It made me happy to scroll down and see someone had already posted this...

I have too many lists going on to start anymore right now, plus I feel my sci-fi & fantasy reading has grown out of proportion within the context of my reading overall. Still, it's an interesting list.

There are things to read besides fantasy.... *quizzical look*

message 53: by whimsicalmeerkat (new)

whimsicalmeerkat | 0 comments Sure, but I've already read most of the stuff on the list that isn't either sci fi or fantasy xD. Besides, I'm already working on the full version of this list. Combining all three versions that have been released gives a total of 1294 books. Also, the 200 book version of this.

message 54: by [deleted user] (new)

Ah I remember you mentioning these lists to me before. I think I'll stick to my goal of reading every fantasy book ever :)

message 55: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (breakofdawn) I'm just sticking to my goal of reading every book I own.. After that I'll worry about lists!

carol. | 2616 comments I'm lazier than that... my goal is to read stuff I like. And signs.

Danielle The Book Huntress (gatadelafuente) This makes a nice little reading list. And I can definitely see some of his influences (and why I loved The Name of the Wind so much).

I think an author should be well read, for no other reason than that they that are writers, but of course that can't always be the case. I am not saying that you have to be well read to be a good author, somethin Rothfuss has proven here."

The guy owns more books than my local library and has read 1 to 3 fantasy books *a day* throughout his teens and many more since. I really don't see how you can say he isn't 'well read', just because he hasn't read a couple of books that are well known and you deem important. :/

Heinlein is actually in 4th place on the list. :p
And how do you know he never read Norton? Maybe he just didn't deem it good enough for his personal top 40 (well 60 really).

Heinlein is..."

You're right, I missed Heinlien. But the fact that he doesn't deem a GRAND MASTER (Norton) as important is BS IMO.

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) LOL It takes all kinds, MrsJ! ;)

message 64: by [deleted user] (new)

So uh... who's this Norton chap?

carol. | 2616 comments *throws gummybears at Ala*

message 66: by [deleted user] (new)

Did he invent gummi bears?

Is he a chef?

message 67: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments Yes, she's a chef who cooks up remarkable delicacies, both small nibblets and longer five-course meals. Absolutely delish.

Scott He protects my computer.

message 69: by [deleted user] (new)

So he's an antivirus and a chef too?

message 70: by Becky (new)

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Wasn't he also a baby dragon? Oh no wait, that's Norbert.

Carry on. :D

I have never read (or even heard of, until recently) Andre Norton. I'll admit though, if I was to see her books in stores, the covers would not inspire me to give them a try.

Recommendation?

message 73: by carol. , Senor Crabbypants (new)

carol. | 2616 comments *ponders why so many readers judge books by their cover*

although it's true; I use covers to screen for seriously romantic plots. If there's a couple with a death clench on each other, I usually pass (unless I know the author).

Becky (beckyofthe19and9) Carol wrote: "*ponders why so many readers judge books by their cover*"

LOL Why shouldn't we? I don't judge a book's content by the cover, but it will certainly impact whether I, without any other information to go on, will pick up a book I see or if I will pass it by.

Books with unappealing covers get a pass from me, unless I know more about it. Books that have covers that don't really represent the book itself, or that don't call out to me, get a pass.

Like, for example, this one:
If I Stay (If I Stay, #1) by Gayle Forman vs If I Stay (If I Stay, #1) by Gayle Forman
I gave this book 5 stars when I finally did read it, but it took the 2nd cover to grab my attention and make me pick it up. The first cover doesn't represent the book at all, and it's pretty, but I'm not really interested in pretty. *shrug* I saw the first cover and thought "YA chick lit" and that isn't what it is at all.

I consider book covers to be a book's introduction to me, and it has about 1 second to make its impression on me. If it fails, then it'll take other intervention to get me back around to it - like a recommendation. ;)

Yeah, some of her covers are very....dated, lol.

I love her Witch World series, so I recommend you start there: Witch World. It comes in a omnibus, too! :-)
