Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments This is not a book but a great short story by H.G.Wells. The famous Victorian science fiction writer. It is a short story and concerns an astronomer who is wathcing the night skys with his scope in Borneo. There is a local legend of a huge man sized bat living deep in the jungles of Borneo. One night while the observatory window is open and the astronomer is at his scope one of these creatures wanders in through the opening. I must appologize I have forgotten the name of this story. However if you look over a selection of online H.G.Wells stories you will recognize it is about a giant carnivorous bat by its title.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments If you are in grades 7-9 they are kick ass! I feel so betrayed because no one is writting vampire stories that have any depth or substance.

message 104: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments If you check out the section of the library where those House of Night books come from. It is Young Adult which signifies it is for readers in school grades 7-9 or people 11-17 years of age. Actually Rachael those books are for girls. Not really dual geneder books. I think your a nice person and I am not trying to make fun of you. Everybody likes what they like.

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Underworld is a great vampire/werewolf movie. It rocks!

message 107: by Kelly (new)

Kelly (kellymorgan) | 4 comments Thats why I love Anne Rice's vampires and her stories. She has fully captured the right mood and I am desperately hoping she will write more.

message 108: by Cary (last edited Feb 06, 2009 01:14PM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Anne Rice I can handle Kelly and I dig Armand the most. Rachel your a wonderful girl. This is all about Vampires and liking them. We all can't agree all the time. But we can at least be cool with each othere's preferences. Cause liking vampires is good enough. You know what else? I feel so good today!!!!!!!!!

message 109: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Oh dances can be fun. I never liked dances until the 80's when they had cool bands like "Electronic" and Joy Division, Haddaway, plus all kinds of cool punk stuff. I saw the B-52s twice at a small club when nobody knew who they were. I met this strange girl and was rolling on the floor. At the same place we saw the Ramones and DOAO dance our asses off,LOL. Oh my dances can be fun!Wooo Wooo!!!!!!!!!!1

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Far out Rachel I was supposed to go out but I am sitting practising guitar alone. Tha'ts how you get good I guess. I saw the greatest episode of Ugly Betty last night. There is this really blatant gay guy who is not bad looking and works at Bettys fashion mag. So he hooked up with Bettys room mate this really cute hot little blonde who digs fags and fashion. Now the two of them are an item and really getting in on and digging on each other. He took Bettys room and they live together and he is bi now at least. What a really grooy little ending. Oh this is a discussion about Vampires. Sorry for straying of topic. Your OK Rahcel I hope you DYAO,LOL. Cary

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments http://www.horrormasters.com/sub-genr... This werewolf story is real short and will rock your socks. Horrormasters has all sections Vampires,Werewolves,Gothic Horror. This story "The Thing In the Woods". Short and spooky like only Slavic stories can be.

message 113: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments There is a killer Vampire TV series on HBO called True Blood with Sookie Stackhouse Louisiana waitress and cursed fang banger. It rocks with killer vamps who are not teenagers in school, just young and cool!!!!!!!!!

message 114: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Fang Bangers how freaking coolio!

message 115: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yup Sookies sire is about to bleed this creep and Sookie reads the guys mind " ha go ahead vampire and get infected with the deadly Hepatitis D virus I am carrying". So Sookie warns him not to drink from this dude. So they kill him instead. Hep D is a new blood borne infection like AIDs deadly to vampires. True Blood rocks on HBO.

message 116: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yah cool now I have to get HBO. Or go over to some friends house. The True Blood HBO site has a synopsis of the first dozen episodes. This is the shows second year just starting.

message 117: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I have a friend at the library who found me two great books she says I will like. I told her to look up the books written by the lady who wrote True Blood. I practise slide guitar everyday. So I really have a lot of interests that are more important than watching TV,LOL. I will see an espisode soon enough.

message 118: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I like were wolves too. I am sure your werewolf book is pretty cool. But I do not like books written as a series. The first book is probably great. Books are mainly written as series because the author is not clever enough to come up with new ideas. Plus the publishers will pay lucrative contracts to make a book into a series if it is popular. So you have authors spining out books to meet deadlines. Whether they are good or not. I like the books that are collections of short stories. Or single long stories. http://www.horrormasters.com/Themes/W... "The Thing In The Forest" is what I am talking about killer short slavic werewolf story. No cute characters. Just werewolfs.

