message 706: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments ... a bit tired. I skated 40 km yesterday and 35 today. I'm taking tomorrow off and have another 40km planned for Friday. I'm also skating Saturday, but depending on how well my body handles my only week of sports a year, I might go for a shorter distance then.

Phil | 11841 comments Are you preparing for the Elfstedentocht?

message 708: by janine (new)

janine | 7709 comments That's 200km, a bit too long for me. I'd have to do some serious training to be able to do that. I'm fast enough, but I don't think I'd keep that up on that distance. Besides, I don't have a pass (you have to be a member and even that doesn't guarantee you'll get to start) and there isn't going to be one this year, which we're all a bit sad about right now.

Wow that's fantastic Janine! There were a few pictures of skaters on the Keizersgracht Canal in our morning paper yesterday.
I did one day of roller skating in my younger years and had to have a sickie the next day. Have a hot bath and stretch.

I'm excited to read more as the Tardis Family night progresses. I'm actively not thinking about tomorrow myself, as in about 18 hours I'll be standing in a room with 12 surly teenagers.

message 743: by Louise (last edited Feb 17, 2012 01:54AM) (new)

Louise I'm surfing hotels.com planning our trip to the U.S. this Summer. I'm also debating with myself, if I can really afford it, the flights alone for 4 people amount to roughly 5000 dollars... Aaand the house needs to be painted. But I need a vacation more? ;-)
And are overdrafts really that bad? :-)

Skip the hotels and stay with TCers.

Okay, maybe not safe or practical, but it could be fun.

Sounds great :-) But actually the hotels I've been checking out in Memphis and Virginia Beach seem pretty cheap - you don't pay extra for the kids when you stay 4 people in a room, you do here. I'll talk to my sister and see if she can find cheaper tickets.

Have any of you guys been to Virginia Beach? Any thoughts?

Virginia Beach is nice, but very, very touristy and pretty crowded during the summer. I'm sure people that live there would disagree, but as someone who just drops by for a day or two from time to time, that's my impression.

message 749: by Lobstergirl, el principe (new)

Lobstergirl | 24788 comments Mod
If I were coming from Europe to the U.S., Virginia Beach would not be a prime destination.

message 750: by Félix (new)

Félix (habitseven) For me, either. Virginia Beach is not one of my favorite locations on the planet.
