Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Does the quiet mean we are all furiously reading?

I finally picked a book for Angels: Solomon's Jar (Rogue Angel, #2) by Alex Archer

message 556: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments I'll probably never start that series - 30+ books?! Yowza! I have a few of the earlier ones, so I guess ya never know. But, it's not on the top of TBR list.

How do you like them so far, Mary?

message 557: by Sandra, Kindle Operator Licence Required (new)

Sandra | 25908 comments Mary, that's the only one of those I've read. I remember saying in my review that it would make a great movie. Lots of action and plenty of travel.

message 558: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I've read the first one Destiny and started this one. I have Solomon's Jar on audiobook. So I'm liking it a lot. It's one of those audiobooks that has sound effects and multiple voices. Very cool. It's buy Graphic Audio books and supposed to sound "like a movie in your head". I need to check out their website.

I don't think the whole series was done in audio and I hate it when publishers do that. I had to get Destiny in print.

They're fairly short reads. If you're into Indiana Jones, National Treasure, Tomb Raider type stuff you might like them.

message 559: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I guess Solomon's jar is longer than Destiny was. I don't remember that one being over 300 pages.

message 560: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Here's a link to the graphic audio site, looks like they ahve the whole series. http://www.graphicaudio.net/p-33-1-de...

I might order the ones booksfree doesn't have. My daughter would probably like these.

I am furiously reading, although I'm nearly done with my book this week.

I still have 40 movies left to watch this month too.

message 563: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Why do you have 40 movies to watch?

Every October I watch 100 horror movies. This is why I've not been as active here on nights and weekends this month.
I watched #60 this morning while on the elliptical at the gym, Slaughter Night. Well... most of it, at least.

Sherri | 781 comments OK, I'm WAY behind on my reviews so the two I need to do are going to be short and sweet so we can get our stamps.

Book Chosen: Blood Sin (Awakened by Blood, #2) by Marie Treanor
Book Completed: October 5, 2011
Shelf: Urban Fantasy
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★

Blood Sin is the second book in the Awakened by Blood trilogy and picks up a couple of months after the first book, Blood on Silk. I really enjoyed this book although it was a bit slower in pace that the first book. However, what it does better I believe, is explore Elizabeth’s conflict about loving Saloman and how that love goes against all her moral convictions. If you enjoyed Blood on Silk you should definitely read Blood Sin.

message 566: by Sherri (last edited Oct 19, 2011 09:38AM) (new)

Sherri | 781 comments and here is my dragons one.

Book Chosen: DragonLight (DragonKeeper Chronicles, #5) by Donita K. Paul
Book Completed: October 15, 2011
Shelf: Dragons
Rating: ★ ★ ★ ★ ½

I love this series! The world building has been exceptionally and the characters strong throughout. DragonLight is the last in the series and it did not disappoint. Kale and Barden have grown and matured throughout the series and we see them on one last final quest to find the meech dragons. I will miss the series, but will be exploring the other works of Donita K. Paul.

message 568: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I'm tempted to stop listening to Solomon's Jar because my daughter would really like this. I can get a used copy of Destiny on audio from Amazon and then trade it on PBS for 2 credits.

I have Strange Angels by Lilli St Crown enroute to me from the library. If it gets here today or tomorrow, I might switch to that. Although that is apparently YA too and something my daughter will like.

Ack-I will finish something by Saturday for this.

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments Shelf: Angels

Raziel (The Fallen, #1) by Kristina Douglas

Raziel - I inhaled this book over three lunch hours (plus a little extra when I could get away with it at work). I found myself fascinated by the world of the Fallen. I'm not usually a big "Angel" fan but this was the first time I've read about the Nephilim being bloodthirsty animals.

I really liked our H and h but I found myself want to slap some sense into both of them. They both fought their feelings WAY too long for my liking and she was particularly bullheaded about the vampire/blood eater thing. Whatever... I will most definitely be continuing this series as soon as I can get my hands on a copy of book 2.

Is that on the Angels shelf? I only ask because I've read it (and the rest of the series) and don't think there are any actual angels in it.

Yep. It's there. I really like that series, fwiw.

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments Oh and YAY! for new stamps!

message 572: by Mary X (last edited Oct 19, 2011 01:03PM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Any word on how close Amanda is to finishing her First in a Series book?

Strange Angels was shelved 21 times as Angels.

I saw quite a few books on that shelf that I've read and know there aren't any angels in them. But someone shelved them that way. I can't remeber specific titles off hand.

message 573: by Carlyn (new)

Carlyn | 466 comments Here is my angel shelf review! Cant wait for new stamps btw!

A Touch of Crimson (Renegade Angels, #1) A Touch of Crimson by Sylvia Day

My rating: 4 of 5 stars

What an interesting start to a new series! The premise is fantastic with angels, vampires and lycanthropes all coming from the same angelic line. Adrian is basically one of the leaders of the seraphim and his war is against the vampires who were angels who fell in love with mortals and produced their childen, the nephalim (hope i'm spelling that right) and when Lindsay makes eye contact with him he see's his future and his past.

