First Grave on the Right by Darynda Jones

I wasn't sure how I was going to take to this debut novel. Especially, since the main character, Charley Davidson, is a P.I. that sees dead people... or more accurately, a grim reaper that helps spirits pass into another plane. As soon as I started reading however, I couldn't put the book down. The main character is quick-witted and stubborn in her antics and the crazy situations she gets herself into really kind of remind me of Janet Evanovich's Stephanie Plum character. The support characters are also pretty zany. There's Cookie her neighbor, secretary, and best friend who helps Charley out of jams except when she gets distracted by pots of coffee; the "Big Bad" who protects Charley but also gives her the creeps; Garret Swopes who is a sexy, protective cop that works with Charley occasionally; and finally there's Reyes who is some sort of entity that Charley can't figure out what he is and whether she should fear him or love him. Overall, First Grave on the Right is a quick, fun read. I can't wait for the next two books in the series to come out!
