Magic Bites (Kate Daniels, #1) by Ilona Andrews
4 stars July 28 2011

Holy gaucomole Batman!!

What a refreshing change. This book was a bit dark and edgy. I really liked the post apocalyptic world of magic and tech. I felt that in order to really appreciate this novel I needed to read it at night with a flashlight under the covers. The battle scenes were awesome in this magically confused world of paranormal vermin. I really liked the idea of the vampires being gory creatures that are remote controlled by The People, instead of lovable characters (like Bones (who BTW I adore) in the Night Huntress series). The bad guys were really evil creatures.

Here is the paragraph that sold me on this story. It was in the first few pages and I was hooked.

'It took a qualified wizard to detect a summoning in progress. It only took a half-literate idiot with a twitch of power and a dim idea of how to use it to attempt one. Before you knew it, a three-headed Slavonic god was wreaking havoc in downtown Atlanta, the skies were raining winged snakes, and SWAT was screaming for more ammo. These were unsafe times. But then, in safer times, I'd be a woman without a job.'

My only negative comment a bit rough in some spots but I enjoyed it. I do wish there was a bit more back story when it came to the worlds history.Looking forward to the rest of the series!

Sarah Dizon (sarahd828) | 1376 comments Yes, the Kate Daniels series gets so much better after the first book. I didn't rate the first book very highly because it was a struggle for me to get through in some spots. But I devoured the rest of them! I'm glad you're now a fan too!

You should try Ilona Andrew's Edge series.

Sandra | 25908 comments Heartless (The Parasol Protectorate, #4) by Gail Carriger
Favourite Series Shelf 1/8/11 ★★★★

This is the 4th Parasol Protectorate book and I accept that some people love this series & some hate it. I personally love it, just because it is so different.

Alexia Tarabotti, married to Conall Maccon, Alpha Werewolf is a preternatural ie a Soulless. This has all the London vampires in a tizzy because she is about to give birth to a soul stealer.

There is always a mystery to solve, even when 8 months pregnant. Vampire assassination attempts to thawt (sp?) dirigibles to ride in, giant mechanical octopi to evade, etc etc.

Trying not to say too much as the entire book is a huge spoiler. LOL.

Zaanodes | 804 comments Free Space- Ghost Story (The Dresden Files, #13) by Jim Butcher
Finished 7/30 ★★★
I can understand why this was rated higher by so many fans. This story had a lot to do with personal journey/growth aspects. I am not in that place right now, hence, the lower rating. Otherwise, I probably would have rated it higher. And may do so on a re-read...

Pure escapism. Just what I wanted. I can't explain why I liked it. There is no 'That' is what I liked. I just liked it.

If anyone wants to know my book for a shelf, I posted the link or go to My Books BSB R3 shelf. I won't change selections unless one is disqualified. I already have most of them and the ones I don't have are on my Kindle Goodreads Wishlist.

I will be soooooo glad WHEN (not if) I get internet at home!!

I miss you guys on the weekend!

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Finished my book days ago and just kept forgetting to review it. Way to go me. :\ I'm loving BDB...sooo good.

Lover Awakened (Black Dagger Brotherhood, #3) by J.R. Ward 07/30 ★ ★ ★ ★

Well, Zsadist was my fav from day one so I figured I would enjoy this installment in the series. I know me well. I loved Zsadist and Bella's story!

I am always impressed with authors who make a point of developing side plots heavily while telling the main story. It keeps things fresh and helps keep the mind active. Ward does a wonderful job of this considering that although her books are considered by some to be UF, they follow the pattern of PNR. That formulaic aspect can bleed out the interest in books quickly if the pace isn't kept quick and diverse.

Ward did a fantastic job of telling the story of Zsadist's past. Referring to Zsadist as a completely disconnected person (the slave) made him seem even more of an object and put you deeper into the misery that was his life then.

With the exception of a few scenes where Bella was a tiny bit inept, I liked her character. (view spoiler) She dealt with his emotional scars and hangups extremely well. Compassionate and tough are a great heroine combo. :)

I had a moment of wanting to kick Butch in the teeth. (view spoiler) I'll cut him some slack though as he is a bit manic for Marissa and it's making him do 'dumb guy stuff'. The development with V was unexpected and I am excited to see where that little gem heads.

I'm totally reved to read the next in the series. I get the sensation that I might have to just read the rest of the series this month. *sigh* On to Butch's story! Yahoo!

Sandra | 25908 comments Yay, Dana :)

Don't forget there is a novella also re Zsadist & Bella, available in the The Black Dagger Brotherhood An Insider's Guide by J.R. Ward and also as an ebook by itself. No hints from me. LOL.

message 277: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Yeah, I'm weak. Right after my review I went to Amazon and bought the ebook for my Kindle. :) I love Zsadist!

I know what you mean. It's like trying to tell someone why your favorite color is your favorite. 'Oh, I love green. The different shades of the leaves in the trees, etc...' So you like trees? Leaves? But green is an intangible thing with no mass and has a million variations. It is a concept for the most part. It doesn't matter though.

You just like what you like! :)

It was little too sad for me, because of Seth missing and Aisilinn being all sad. It seems that summer king will not get he's loved winter queen or summer queen :( So this book ended for me in dark colors and promise of war...
