Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I did not compare Twilight to Vampire Night. I have never read Vampire Night. I did not compare Twilight to anything. Except that it was in the YA section of the library. Christopher Moore books, You Suck and Blood Sucking fiends are hilarious yet good modern vampire books. Extremely funny Goth girl Abby Normal makes Raven look like a dork. In this one part Abby is calling these San Fran police detectives fags and loosers. "Could you two look any more like cops" says the manga cool Abby. The cops say "hey little girl did you fall asleep with a black magic marker in you mouth",LOL YOU SUCK rocks. I have Blood Sucking Fiends next. Then Dead Until Dark should arrive with Sookie Stackhouse. Yahoo!

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments The first modern vampire books I have truly liked are "You Suck" by Michael Moore featuring Goth girl Abby Normal. A cigarette smoking, coffee slinging mouthy little ho. Love her to death. Then I started Charlaine Harris book from the Southern Vampire series. I am reading "All Together Dead" and have "From Dead to Worse" waiting and her first book Dead Until Dark on the way. These are the Sookie Stackhouse books that HBO's TrueBloods is based on. They rock! So if your looking for new books there you go. Please don't forget to read the classic gothic vampire books. I you have not read them you sure as hell should. Carmilla and Dracula especially. Cary

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments More books to read. If your over 14 you will probably like Charlaine Harris Southern Vampire Mysteries. Dead Until Dark, All Together Dead, From Dead to Worse. They are about Vampires coming out of he closet and living amongst humans due to the developement of synthetic blood called TrueBlood. These books borrow heavilly from Buffy the Vampire slayer in that they are not just about vampires. There is a whole realm of were wolves, demons, witches, telepaths, faries, creature from other dimensions, and of course Vampires. Explicit sex, violence and all that good stuff. Really great books. Plus don't forget "You Suck" a fun vampire story with killer goth girl Abby Normal. Best goth girl charecter in a vampire book easily. Cary Druid Wizard

well if you are idk about the show i havent seen it but the books are great "

The show was actually pretty decent. It has alot of sex and drugs in it though! I made the mistake of watching it with my dad for the first time and boy was I embarrassed! My husband was sitting in between us! :) LOL I have now learned to preview shows before watching them with my father!

message 158: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Series books kinda suck. But the Sookie Stackhouse books are readable. No wear near Carmilla or Dracula in depth and imagination. Just a bunch of demons, witches, weres, and vamps. Very pulpy and totally ripped off of Buffy. I have not seen the TV show at all. But the Sookie Stackhouse books are readable. Blue Bloods is just plain garbage and only readable if you are facinated by the rich and fashion concious. I talk to used to talk to my parents abut sex and drugs all the time. How wierd are your parents real religious or something?

message 159: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube LOL No my Dad is not religious. But if you watch Tru Blood the "sex" scenes are closer to porn than anything else. LOL It is really embarrassing to watch that with your Dad and Husband. I loved the show, but it is not something I would recommend watching with your parents.

message 160: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Damn I had no idea. I am going to have to find someone with HBO and catch an episode. Thanx fer letting me know how rowdy it was.

message 161: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube No prob. LOL

message 162: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah I can't wait to tell my friends. Most people I know have been waiting for a replacement show for Buffy. We thought we had it in "Moon Light" a show that was basically killed by the Hollywood writers strike. I loved Joseph the oldest vampire in L.A. Beth was really hot. Mick St. James was good as the star vamp. The show had possibilities. I guess it did not have enough sex, violence, and there were not any drugs. Yeah it had possiblilities to bad. In Sookie Stakhouse they have her new lover Quinn who is a were tiger. This belief is common or was in India around the turn of the century. Man eating leopards and tigers are exceedingly strong and cunningly intelligent. So intelligent as a mater of fact that in the case of "The Man Eating Leopard of Rudrapryag" everyone was convinced he was a were leopard. He would brazenly enter peoples homes and cuningly grab victims by the throat so they could not scream and bite through their neck and then just trot of with them like a big cat with a mouse. This story is well documented by Jim Corbet the man who hunted this animal on the Pilgrim Road in India for a couple years before he could kill it. He also eliminated several man eating tigers who were also accussed of being were tigers. Because of their clever familiarity with humans. One would walk through villages at night moaning. Scratching at doors and scaring the hell out of poeple. It was discovered latter he had porcupine quills loged in his left paw. Which were infected and very painful when he walked. So passing through villiges looking for victims he would let out a low moan every once in awhile. Some of these animals had a carrier of years and ate up into the the 1,000 mark in human beings before finally being killed. Cary

