R3 TEAM THREAD: Team #5 ~ Gypsies, Vamps and Thieves

Bound by Moonlight by Nancy Gideon
Book Completed: August 25, 2011
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★
This was my first read by Nancy Gideon and it will not be my last. This is the fourth book in the Moonlight series and although I have not read any of the previous novels it did not detract from enjoyment of this one. Although, the other books must have some continuity between them because at times I felt I was reading something I should have known but didn’t, if you get my drift. So this book can be read alone, but there are probably some nuances that will be missed.
It was interesting to have a character such as Max Savoie, whose background is not just a little shady, but a lot. Although, as the story progresses we learn more about Max’s childhood and begin to understand that his character development was greatly influenced by those around him. Overall, he is a strong, caring, and sensitive lead character and I liked him a lot, even with his questionable background.
Charlotte (Cee Cee) Caissie is the daughter of one of the City’s most respected cops and she constantly struggles to live up to the family reputation. Her being the mate and dating Max Savoie throws some major hurtles in that area. Also, her partner Alain Babineau, is constantly on her case about Max. I’m not exactly sure about Alain. I get the feeling he is out to get Max but that thread is left hanging, so I will just need to wait and see. Cee Cee is an interesting character to me, there were times when I really liked her and then times I wanted to smack her upside the head and ask her “What the heck are you doing?” But overall, she is loyal, independent and passionate about those in her life. Both Cee Cee and Max had some growing up to do and learn to actually communicate with each other and not just make assumptions about how the other would deal with things. I liked that about them.
The story had good pacing and I was kept interested throughout the book. It took the whole book to solve the crime, and the revelation of the perpetrator was unexpected. Overall a good read that I would recommend. You should enjoy the paranormal genre and don’t expect your characters to be all bright and shiny. These characters are real and have serious flaws but are generally good, decent people – just the majority of us.

I'm halfway through The Werewolf Upstairs myself.

You and Amanda are still reading the shifter shelf. However, we're not actually behind, even if you feel like a slacker. ;)

I just finished Dark Taste of Rapture by Gena Showalter and it was amazing :)

But I will try to read it today. Last round I was able to use a lot audiobooks which made it easier to get them in quickly. But this time I haven't had any that I could use.

Steph, I would say the cliffhanger is not a really big one as far as book cliffhangers go. Probably more like threads for the next book. I would go ahead and read it.
I figured I was missing some background, but I really liked Max's character. I WILL be adding the other books to be TBR pile since i enjoyed this one. Thanks for fillilng in the blanks for me!!!

Thanks, Sherri. I am looking forward to reading it and probably wouldn't have held off. So, it's a good thing it's not too much of a hanger. I hope you enjoy the other books in the series.

For the Demons shelf I'll read

Hope everyone else more directly in the path stays safe & dry!

I haven't decided what I'm goign to use for Demons yet. I'm going to focus on finishing my shifter book first. I have a lot on the demons shelf so just need to pick one.

Another winner. I love this series. I don't know what else to say. It was a enjoyable read and I'm looking forward to the rest of the series.

Book: Stray by Rachel Vincent
Completed: 8/28
Shelf: Shifters
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Review: It was a decent read, though I found myself losing my patience with the book's heroine, Faythe. Also, the fact that her name is spelled like that just irks me even more. Faythe never seemed to really think about things past the surface & her mouth usually landed her in more hot water instead of helping her out. I did enjoy the extensive cast of characters. To me, they were what kept me reading. I certainly have a soft spot for Ethan & Jace. The next book goes on to follow the adventures of our surly heroine, though I personally don't think she has the capability of holding my interest for the next three books or so in the series. Part of me wishes that the author would have taken a different route with the continuing books, focusing on another character previously mentioned, instead of giving Faythe more exasperating bravado than she knows what to do with half the time. It was a passable read to occupy my time, but it certainly didn't carry me away like I thought it would.

You now have an updated BINGO card with a stamp on 'shifters'.

Good Job!! :D

Maybe lady luck will be on our side and the next two shelves will be in a row for us and pnr won't come up for a while.

Or Ghosts and Supernatural back to back. We're set pretty nicely actually. We just need Mr. R to cooperate.

I'm so happy for Reyes and Danika. I was surprised by the revelation of why Cronus wanted her family dead. I love Legion and I think Aeron is in for a lot of hassle whenever he finally gets his HEA.
I'm so digging this series. I can't imagine now why I was so reluctant to start it.

This is the first in the Arcadia Bell series. Arcadia is a magician who can see earthbound demons by there halo's (ha demons with halo's, I love it) which humans can't. She has been on the run since her parents were accused of murder years ago and she has been on her own and living under her assumed identity. When her parents are spotted, a rival magic order calls for their deaths or their daughters is forfeit, Arcadia must find the proof that will prove her parents are innocent. She enlists the help of hunky earthbound demon Lon but everything is not as it seems in Arcadia's past.
I really enjoyed this book, all the characters were really well written and Arcadia was really likable and Lon was very appealing and he was even more so when you learn he had a son and how he interacted with him. I was hooked to this story and was kept interested by the investigation.
In the end I was really pleased with the ending as I didn't see it coming! I love a good shock. I will be happily buying the next book in this series.

I'd recommend it! I didn't expect it to be as good as it was and was pleasantly surprised!

On the Prowl ****
It's always hard to give an overall grade for an anthology. I'm going high because I really liked the stories I liked, more than I didn't like the weaker ones.
The Patricia Briggs story is amazing. I can't wait to pick up Charles & Anna's story in a full novel. I also really liked the Karen Chance story and will definitely look into her books. She was already on my radar but after reading this story I'm going to make sure I get to one of her books more quickly.
The Eileen Wilks story was OK. I liked it while reading it but it didn't make much of an impression once I was done. Still I hadn't heard of her as an author before and now I'm curious to read an earlier book in the series to see if I like it.
I thought the Sunny story was a bit of a mess. I realize that this is further along in the series that the others and I felt like I got dropped in the middle of something. In the end, I didn't leave with a great impression so I won't really seek out anything more by that author.
So overall 4*s because I felt that there were 2 strong stories, 1 enjoyable story and 1 that I could take or leave.

Lol! I know exactly what you mean! The next book isn't out until summer next year :(

The way I see it, that gives me time to catch up on other series I've discovered late. ;-)

I hope this was ok to let my daughter read. She's almost 14.

This was a great start to what looks to be a fantastic new shifter series! Alpha pack is a government special ops team full of shifters with some extra talents. This story was based on Jaxon who is a wolf shifter with a talent for time bending! He rescues Kira after she steals things from her employers who she is convinced are up to no good and she is sucked into the Alpha packs world.
I liked Jax and Kira the only thing that annoyed me about the story was the ease at which Kira accepted the supernatural in the world, it would have been more believable if she had cracked a little. Overall though I really enjoyed the story and I'm looking forward to reading the rest of the series when they are released.