message 119: by Cary (last edited Feb 10, 2009 06:24AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments http://www.horrormasters.com/Themes/W...
For cool werewolf stories. Check vampire section for great vampire stories. Check horror section for all the great works of Occult and Satanic writing by H.P. Lovecraft. Killer, Chiller, no Filler.

message 121: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments You got that right! Horror masters rocks! Sookie Stackhouse rules. I have to books at the library that are Christopher Moore books, Blood Sucking Fiends and You Suck,LOL. Cheersssssssssssssssz

message 122: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I hate series they are predictable and boring. Case in point Carmilla and Dracula are a short story and a single book. Both have more depth and developement of characters and plot than reams of boring paperwork done by series writters.

message 123: by Adrian (new)

Adrian | 15 comments u r rite
there shud b 1 buk
but it shud b long!!

message 124: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments How funny after all I said I am reading a series my friend at the library got for me. Christopher Moore books First book "You Suck". Not a bad book. I think he is a vampire writer of single stories. Second book "Blood Sucking Fiends" is on the way. They are not bad but humourous books. I don't like vampire humor. I like dark, spooky, serious vampires. So I got "Blood Red" by James Moore a single long book that tries to be serious and spooky but really sucks,LOL.

message 125: by [deleted user] (new)

LJ Smith's Night World and Vampire Diaries series are both really good. Plus I think she is adding a book to the Vampire Diaries series so its not over yet... lol im so excited about that. Vampire Kisses by Ellen Schreiber is a good but short series. The House of Night series by P.C. and Kristen Cast is really good. The Vampire Academy novels are good. If you are into manga try Trinity Blood, Chibi Vampire and Vassalord. Trinity Blood and Chibi Vampire also have novels that go along with them. Ahh i need to go look at my books i have so many more good suggestions...

message 126: by [deleted user] (new)

The show true bloods about the Sookie Stackhouse books is ok but the books are way better... thats kind of expected tho..

message 134: by Cary (last edited Feb 14, 2009 04:59AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments I just panicked I figured it out. I have Dead Unitl Dark and Definitly Dead on order from the Library. My friend at the library had ordered it for me. But she also got me You Suck and Blood Sucking Fiends not bad books even though they are kinda amusing and funy. I thought she might have not been able to find Dead Until Dark. I couldn't find it at first but I had made a typo. I like serious were sending you to hell biatch type vampire stories. Anyway Sookie Stackhouse must be good because there were 14 holds on some of Charline Harris vampire books.

message 135: by [deleted user] (new)

ya true bloods has really made those books popular

message 136: by Cary (last edited Feb 14, 2009 09:28AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yes indeed from what I read of the movie synopsis. "Fangbangers" as a term for outlaw vamps that feed on humans. In an age where most vampires fit into society and drink the synthetic blood developed by a Jap scientist. Some however cannot deny their nature, Fanbangers love it! How up to date and appropriate. I wonder is Sookie a vampire herself? Or just a friend of the one vamp in town. You suck is kinda funy in a wicked way. Like the blue prostitute. She got the idea from the "Blue Men". Those guys who paint themselves all blue and then do rythm pieces of music on steel drums. They would just be anothe bunch of can bangers if they were not blue. How very funny.
Christopher Moores books have a very sly humor and different vampire mythos. Like when they drain a human the human turns to dust in "You Suck". If they want to be wicked like the evil old vampire Sopir. They break the neck before sucking the blood out completely. This leaves a dead body. Really odd set of results from a vampires work. Much different than your standard vampire results of an attack on a human.

message 137: by [deleted user] (new)

thats actually a cool kind of twist... lol what an excellent way to cover your tracks.... kill them and then just sweep um into a dustpan and throw them away... thats diabolical... lol well so far sookie isnt a vamp yet... as far as iv read at least... it could happen in one of the future novels

message 138: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Doesn't Sookie have a thing for a vampire in the town she lives in? I guess she will be like Buffy screwing vamps and not letting herself be turned.