J.D. Stroube I actually watched Moonlight. I liked Joseph a lot too. I was irritated that the show was cancelled, because if given half a shot it might have done well.
Tru Blood finished it's first season. You could probably find the episodes on Itunes or something. I think that the second season starts sometime between April and June. Not sure on exact dates though.

message 164: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Itunes what on earth is that? I get on the internet allot but I need a new computer for downloading long files. The switch to HDTV has been a disaster here in Oklahoma. No one is getting good signals and only half the stations come in. Yup Moonlight was good. However you make TrueBlood sound pretty freaky interesting,LOL.

message 165: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube itunes. You know you use it with an ipod. LOL I guess you dont have one of those. Ummm there are other sites online that you can download shows from. I dont think Tru Blood is on DVD yet, but they might be showing repeats of Tru Blood on HBO.

message 166: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Cool how funny. I play blues guitar. But I dont have an ipod, cellphone, or allot of the modern gagetry most people have. I just got a notice from the library. Dead Until Dark is waiting for me. I believe that is book one in the Southern Vampire Mystries. Whoo hoo! Books for now. Books are better. But it nice to kick back and just watch vamps on TV sometimes.

message 167: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube Okay so...I don't know if you have read the vampire diaries by L.J. Smith...but on L.J. Smith's site is says that the series may be made into a TV series on the CW! The script has been approved, but it is going "head to head" with some other scripts. Still is is a new vampire series. Plus it was my favorite series growing up! Yeah!!!

message 168: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments When I am finished with the two Sookie Stackhouse books I have. Then I will call my G.F. at the library and tell her to get me Vampire Diaries so I can check it out. Who hoo! The more vampire shows the better. I really miss Buffy a whole lot. Buffys and Angels last seasons just freakin rocked!

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I like the Underworld series of movies. I would like to see Underworld "Rise of the Lycan".

message 170: by Cary (last edited Mar 04, 2009 01:59PM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Read Sookie Stackhouse books they are allot of fun. Kinda like Buffy in a way. Vamps,Weres,Demons,Witches,Telepaths, interdimentional beings, straight and gay characters. Even the teenage vamps are so old they don't come across as dumb ass teens. It's the only series vampire book that keeps my interest. It has vampires that are cool understanding but devious. Best of all they are not in school. Vampires that are pure evil. People who are more evil than the vampires. Just plain fun to read.

message 171: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube My husband is readint the Sookie Stackhouse books right now. He's on the last one, and he really liked them. I loved Tru Blood, and he said that the first season of Tru blood is exactly the same as the book. So I think I am going to read it soon. I have a few other books I want to read first...
LOL I actually like the vampire stories with people in school, I just hate that they are too innocent. Like they make a big deal out of kissing, when the truth is that people in high school really dont think that way. I mean when I was in high school the kids were doing WAY more.
I want to see the new Underworld movie too. I was going to see it in theaters, but it got poor reviews so I decided to wait until it comes out on DVD.

