Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments But there are a million libraries by me so I usually request books but I wish I could own them all. I hate to give them back.

Sometime I read the book from the library but then later go and buy it cause I loved it so much.

message 52: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Yeah, well, that is kind of good to help stop the book addiction! Or, it might make it worse...

message 53: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) The librarians know me and my husband and the minute we walk in, they go to the hold shelf. I hardly ever buy fiction, but usually when I do, I'm an Amazon girl. I used to shop in bookstores alot when I was younger, but it is just too much of a temptation.

message 54: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Haha, that must be great when they know you! I love librarians, they're always so helpful.

message 55: by Laura (new)

Laura (apenandzen) I love them too. I think it's cause they're fellow bookies, so we're kindred spirits :)

message 56: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Sooo true. :) I love librarians, Chapters employees, and Goodreaders. :)

Spudsie | 44 comments Ummmmmm.....hi....my name's Spudsie...

(HI SPUDSIE!)

.....and....um.....I'm addicted to books. And buying books. And talking about books. And writing about books. Sniffle.

It was all under control until I found TNBBC. Sniffle.

It started so innocently. I wanted to talk with other readers. How was I to know they were really a group of "enablers??"

I mean, sure....it warned me on the "about us" section that my reading list would grow. But....that's hardly enough. Sniffle.

Now my shoe collection won't even talk to me anymore. They feel so unloved and abandoned. Sniffle.

It's been 15 days since I last purchased a bo....
!(#^#(@)W.....stupid Amazon.com.....I forgot about that not yet published book......that I had on auto-order...

It's been 34 seconds since I last purchased a book. Sniffle.

message 61: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments My book shopping addiction has not increased (yet) due to joining GR and TNBBC (or whatever the abbreviation is *embarassed smile*); however, that doesn't mean I don't have a book buying problem.

My shopping tends to go in spurts - clothes, bellydance costumes, books, DVDs - not necessarily in that order. I've been on a book binge for quite some time now.

Within the last few weeks:

- I hit up the 80% off bookstore in the mall (around through the holidays with older books and getting new items daily) at least twice. The first time I left with three large bags and the second another two.

- I've taken to stopping and WalGreens once a week in the morning to pick up "something" for work and just happen to walk by the book aisle. I bought another three books this way last week.

- Of course, there's the ever-frequent trip to Barnes & Noble. Averaging one to two times per week with around three books per visit.

- Let us not forget the fantastic bargain books at Good Will where I can leave with another two or three bags. What's great about GW is I can find books on my list for way, way, way cheaper. The downside, I find books not on my list and end up buying them because they sound great and are inexpensive.

Oh, and forget the whole list thing. I have a very organized MS Excel Spreadsheet (two now) with the books I own and have read/need to read. Then I have a second one showing the authors/series/books I want to get to at some point. The "own" list is sitting at 444 and the "wish list" is sitting at 250. And it seems to grow daily!

IT'S INSANE! I need a book buying intervention. Seriously, I have close to 300 books that I own and haven't even read! Then, I go to the store and see more books I want to read, or get recommendations from here, or see books in a the Romantic Times Book Reviews magazine. There's just so much I want to read and not enough time to do it all.

I figure, though, I'm going to have to start setting some goals. Like perhaps only being able to buy one book per week and needing to read at least 100 books (that I own already) in 2009 or maybe put a time-line that I have to read a book within six weeks of purchasing it. Seriously, I need a support group.

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Oh, did I mention I'm not rich and seriously need to stop spending money?

message 63: by Angela (new)

Angela | 1934 comments I usually only check out books at the library because I could not afford my addiction. I use to buy books all the time about five years ago and then I just did not know what to do with them. It is really, really rare that I reread a book, even if I did love it... there is just way too many books that I want to read that I could not see rereading anything. I do give the books I happen to buy to friends and I just tell them to pass them along after they are finished... share the love is my motto :)

Spudsie, loved that post! So cute and so true!
Iki.... I hear ya! I have to really reign myself in too, salvation armys are great, all the books are less than a buck, the library sales are addicting, most for under a buck as well....

I used to allow myself to buy three books. then i had to read those three books before I could go out and buy more. Then I got addicted to goodreads, and my to read pile is up to 50 books.... thats the highest its ever been for me.