message 139: by Stefanie (new)

Stefanie Ellis | 3 comments Ashes

I just wanted to let everyone know about my book: Ashes. While I read through the thread and see that most of you aren't into the YA vamp books, I just thought I would throw it out there anyway. For more info on the book check out my website at www.StefanieEllis.net

Thanks!

message 140: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah his name is Bill... kinda a odd name for a vampire but yes she is kind of like buffy... kind of.... lol

message 141: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well these are modern vampire stories. You really wouldn't fit into a town very well calling yourself Vlad or Mircalla. I still like the classic gothic, occult, evil, gone to hell vampires of the slavic tradition the best. But the new stuff is good too.

message 142: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Ashes I think there are more YA readers here than any other age.

message 143: by Adrian (new)

Adrian | 15 comments ok...

message 144: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Well everyone loves Twilight and Kissing Coffins they are in the young adult section of the library ages 11-16. You Suck is definitly adult. It has a hilarious and accurate parody of a goth girl in Abby Normal. There are no super heros and they go straight to the wild sex and killing but it is all hillariously funny. But for real the balance of this group is Y.A. I don't think half the people have even read Dracula. There's nothing wrong with that we read what we like. No one but me seems to have read Carmilla, a story I read at 15 before vampires got trendy,LOL.

message 145: by [deleted user] (new)

i like dracula... but i think i like more modern vampires better... dracula could be killed way to easily... but yeah i guess ur right about the whole name situation.

message 146: by Cary (last edited Feb 16, 2009 11:19AM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments How could you read Dracula and say that? Numba one Dracula could walk in the sun. By day he only lost his occult majic powers. Besides terrific strength, he could turn to mist, teleport, shape shift into wolf or bat,and command the weather, and command wild animals like wolves, hypnotise people to do his will. Cause storms and read minds. He had the wisdom of 500 or more years. Are you sure you read Dracula?

message 147: by Cary (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Yeah with powers like that you could be killed way to easy. Modern vampires burn in the sun, cant teleport, they are only strong and fast. So was the original Dracula. Even in his coffin asleep if he locked eyes with you you could not kill him. Like when Johnathan Harker finds his casket and tries to bash his head in with a shovel. But only succeds in bashing the counts face before he is willed away and runing from the crypt.

message 148: by [deleted user] (new)

Jonathan Harker did not have very much will power... I just think that dracula had been around for to long.. i think he got to comfortable in his own strength when really all anyone had to do was cut off his head and stake him in the heart

message 149: by Cary (last edited Feb 16, 2009 02:26PM) (new)

Cary (vortigern) | 804 comments Harker had no idea that vampires even existed much less how to kill them. He was brave indeed to seek to escape the room Dracula kept him locked up in during the day. He had been locked in this room and had to scale across the castle walls from one window to the next hundreds of feet up the side of a high cliff just to get to a window and escape his locked room. Then go in search of he knew not what. He found Draculas casket in another part of the castle. Opened it and was horrified that the person who imprissoned him looked dead and was in a casket with blood on his lips glaring up at him. He was so horrified he hit the face once with a shovel and ran. But he could not excape the level of the castle he was in. When night fell Dracula caught up with him. He was then locked in a more secure room and left for Draculas wifes who bled him very weak. He watched the Gypsies come and take Draculas casket away from the window the next morning. He knew if he did not escape the castle by another terrible climb down the wall the three vampire women would finish him. Weak from blood loss he edged his way around the outside of the building by perilous hand holds. Across the castles side which was on a high cliff above a river gorge. He managed to reach the court yard and get away where he wandered in a fever until he found a village where Catholic nuns took him in. Sure you read Dracula? By the way Dracula was not killed by a stake. What weapon peculiar to America killed Dracula? You'll have to read a good part of the last of the book to find out. I myself have read it at least 5 times. My G.F. and I used to read each other a chapter each night before bed.

Dylan wrote: "I'm reading the manga Vampire Knight. Wow! It's amazing, it's kinda like Twilight only bloodier!!! :D "

I disagree, it's NOT like Twilight. If everything is now going to be compared to Twilight or measured-up to Twilight... can I kill myself yet?
