It seems to me ironic that the two letters of Paul which are used by Calvinist thinkers to promote their paradigm of doctrine-based relationship with God are not even asking such a category of question, and in fact have as their primary thrust the practical mandate of living together in unity. Witherington shows very nicely the issues - and how hot the contest was between Paul and the other church leaders. The question was not one of how a non-Christian was to become a Christian.