I cant stop. Its like books hold some kinda power over me. Im usless, I cant resist. Hell, I dont WANT to resist! I enjoy giving over the call of the books completely!!

message 65: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 21 comments Hello fellow book-addicts,
I have a good system so that I don't spend all my money on books. I always check if I can get books on reserve at the library first and then do that if I can. But if my library doesn't have the books I want and I really really want them, I buy a few at a time off of amazon. Cuz even though I live 5 minutes away from Chapters now (very dangerous lol), I usually find it is a LOT cheaper to pick, the cheapest used book on amazon of the book I want and have it shipped.

Then....once I read books, I keep the ones I absolutely love like crazy and then list the rest on amazon and sell them. It works pretty well....I'm constantly mailing out a book or two to someone but at least I get money back for books I don't want anymore and I don't have an apartment that is positively swimming in books.

Has anyone joined the BookMooch website? That can be dangerous too....I have so many points right now (which means I can mooch lots of books from people for free) and sometimes I just mooch like 10 in a week and then of course I'm drowning in books when they arrive lol.

I generally don't like getting a ton of books at once though cuz then I get kinda stressed and uneasy (as weird as that sounds) trying to decide which book to read first:)

I'm so glad you guys share my addiction....my boyfriend just shakes his head in disbelief at me as more and more books gather in our apartment lol.

message 66: by silvia (new)

silvia | 282 comments I've put some control over myself... I only buy books once or twice... maybe a third time if its a very good deal or I'm especially depressed...

anyway I cant wait to the end of the month. so i can order mor 2 sandman books and put a pre order on the new jk rolliwing book. I dont usually do preorders, but there's a special deal, i can participate on a contest and have a chance to win a box set whit the harry potters books. just thinking about it makes me drowl

I just recently started using bookmooch its a hazard

message 68: by [deleted user] (new)

Donna, I entered the group already addicted. No chance for me to quit buying books! No cure for this!

message 69: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Sorry I didn't answer sooner but I had to answer to the impulses of purchasing books.

Spudsie, that is awesome!! THX.

Sarah, THX for Bookmooch!! I too get stressed when I buy too many books but I just can't help it.

Mirela, I am so with you.

And Lori , you are right. Who Cares?!?!? They are Books not drugs but just as addicting!!!

message 70: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I did not forget about u Ikiwiki but I can't find anything to say about ur addiction but at least u are organized LOL!!!

message 71: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) since losing my job...i have started using the library...my boyfriend now buys my books, if i let him....we were at Barnes and Noble and he asks if i want anything, but I feel bad so I say no. Meanwhile I have bought him lots of books (he's still got 15 of those unread).

he's an addict too...

we support each other..

message 72: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Awwww, well that's awesome Kristie! At least you have someone that understands!

Iki-Whoaaa, but I need to start going to used bookstores more! I buy at random in Chapters, so I might as well do the same place in the multiple stores around my neighourhood! Whereas Chapters is 15 minutes away.

Angela- I've been thinking about sharing my Stargirl copies, and buying The Gemma Doyle Trilogy AGAIN and giving it to people, because I am constantly reccommending them. (As you know, LOL).

Lori- You are so right, but I've been able to control myself. But that's parically because I haven't come across a Chapters in a while. Haha.

Sarah: That. Is. Absolute. Genius. But I could never give away any of my books! I'm glad your system works for you!

Bnoir: I've been considering pre-ordering Papertowns, which is the new John Green book coming out.

Mirela: Soooo true. Good luck!

And Bookmooch: It sounds perfect, but addicting. And I spend wayyyy to much time online as it is!

message 73: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments As you Emma, I hate to give up books. The only way I will is if they are too bad and I just can't stand to look at them!

And Kristie, never feel bad when your boyfriend offers to buy you something. That's what they do and he obviously wants to so let him it probably makes hime feel good too! You both win.

message 74: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I know....then I give them away at garage sales.

Haha Donna! I think we would all like a guy who would insist on buying us books! I know I would!

message 75: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments I don't care who it is. If someone asks me if I want anything at a bookstore the first thing I am going to ask is "How many?"

message 76: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments You know Donna, that's a incredibly good point. Doesn't matter who, it just matters that they offer! Haha, we are soo addicted.

message 77: by Kathy (new)

Kathy (bookgoddess1969) I definitely need to stop buying books! Has anyone seen my to-read shelf? I would say easily that 700-750 of them I own. I do work at a bookstore, which helps, but at the same time.....its dangerous!

message 78: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Wow. At least you get a discount!

message 79: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments OMG!!! I would never have a paycheck if I worked in a bookstore. Kudos Kathy!!

message 80: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Hahaha, soo true.

message 81: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Oh, Lori, I never even though about the Salvation Army. Now I'll have another place to shop! :-)

I think I may have a plan. I have to read 10 books I already own before I can buy any new books.

