanted to like it as I'm very interested in the Arthur legend. But it just left me cold to the point where it wasn't worth my time and energy any more. There are just too many books I'd enjoy out there and too little time!

Amanda Shame you all feel that way, as I'm loving it! If you're not enjoying it though, it is pointless continuing, especially seen as it is such a long book. I've given up on a few myself this year. I just don't have the spare time to waste on something I am finding dull, so I sympathise.

Brandon I'm not sure if I can finish Mists of Avalon. Don't get me wrong, it was very interesting at the beginning. But I feel like I'm at a point in the book where I've lost complete interest in it. I know the novel isn't supposed to be appreciated because of its plot; it should definitely be appreciated because of its character development. But, where I'm at in the book, the character development has sort of slowed down. Hopefully if I give it one more chance, it'll re-spark my interest. :D

that's exactly how i feel brandon. i absolutely loved the beginning...and that may be part of the problem. i skipped ahead to parts i liked and then went back and filled in the holes to get through those parts. sadly, i do feel i'll like the movie more. :D

Aww, same here Amanda! I really did enjoy the story and I'm glad I finally read the book.

Exactly!! :) I seriously feel a need to just skim the rest of the book. I have so many other books I want to read at the moment, and I'd hate to focus too much energy on just this one book. And the movie looks really good! Especially since it has Anjelica Huston in it!

Stephanie the finish date for this book on the main page says 2001 not 2011 :D

Amanda I can see where everyone is coming from. I'm still loving it, but I have had difficulty understanding the way a particular character has behaved here and there. The plot to me is fascinating though, I love ask the political intrigue and social commentary, but I know that is not everyone's cup of tea!

if this makes sense...i love the plot, but hate the characters...er...i mean i dislike most of the characters! :)

Martha (marthas48) I've read a couple of books like that ... Loving Frank was the most recent.

i totally agree, loving frank was definitely like that for me and it took me forEVER to read it. hmmm, it started off nicely too!

Amanda I love difficult characters! They're definately more interesting that your straight forward goodguys. Disgrace comes to mind, the main character was really quite unpleasent, but at the same time you couldn't help but pity him. I'm sure I have other examples I am too tired to recall right now, although Becky Sharp from Vanity Fair might be another example some of us might be familiar with? - I was the sort of child that if asked who her favourate character in a Disney film was, would mostly pick the villain.

I loved the book ... flew through it. I knew about the ending, but was still mesmerized and thought the author did a great job with it. Those were 2 of the most selfish people that ever lived.

I love his designs, but think it would be most uncomfortable to sit in his chairs. I heard that he once told someone if they weren't comfortable in his furniture, then they weren't sitting in it properly! Such arrogance! LOL

see my problem was that i knew the ending, and therefore refused to like the character like i was supposed too. i read it fast in the beginning when i didn't know and then researched a little to see what happened and pow...read it slower and slower...

a friend of mine and i went to oak park, seriously beautiful stuff. my husband and i also watched the PBS biography about him. it was lovely and i've come to believe that old belief that all true artist are a little bit insane.

he probably did say that and he probably meant it! :D

Martha (marthas48) I live about 30 minutes away from the Dana Thomas house and have toured it many times in the more than 30 years I have lived here. He was definitely talented. I had heard the story because I became a fan of his work when a teenager. He definitely had a vision. I hope to tour other homes he designed.

I'm not sure they were meant to be likable. They were fascinating characters and it is one of my favorite books. It's a much more powerful book if you don't know how the story ends though. :-) I always recommend that people not research if they aren't familiar with it. It is an amazing story.

I'm probably not very accepting of women who walk away from their children. My ex-daughter-in-law walked away when my granddaughter was 15 months old and sick at the time. She had been cheating on our son for weeks. So no sympathy from me for women who do that! Needless to say, our son got full custody.

that's pretty funny amanda! i don't mind some difficult characters as long as there are characters to like as well. i've never liked villians, but love all anti-heroes! :D
