He nodded. Unsure of what else to say, he asked, "What's your favorite animal?"

"Frogs and toads. You?"

"Bears," he said.

"Bears?"

"Yep. Especially polar bears. I don't know why. They're just awesome."

"So are toads. But polarbears eat cute baby seals!"

"Oh... right." He rubbed the back of his neck. "Then monkeys, I guess."

"That's my second choice."

He nodded. "Especially those tiny monkeys that can wrap around your finger."

Hayley made a face. "There are tgat sixe monkeys?"

"Yeah, they're so cool. I'd always wanted one, but I'm not sure where and how to get one."

"I wouldn't. It would be easy to step on and lose."

"That's true. Maybe a bigger one."

Hayley rolled her eyes. "Maybe."

He smiled. "Have any pets?"

[Devin]

"Chameleon. You?"

"No pets. Yet."

[Devin]

"What fo you mean by yet." She looked at him weirdly.

"I'm going to get that monkey. And maybe a few cats."

Claire laughed. "Cats? Get some of those hairless cats."

"Ick. Have you seen those things? How are you supposed to cuddle with one of them?"

[Devin]

"Just think of them as super rats." Her grin widened.

[Christi]

He shuddered. "Ew ew ew ew ew. Can't stand rats, either."

Claire made a face. "Wimp."

He grinned. "What about a tarantula?"

[Devin]

"I would love a tarantuala. As long as they don't bite me."

He nodded. "And a snake?"

[Devin]

Claire nodded. "Of course."

He grinned. He hadn't expected a girl to like the things that most would consider creepy. "Do you like sports?"

Claire nodded again. "Basketball."

Claire smiled. "I sometimes play it."

"Cool," he said. "Play any instruments?"

"I know, I know," he said. "But it sounds cool. And it's a good way to meet chicks."

Claire laughed harder at that.

He grinned. "I think that's why some girls choose tuba. To meet dudes. Not always, but sometimes."

"No. I just like to play baritone."

He nodded. He knew that for her, trying to catch a guy's attention was something she really didn't want. "Any other hobbies?" he asked.

She raised her book. "Reading."
