I'm from S. Louisiana, though living in Shreveport right now due to Katrina and I have to agree with what you are saying. I have a challenge with books that have "cajuns" in them - especially if they have those cajuns in New Orleans. I lived in Lafayette for 4 years and most cajuns I know have a beautiful sing song accent that would be very difficult to capture in a book. But only the more undereducated say "diss" or "dat". And there are very few cajuns in New Orleans. Many people in NO speak like they are from Brooklyn. Kind of crazy. That being said, I do like the Sharon Sala series that LK mentioned.
