message 302: by Phil (last edited Oct 11, 2011 12:44PM) (new)

Phil | 11841 comments Right now I'm sleepy. Our smoke detectors went off just before midnight and we couldn't figure out which one triggered it. Those things are LOUD!

There are 12 spread throughout the house (all interconnected - when one goes off they ALL go off), so I was up for a while trying to figure out what was going on. Eventually I unplugged ALL of them to shut them up, then took out their battery so they wouldn't beep every 45 seconds.

I got to bed about 2:30, after researching what brand I'd like to replace them with. Looks like the Kidde PI2010 is the answer. It has both kinds of sensors and is rated most reliable (with fewest false alarms) by Consumer Reports and by reviewers across several web sites.

False alarms = Pain In The Ass

I'm wondering which one is Cynthia's house.

message 304: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments We have a couple of rooms with lots of windows--the study I'm in has seven, the back porch has a bunch, plus a transom window. Attic has eight windows--all old and double-hung, circa 1922.

Good thing they don't charge glass taxes on houses anymore.

message 306: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I never thought to count windows. We have thirty or thirty one, but it would be more if we weren't one side of a big old Victorian duplex.

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Right now I'm feeling guilty I told my boss I'm going to a dentist appointment, when I'm actually going to a job interview. I don't like to lie.

Dogs can be so judgmental. Cats are worse though.

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Right now I'm hoping this much-needed rain lets up so I can go back and sit with my Hospice lady. It was really pouring there for a bit.

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Barb wrote: "It's 4:40 and I'm sending as many positive vibes as I can muster up toward Amber at her interview ..."

Me, too... I hope she comes back with some very positive feedback from her experience. :)

message 314: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments Ok, I think the interview went fine, but it was a little pointless. I spoke to the person I would be working with, but the person who actually makes decisions and has all the important info wasn't there. The place seems like a great environment with tons of benefits, but I have no idea what they pay yet. I can't take a major cut, so I'm really hoping the pay is decent--and that I can get the interview scheduled to be held over the phone so I won't have to lie to get out of work again.

message 315: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11841 comments Right now I'm procrastinating putting together my soccer practice schedule for tonight. I'm also relaxing after a bike ride (50 hilly miles), and feeling less stress about my FIL's medical stuff -- I signed him up this morning with a United Healthcare PDP.

message 316: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

 ~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments I can't imagine riding 50 miles. I don't think I could handle 5.

message 317: by Jammies (new)

Jammies Right now I'm feeling sad because the job interview I thought went so well on Tuesday ended with a turn-down e-mail last night.

message 318: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments Sorry to hear that, Jammies.

message 319: by Heidi (new)

Heidi (heidihooo) | 10825 comments Oh, that's a serious bummer, Jammies. Something better's gotta be waiting for you... something perfect.

message 320: by ~Geektastic~ (new)

~Geektastic~ (atroskity) | 3205 comments So sorry Jammies, I know how much that sucks. But I agree with Heidi, I'm sure there is something even better waiting for you!

Jammies Thanks, everyone.

Especially Phil. That's real friendship! ;)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Jammies, sorry. I've no extra brains to spare, but I'll send my hugs.

message 326: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11841 comments Right now I'm taking a short break from watching football. I put in a quick 45 miles on the bike this morning and had to ride solo because my riding group all canceled. The plus side is that I got to ride at a stronger pace.

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments right now i'm getting ready to head to our local jail for my first night of library volunteer guy there. the library called me and said no one wanted to volunteer for pushing the book cart around there and asked me if i would since i do other volunteer things at the library. wonder why they asked me? LOLOL

this should be fun

message 333: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments what an experience. i was truly humbled and blessed last night. got the carts all ready and looked over the books to make sure i had an idea of what we had then got escorted into the pods where they systematically opened a few cell doors at a time and the guys rushed out to try to get first dibs on the good books. they each can get 2 books for 2 weeks. i was stunned at how well read many of them are and had a ball discussing books and authors with these guys. most all had fav authors that they were looking for and some had specific genres we tried to find. westerns were popular. legal thrillers are big. lots of the guys read women authors because there is "more sex in them" according to the guys. thanks, not sure i wanted to think about that. several requests for urban fiction of which we have none really. lots of very gracious guys who sincerely said thanks for coming. i knew some of the guys and two in particular were very embarrassed for me to see them there. one a young kid who i had coached in baseball and one guy i went to school with. both hung their heads when they saw me and i got to give them a hug (maybe against the rules, i dunno) and tell them to get squared away and we'll hang out on the outside. watching guys have to pick 2 books from a somewhat crappy selection that they will have to have for 2 weeks made me humbly appreciate our library and eBooks and everything else we have access to.

all in all a great experience, i will be going back twice a month now to do this. thanks for your support

Seconded.

message 336: by Cynthia (new)

Cynthia Paschen | 7333 comments Kevin, to my knowledge there is no rule against hugging by library volunteers. Some of my senior clients look forward to my visit every month and appreciate a hug or a smooch on the cheek. Many of the seniors don't get a lot of physical contact and seem to enjoy someone who is willing to look them in the eye and give them some loving.

message 337: by Kevin (new)

Kevin (ksprink) | 11469 comments well, i am a hugger but the guards gave me the stink eye so i guess it is more physical contact between outsiders and inmates. i hug the kids i mentor in the school system and no one says anything about that. funny deal in the jail though, i had a pocket knife in my pocket that we clearly evident by the clip in my front pocket and no one said a word about it or even asked if i had anything like that on me until i had been in the jail for an hour and a half when a female guard noticed it and just told me to slip in into my pocket discreetly. ooopsie

Jammies Kevin, that was a lovely thing to do! Is there any way to contribute books to your library? I'd happily donate my fun money for a month to get some urban fantasy/urban fiction for the prisoners!

Nice story, Kevin. I like hearing that not only do they crave books, but that they want to read women authors. Many men don't. I need to find out if jails/prisons around here accept books.

i got with the library and they take donations for this program through books or money. i don't want to be involved in getting any money so i have info on how to send it directly to the Kokomo Howard County Public Library. they have to be paperback (can you use a hard cover harry potter book as a weapon?) and i am trying to round up some westerns (a fav), urban fiction, reference (these were big requests) as well as any others to mix into the rotation. if you would like to help PM me and i will forward info.

thanks so much for the offer. i am excited about this program

You truly are a selfless man, Kevin. The world could use alot more of you. Do you ever sleep?

You have inspired me in the small way to begin donating my finished novels to the local jail rather than the library or being self serving and turning them into credit at our local used book store.

Yep and according to the inmates at that jail, he's got purdy lips.

message 348: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments DId you lose any of them in the ravine?

message 349: by Phil (new)

Phil | 11841 comments Right now I'm searching for a pork loin recipe. I bought one to make grandpa happy but I've only prepared it once before and he didn't care for that recipe.

Later, while he's porking out (hehe), I'll be getting home from soccer practice and having something veggie.

message 350: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 13814 comments I assumed you were talking about the Ontario Science Centre, which is situated on the edge of a ravine.