message 172: by Cary (last edited Mar 05, 2009 05:32AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah well the woman who wrote the Kissing Coffins books. She defintily made parent friendly vampire books. Goth girl Raven doesn't smoke, drink,do dope of any kind, and is a vegetarian. Plus she uses cutesy little phrases like RBI Raven Bureau Investigation. WTF Now all the Goth kids I ever knew. Were outsiders who were a bit odd. Smoked, had sex,did Xtasy, weed and any other drug they could aquire, and danced there ass off to trance music and ate anything they cold get to eat. Most of them not being rich enough to pick and choose what they ate. What parent is gonna let the teen read a book with bad influences. Even the wicked vampires are like spiderman or something. Thats why they are in the YA section of the library young adult ages 10-16. LOL. Have you ever read the original Dracula. Christ evil for sure. He tosses down a baby in a sack. To feed his three vampire wifes. EVIL. I have seen two stage productions of Dracula. The New York one and one done by ASU in Tempe AZ. They both rocked. Nothing better than a good play with live actors. You can tell a book is great literature when they make a stage play out of it. What parent wants there kid to read that. I still think the two old school masterpieces Carmilla and Dracula make these new books look kinda. Well just not very literate,LOL.

message 173: by Mina (new)

Mina Time Lord (thewanderer) | 35 comments Yeah, the original Dracula was pretty awesome. He wasn't just you're run-of-the-mill vampire, he had class, on top of being totally evil. Being Gothic myself, I tend to find the original Dracula much more attractive than the modern vamps.

message 174: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Wow I dig the way you think. Thats pretty much how I see it. I like allot of the modern vamps. But that one old classic tale. "Dracula" is the vampire bible. He has looks, royal majesty, courage and wisdom. Which is why he has lived so long. Why he is the the King of his kind.

message 175: by Mina (new)

Mina Time Lord (thewanderer) | 35 comments Yeah. I mean you can see a vampire from almost any story and think
'hey cool a vampire' but Dracula is in a totally different class. It's hard to even compare them.

message 176: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well its a different genere of writing. I think however the old time stories with their base in old Gothic/Slavic superstitions are the best. New stories either have some hokie sceinctific reason for vampirism or don't bother to explain it at all. Dracula was written around a real evil Romainian nobleman as I am sure you know. But also the book takes full advantage of Slavic folklore. Walpurgis Nacht and St Georges Day. The superstitious Walachian Gypsies outcasts themselves make up Draculas private army and servants. Taking the place of the mortal attendants and body guards he would have had in life. Because Dracula is such an old vampire he has had time to learn all the dark occult arts and become a master Warlock and Sorcerer. You can tell that Dracula was well researched in occult lore and Slavic tradition. Carmilla is written in the same fashion and was a heavy influence on Dracula. Carmillas family coven has Gypsy servants and guards. Lots of references to Slavic/Gothic folklore. Gothic being any beliefs, art, and architecture evolved in the middle ages. It just gives those type of vampire stories more depth, credibility, and spookyness.

Gabrielle (gabriellefaust) That is actually a self portrait the photographer of the photo took. He's a Polish goth. ;)

Thanks for posting that cool link Erika. I've never heard of "House of Night" series before. It so really kneat & interest. I have always been into vampires since I was little. So I enjoy to read about them alot. This book is going to my reading list. If I enjoy the first novel to the series, I'll follow it. =)~

It used to be everyone pictured vampires in capes. Now they are oftern dipicted as mod goths. I like vampires to look pretty much like normal people. Maybe wear darker clothes. I think its because of the new genre of literature I would term teen vampire romance. I always thought Spike on Buffy looked cool in his long black leather jacket and Billy Idol lookin hair.

message 184: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Cool lots of new Vampire Books. I just got Definitly Dead by Charlaine Harris. I will tell yah though. Carmilla and Dracula will always remain the two best Vampires stories ever written. Actually Carmilla is the last case file collected by Dr. Hesselius in "In A Glass Darkly". Old school Gothic just cant beat that stuff.

Dead as a Doornail (unread)
Definitely Dead (reading)
All Dead Together (read)

Waiting for the realease of the next book

J.D. Stroube The Vampire Diaries is officially going to be a show on the CW! By what I understand they changed a few things for the show. Elena now has a 15 year old younger brother, and it sounds as though they eliminated Meredith's character!