I really loved Lindsay in this story! She was such a strong heroine and even though she was thrown into a timeless war she stood up. Her feeling for Adrian were lovely to read and I loved the fact that a new soul got a chance. (Gotta read it to know what that means!)

A great book for anyone who loves romance, urban fantasy, action and a conspiricy!

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Wow, Ladies! Go, GV&T! :D I'll stamp your card and BRB.

Thanks for the info on that series, Mary. It sounds much more fun the way you've described it - esp considering I like all those movies. I have listened to the Caster Chronicles by Kami Garcia on audio (#1-2) and they have the sound effects too. It really caught me off guard when I heard it in the first one, but it's pretty cool.

Cristina, have you seen any really good movies this year? I saw last night while poking around IMDB that there's another Hellraiser? Can't remember the year or exact name, but I know Hellraiser was in the title. Didn't look like the dude who's always played Pinhead on the cover though. So, probably a straight to video type thing. Enjoy the remaining 40!

Alrighty -- off to stamp your card, Ladies ...

A book away from an episode of hoarders (fidgit77) | 740 comments Steph wrote: "Cristina, have you seen any really good movies this year?"

I had forgotten they were making a new Hellraiser, I'll have to check it out.

There are quite a few (new to me) movies that I really liked so far this month.
Insidious, Exorcismus, Killer Movie (a bit tongue-in-cheek, slasher flick), Voices, Blood Creek, Forget Me Not (creepy creatures), My Soul to Take, Dark Floors, Lost Boys: The Thirst (humourous but still horror without being too campy). I also just got finished with Red State which was quite good but it took a little longer, maybe 20 minutes, before I really started paying attention.

message 579: by Sherri (new)

Sherri | 781 comments I'll try to check in my often since we are getting to crunch time.

I'm about 1/2 way through A Touch of Crimson and hope to finish it up tonight. So I should be set for the next shelf announcement. I am going to select a ghost, male author, and vampire book so if those shelfs are announced I'm ready to go.

message 580: by Mary X (last edited Oct 22, 2011 06:30AM) (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments I'm almost done with my angels book. I have about 90m left. I need to charge my IPOD though. It's pretty much drained.

I'm liking this Graphic-audio thing. Although I could do without some of the sound effects of someone smoking or drinking. I have a thing about mouth noises like that. (yes I'm weird).

Sherri | 781 comments Well crap. I was about 30 pages from finishing A Touch of Crimson and got up this morning to finish it. Turned on the iPad and it says No valid license was found for this item. I hate when that happens. :-(

Looking up B&N to see if it is at the local store. Crossing my fingers.

message 583: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments You might be able to read the pages for free if it's searchable on Amazon or Google books.

I need to do that with an audiobook I got from booksfree. I apparently downloaded disc 8 twice and not disc 9. Although I suppose I could just get it again and then just download the last disc. But that would take up over a weeks worth of my booksfree month with it traveling back and forth.

message 584: by Sherri (new)

Sherri | 781 comments Nothing searchable on Amazon or Google. I figured there wouldn't be since it is a new release. It looks like my local B&N has a copy so I swing by today, hang out and have a coffee.

message 585: by KarenF (new)

KarenF (cleocleveland) | 540 comments I finished my "Angels" book:

Envy (The Fallen Angels, #3) by J.R. Ward ****

This was moving along about to be my favorite of this series when something toward the end blew it. The book itself recovered and I did enjoy it but still think I liked the first one the best. It's a little overly long (like most recent Ward books) but it still was quick, entertaining reading. I really liked Veck but Ward generally does good heroes so that isn't surprising. Sophia Reilly was pretty surprising as she's a cop with no supernatural powers and Ward managed to make her both strong enough to seem like a competent cop but without tipping the scales to make her too much of a hard ass. (view spoiler) So although that jarred me out of the story and lessened my enjoyment of it, it wasn't a very big section of the book and didn't last long so overall I would have to say that I still really enjoyed it overall.

Steph (angel4492) | 32703 comments Our Next Shelf is: 'Goodreads Author'
DIRECT LINK: Goodreads author

This shelf gives TWO teams BINGO ~ Double Trouble (#2) and Serious Series Sluts (#3). But, Double Trouble first needs to get their 'dragons' stamp, whereas SSS only needs to read, rate & review their books for this shelf to win.

Good luck to both teams! Happy Reading!

Sherri | 781 comments I'll be reading How to Seduce a Scoundrel by Vicky Dreiling .

message 588: by Mary X (new)

Mary X (marymaryalwayscontrary) | 2484 comments Well poopy. I was hoping it would be one that would give us a bingo. I'll still read it just incase the two in the running don't get theirs all read.

I'll be using The Devil in the White City Murder, Magic, and Madness at the Fair that Changed America by Erik Larson I need to speed read this for my book club anyway. I got in print and audio so I could get it read in time.
