Should younger audiences read/watch The Twilight Series?

TheKBSeries Recently I've heard some of the younger kids and their parents complain about seeing Edward's chest on a magazine cover.

Do you think they are overreacting? I mean come on, this wasn't intended for kids anywho. This was supposed to be an adult book (and we can all see why in book 4 hehe). There are many adult things discussed and written in this series.

If these kids can't handle a simple chest exposure then, are kids mature enough to read the series? (kids=13 and under)

And if these kids did read the whole series, then what the heck are they freaking out about? We will see a lot more than chests in the movies and we have definitely read more about chests in the books.

I think it's just retarded of them being all "Ewwww! So wrong of Robert Pattinson!" It makes me mad. I'm mature enough! If these kids can't handle it then don't let them read the books or watch the movies! Gosh!

What do you all think? What have you heard? Have you heard any other stories like this?

Liz Hmmm... I would say there are plenty of 11 and 12 year olds mature enough to read these books, but if they are unhappy about a bare chest on a magazine cover, then they shouldn't read them. It is clear these books are meant for adults and teenagers. Within the first 100 or 200 pages, it is clear that these books are a bit mature. I personally think these books are a waste of time. When I first read them I absolutely loved them. Then I thought about the actual writing instead of the plot and made a very different conclusion. My dislike of the series was confirmed by Breaking Dawn. In my opinion, the writing is just not good.It is all about Bella clinging onto Edward (except for New Moon where she is depressed for months when he leaves her - how ridiculous). I think Stephenie Meyer took a lot of shortcuts as an author (i.e. Bella's speedy pregnancy)and I think Breaking Dawn was flat out bad. But that is just my opinion. I can see how some people would enjoy them.

Lisa Hmmmm,I complained about seeing his chest on a magazine. I'm old, I said EW because it's just not a great looking chest.....and I never remember Bella writing anything about his glorious marble chest having seven chest hairs (yet there they were in all their glory). It was just not a pretty picture.

PandaRanda It was pretty horrifying, definitely "ew" worthy, not because the exposure of skin...but because it was just plain nasty, chest hairs including.

Frankly I don't think the writing OR the plot was any good, in fact the plot itself is pretty dull (Bella meets Edward, Edward, Edward, Edward. Bella meets Jacob, Edward, Jacob, Edward...Bella chooses Edward, gets knocked up, has baby, gets to have a happy family as vampire)...the only thing about the Twilight series that appeals to me is the fact that the characters are so...addictive. They mesmerise people, they make people want to know what they're going to do or say. It's pretty sad, really, but oh well, if the book keeps my attention it's good enough for me, even if the writing and plot aren't all that great. It's the attention holding factor that counts. =P

TheKBSeries yeah i understand about how "Ew" it could be to see the chest hair. lol. i also understand how most people think that the plot is bad. like what PandaRanda said "(Bella meets Edward, Edward, Edward, Edward. Bella meets Jacob, Edward, Jacob, Edward...Bella chooses Edward, gets knocked up, has baby, gets to have a happy family as vampire)" haha. lol. it made me laugh.

don't get me wrong! i love the series but i am also a little annoyed by the plot and the writing quality. i enjoyed the books but i do agree with what most people say. i just ignore it all and enjoy. :)

but thanks for your opinions! i do agree with what most of you say. i hope you still enjoyed the books at least a little bit. i think the idea is fascinating!

Kat Helgeson That's the problem with this movie: Edward the Perfect Vampire was always going to have to be enacted by a flawed human. I feel bad for the kid. Everytime he's imperfect, people are going to be raising hell about how he's not measuring up to the character.

Poor guy can't help it if his chest isn't SuperHot. Most guys have at least a couple of chest hairs.

Liz @ Calipsco
I think parents have more of a problem with the mature romantic elements (i.e. Breaking Dawn), not so much the vampire/blood part. But I could be wrong.
@ Helkat
I agree - Poor guy - all these people are criticizing him for having a few hairs on his chest, he can't help it.

Kat Helgeson Calipsco - I think you have a great point, and it applies to more than just vampires. If parents have a problem with their kids reading stuff, they should monitor that stuff. It's unreasonable to expect teen sexuality to stop existing in literature just because a parent doesn't like it.
