SOLVED. book about 21-year-old girl named Cherry who wants to be a model in NYC [s]

I had to take an exam today and it featured an excerpt from a book, which I'd like to find. The book is about a girl named Cherry, 21, who has just graduated from college in order to be an art teacher. But she decides to leave her hometown and go to New York in order to make it as a fashion model. The beginning of the book has a scene where she's trying to convince her mother and father that she can go to NYC on her own and how she knows that model agencies take care of their models and do not put them in danger and so on. The first lines of the book are basically about her sitting on a bench and wondering how to get to Broadway for a job interview with an agency.

Does anyone know any novels with a main character named Cherry (not her full name, a shortened version of her name)? I think the author was a man, not a woman, if that helps. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help.
