R3 TEAM THREAD: Team #5 ~ Gypsies, Vamps and Thieves

We'll just have to wait and see :)

Book: Magic Strikes by Ilona Andrews
Completed: 8/6
Rating: ★★★★☆
Review: Kate truly is a great heroine and her strength and badassery (Pretty sure that's not a word) never ceases to amaze me. I'm glad we get to see a little bit more in regards to her history and her ties with Roland. Even though I'm impatient, I'm always grateful for the subtle blurbs of history and backstory. Personally, I wish I could see a bit more emotion from Kate. We saw a sliver of worry when it came to Derek in this book, but I felt it was a little underplayed. As for Kate & Curran, their scenes were, by far, the most entertaining and I found myself looking forward to anything where the two of them were involved.

Good Job!! :D

I have been trying all day to finish my favorite-series book and jsut can't do it. Not because it isn't good because it is-but because my kid won't let me. She's 13 and normally doesn't demand all my attention. But today she's been hanging on me like crazy.
But she's decided to play her WII now and maybe I can finish it finally. I'm almost done. Then I'll see what I have for "dark".

I gave it ****.
Just what I needed, another series to get hooked into. But I'm glad I did like it because I have books 2-4 already. I will definately continue with this series.

I blame the size of my TBR on the books themselves...I had nothing to do with it. I'm innocent I tell ya - INNOCENT!!!!!

My TBR passed 1000 this week due to a trip to a closing Borders. And that doesn't count books I bought my teenage daughter that I'll probably read. Or books that I have on my library list or my PBS Wish and Reminder Lists. Although I probably won't get 95% of the Reminder books. Most of htem I don't remember why I put them there in the first place.

I love the Dark Hunter series. That being said, I wanted to like this one more than I did. At some points, I really considered giving it 5 stars.
A lot happened in this story and I loved seeing another side of Valerius. Of course, if you've been paying attention, none of it seems all that surprising. Even the BIG moment in the book (non-romantic plot) wasn't too much of a shock (that is, if you've been reading CoN). That being said, I feel the same about it as the other Kenyon books I've read.
I enjoy them while I'm reading them, I intend to read all the others. When I'm in the moment the story is all I care about. However, I'll have no trouble waiting a while until I read the next.

I'm really torn on these books. One the one hand, I love the world building and the magic and politics of the "otherworld". But on the other hand there's Eugenie herself. She seems immature at best and while she seems perfectly competent in her shaman job she's surprised by things that seem pretty obvious to me in both her kingdom (queendom?) and in her relationships. Overall, a quick and entertaining read with a slightly annoying main character. I've read better but I've certainly read worse as well.

Book: The Forest of Hands and Teeth by Carrie Ryan
Completed: 8/10
Shelf: Dark
Rating: ★★★☆☆
Review: For me, the main problem was that I felt the story flatlined a bit. The climax was underwhelming & I found myself getting more and more frustrated with Mary and her fascination with the ocean. Her involvement with the brothers, Harry and Travis, started off genuinely interesting just like the rest of the book, fraught with young adult angst, but it never really progressed or traveled anywhere new. At first, it had the slight similarities of a young adult version of The Handmaid's Tale by Margaret Atwood. The fanatacism of the Sisterhood combined with environment of a post-apocalyptic sheltered community gave the book a strong start. However, the rest of the action didn't seem to live up to its promising beginnings. I'd say it was a decent zombie read, though overall, I don't feel satisfied or fulfilled by the end of the book. My interest in reading the next book, I would say, is halfhearted at best.

I felt the same way. By the time they reached the last village, I was so sick of hearing Mary obsess about the ocean.
I've heard the second book is better but it still doesn't make me want to run out and get a copy.

As for the sequel, I though it would be a continuation of Mary's story, but it seems to switch protagonists. On one hand, I'm glad we get a break from Mary, but I really want to know how she continues her life after the first book.
Oh and I definitely wasn't expecting some happily ever after with this book, but it was way more depressing than I thought it'd be.

My rating: 4 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this book, it was very different and the premise was fantastic!
The ghosts rose in 1997 and killed a third of the population, religions collapsed and magic became the worlds savior as only they could banish the ghosts. Chess is a debunker which means she goes to people who claim they have a ghost and if they do she will get rid of it and give them compensation from the church, if they are lying they will be punished and Chess gets a bonus. Chess has a drug problem and runs up against her dealer when he asks her to check out an abandoned airfield for ghosts. If she does this her debt will be wiped. She is helped by Terrible who is the dealers enforcer.
It was a great story that had plenty of action and conspiracy and I loved watching Chess struggle with her feelings for Terrible. It was very different to read about a heroine with a drug problem but it really added to the story for me. I can't wait to read more books in this series!

There is a lot going on in this novel and in typical Sookie fashion the wackiness is back. Dead Reckoning does meander a bit and jumps from storyline to storyline, but in typical Sookie fashion it works at emphasizing that her life is atypical at best. There are some minor revelations about Sookie’s history and we get back into the twisted intricacies of vampire politics. Several story threads are left hanging and I can’t wait until the next book to find out their resolution. Overall, this was a welcome improvement to the Sookie Series.

Looking forward to seeing what you think of this one! :)

I've been intrigued by it but I kept putting it off for some reason but the premise seems good :)

Dead Men's Boots****
I'm really liking this series. I loved the concept of the ghosts of long dead murderers inhabiting modern day people. One thing I didn't get is how Juliet the Succubus who isn't supposed to be able to travel over water was able to fly from England to America. I don't remember that being explained.