Kami D WOW!! tats awesome, i wish it was a movie though

message 188: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments My how vamps are becoming so popular.

message 189: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube I almost think that it is better for it to be a show b/c there will be more of it. If it was a movie we would only have 2 hours. With the show we will get 1 hr per week for several seasons! I love who they picked for Damon, the actor looks similar to the way I envisioned Damon. I am disappointed in who they picked for Bonnie's character though. I mean Bonnie is supposed to be this cute little irish girl, and the actress looks nothing like the Bonnie from the books...:(

message 190: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well Buffy stared as a Movie. Then went to a TV series. A good long lasting TV series with spinoffs at that. TrueBloods is an excellent vampire TV series. It has just finished its first season. With mixed reviews. I watched clips at the TrueBlood website and it was almost exactly like book one Dead Until Dark. With the popularity of vampire books. It only makes sense that they would make their way to TV. Probablly Vampire Diaries will probably be a fun series. But Buffy the Vampire Slayer both Movie and TV series paved the way. If they make a Twilight TV series about teenage vamps in High School. I will personal shoot the producer,LOL.

message 191: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube Not a fan of Twilight, huh? So you did get to see some of True Blood! The second season starts in July! :)
Happy Easter Everyone!

message 192: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah I have read almost all the Sookie Stackhouse books. The vampires are my type. Some of them are nice but they are all dangerous and unpredictable. You can watch all series one of TrueBlood online. Easter? Whats that? Just kidding happy Easter.

message 193: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube My husband finished the Sookie Stackhouse series and said that it was amazing all the way through the last book!

message 194: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Cool I have read about half of them. The first three and the next to last book. I had too skip over 4 & 5 to Definitly Dead. So I missed Alcades Dad getting killed in a fight for pack leader of the were wolf clan of Shreveport. They are written from a womans perspective. So I thought I was strange for really digging them. I mean like Sookie is always talking about what cloths she is gonna wear to impress some guy. Rather interesting actually,LOL

message 196: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube As far as I know they have only recently picked the cast for the Vampire Diaries. The pilot should be on sometime this fall, but no date has been set. By what I understand...it depends on how well the pilot does on if they will continue the show. So when they show the pilot get everyone you know to watch it! LOL I am already spreading the world, so hopefully Vampire Diaries will go through the entire season! I really miss shows with Vamps in them!!!!

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments The Vampire Diaries is another Vampire in High School from the YA section of the library. There are a gazzillion fan sites for it. Pilot episode. Elena shakes up her brother because she thinks she smells pot? OH Please its something someones parents would love for sure. Elena shoud have shook her brother down for a reefer and then fired it up with him.

message 199: by J.D. (new)

J.D. Stroube LOL I am sure it'll be better than it sounds. They have a lot of content to work with b/c there are two vampire Diaries series. So far she has finshed 5 books, and a lot of things happen in the series. I mean there is everything from a love triangle, werewolves, psychics, angels, demons, etc. Im betting that the first episode is not what the series should be based on. I mean there are tons of episodes that start out bad, but end up being amazing shows!

message 200: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah well thats true although Buffy took of with a bang with episode I "Welcome to the Hellmouth". I have the book "the Girls Got Bite" which has a synopsis of all the first season. However later season's like the one with Riley, Buffys paramiliary lover just totally suck. Episodes with Glory the Godess caught far from the Hellfires of home, and looking for the key "Dawn". That season was good, and as far as I am concerned the last season was the best ever. That goes for Angel as well. At this point I can't be to picky. There are not any vamp shows on the major networks. I don't have cable so I watch TrueBlood espisodes on line. I am getting a nice apple rig in a month or so and my computer can double as a TV. They have that new Hulu broacast that has TV online. Should be cool.
