Dov | 15 comments This might not be what some people expect when the they come to chat about sci fi and Fant. But i am in the Market for a good book light. I have an energizer very flexible; only when i don't want it to be flexible; not very bright book lite. it only shines down the center of the page thereby needing adjustment and the beginning and end of almost every line. Keeping in mind the "don't want to wake the gestating/nursing beauty of a wife" factor, i still would like to shed some light on the page.(pun was intended. Was it a good one?) the type of light bulb makes no difference really as long as it is not colored (and yes white is the presence of all colors in the visible spectrum, so please.) Thanks for all of the help in trying to keep the world reading!!

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I picked up a flexible LED book light at Ace Hardware a few weeks ago. It even came with a USB adapter that I could plugin to my laptop. The battery pack holds 3 AAA batteries, so it can be a bit heavy when you add that to the weight of a hardback.

However, I've recently stopped reading books before I nod off at night. Instead, I switched to ebooks on my BlackBerry. That way, when I doze off, the light goes off automatically after 30 seconds.

Sandi (sandikal) I have one I picked up at Target. It's okay, but has a lot of the same problems you mentioned. I'm beginning to think my childhood method of a flashlight under the covers might be more effective.

HeyT | 516 comments I have one I got at Wal Mart that's like a giant plastic paperclip thing. I like it because you can rotate the light piece 180° and the neck extends and bends. I don't recall what it's called exactly but it was the only one they had in their book section. :\

AA | 42 comments I have yet to find a decent book light. I've tried several brands and they all suck the battery life of 4 AA's very quickly. I'm hoping there are some more responses because I would love to invest in one to use while traveling.

Honestly, Sandi's suggestion to go back to a flashlight might be the next thing I try! :)

Jim (jimmaclachlan) Try googling 'reading light'. There's a good review by Tom Bartlett at the top of the hits. Barnes & Nobel has a good selection, too - better than Amazon.

Does it have to be cordless? Batteries really aren't 'there' yet. Too bulky, heavy & short lived. If you could plug it in, that solves a lot of problems. Son't forget that Radio Shack has one-fits-all transformers, they'll even do USB now. There are also a lot of wall mounted flex lamps that might work.

One of my kids got a broken fluorescent lamp with a folding, articulating arm & a clamp mount. He put his own smaller, more directional light on it. He used it for years. It plugged in, but for a while he had a flashlight on it. Duct tape solved any incompatibilities in mounting. Not pretty, but handy.

Gbina | 20 comments My husband bought me a camping headlight for my birthday last year to use for reading while camping. Since then I use it every night in bed for reading, not just when camping! It is great! Doesn't disturb hubby, very focused light, tilts forward and back to put light where you want it, extremely portable, batteries last a long time, and no need to get up and turn the lamp/lights off when bed time finally rolls around. I LOVE it! Best bday present ever!

Here is an example of what I am talking about.

I take with me when I travel. Sometimes I use it on a plane if I am traveling at night. Sure, it might look a little silly, but it is dead useful!

AA | 42 comments @Gbina: What a great idea! :)

@Dov: Thanks for this topic! I never would have thought to just ASK :)

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments This is so weird. I received an ad e-mail from Barnes & Noble about a free book light (if I spend $75!). Well, I went looking at what they had to offer (beyond the freebie promo one) and found this one that got good to great reviews:

So I promptly sent it to my husband as a none-to-subtle hint for my birthday next week. :)

HeyT | 516 comments The one I have is similar to this:

I don't think it's quite the same because mine was hella cheaper ;) I like it because it clips but you can also twist it around and it becomes a stand-alone like a little lamp.

laanba I use a Light Wedge for my book light and it has lasted me for years. I really love it.