I've created a shelf on GR called 00-my-next-reads so I can track which ones are next.

We'll see if this works.

It's like I need a support group!

message 82: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Awwww, thanks, Donna! ;)

message 83: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Haha, we ALL do Iki. I kind of go with whatever I'm feeling like, but lately, I've been picking books that I've already bought. 10 books, wow, that's a lot.

message 84: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments That's a good idea and No prob!

message 85: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments Okay, that's hit. How, oh how, are you people getting others to offer to buy you things at bookstores? I need to get on that train and quick!!! :-)

I should also note, as a book snob I need to own everything I read...even if I HATE it I won't get rid of it. Perfect example, I actually borrowed a book from the library. Read it, enjoyed it, returned it, went out and bought my own copy which I haven't ever opened and will probably never re-read. Hmpf!

message 86: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments And you didn't, vehemently love it or anything? Because I buy books I love and will probably never read again.

message 87: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments Ikiwiki, I must have said that a million times!!! I have a very bad habit of doing that!

message 88: by Lori, Super Mod (new)

Lori (tnbbc) | 10640 comments Mod
Iki... I am the same way... I will not give up a book, no matter how crappy it is. My hubby doesnt understand it. But something about amassing a library all of my own is appealing to me. Being surrounded by books... its peaceful and makes me feel all warm and tingly inside!

message 89: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Even when that book was torture? True though, I don't think I'll ever be able to give away the Twilight series. The covers are too pretty. :P

message 90: by Donna (new)

Donna (dfiggz) | 1626 comments My hubby hates it. I once rescued a full set of 1985 Encyclopedia Britanica just because.....

message 91: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments I think it stems from when I first saw Disney's Beauty and the Beast. I fell in love when she walked in the library. I want one of those in my home.

I'm literally begging my hubby to make me floor to ceiling shelves in one of our spare rooms. There's just something so romantic, whistful, and relaxing about it.
___________________
As for buying the book I read at the library first... It was a really great book. VERONIKA DECIDES TO DIE I can see myself re-reading it at some point; it's just I'll likely never get to that point. There are far too many other books I want to read before I start re-reading others.

I know, I'm totally crazy.

message 92: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Well, if you are, so am I! (Which is highly possible). I do the exact same thing.

Ahh Beauty and the Beast, yeah, I remember that! I loved Belle.

message 93: by Angelica (new)

Angelica (angelica221) OMG!!! I am glad I am not the only person who buys way too many books. And yes, this club has assisted with it. I prefer to either get my books used or on the Kindle. My TBR pile is so huge!! I just ordered the House of Leaves today too and downloaded Dracula. I'm hoping that in October, I'll stop but who knows. It's just comfortable to be surrounded by books.

message 94: by Krista (new)

Krista (findyourshimmy) | 382 comments imagine huge chorus - *She really is a funny girl...that, Belle*

one of my favorite parts from the movie; this line always sticks with me and I'm not sure why - *Off to the cupboard with ya now, Chip. It's passed your bed time. Go night, Love.*

message 95: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments OMG, How could I forget?

I saw the Beauty and the Beast play, and it was one of the best I've seen. It was a christmas play, and I loved it.

Petunia, I doubt that any of us will ever stop. Ever. Oh well! At least it's fun to talk about our addictions!

message 96: by [deleted user] (new)

I have too many books too. I keep buying & just can't read them fast enough & there are more that I want!

message 97: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments Soo true. I don't think anyone can really have any complaints as long as they get really good deals. I always get a really big high when I get a deal, ESPECIALLY on books.

message 98: by [deleted user] (new)

That is so true. I just really wish I had more time to read!

message 99: by Emma (new)

Emma Blue (litlover) | 2389 comments I think it would be nice if I didn't need any sleep. Then I could spend the day on GR and doing real life things and spend the night reading.

message 100: by Kristie (new)

Kristie (spedkristie) I have soo many books, they don't fit on my shelf....i have 3 stacks on the floor
