Divergent
question
Four or Tobias? What name suited him better?

It really bothered me 3/4's into the book when they started calling Four Tobias and I started to wonder if I was the only one who felt like this. There's a process in my mind when I read that goes like this: 1.Meet character. 2.Get to know their personality. 3. Get used to them and their personality. And when the name changes, all of the original traits are gone because the brain isn't registering the same name as before. And the authors don't usually add in their traits again.
Don't get me wrong, I mean, I love the book, but this part was just completely illogical.
So... Four all the way for me!

I really liked Four better then Tobias. I felt like Tobias was his abnegation name and Four was his Dauntless name. It wasn't like he started calling Tris, Beatrice when he found out her name.

It didn't bother me at all. I associated Four with the cold, focused trainer, and Tobias with his true self.

Practically taking the words right out of my mouth. Four was more of the brave leader, but Tobias was the loving, kind, person, contained inside Four.
i think she did it on purpose like four is dauntless and tobias is abenation.
It was hard for me to get used to his name in the beginning because it was so unusal and then when I finally got the hang of it Tris started calling him Tobias and it kind of threw me off. But in the end I felt like I knew him because I knew his past and was using his real name, a name that he wanted to be known as.
I feel that Four gives to his "dauntless" bad boy persona but Tobias tells the truth about what he is like when he is just being himself. So i feel both names fit him.
I completely agree! It changed my whole view towards him! I love Four and only Four!
Actually I like them both. They are like alter ego's of eachother. Four - the focused trainer guy who is intimidating and awesomely awesome.
Tobias - His secret soft side. Four's alter ego with a past that he hides. His secrets.
I think that by sharing his real name (Tobias) with Tris, it sort of showed his trust in Tris and that he does have a past and he has changed. It was a sort of him/Tris moment and it showed closeness between the two and he has skeletons in his closet and things like that and he shared them by sharing his name (after all Tris heard the rumours about Tobias' father). So, I don't see what the hullabaloo (funny word I know but I'm in a fad of it at the moment) about his name it. They're both fine names and it's not really the names you have to pay attention to - it's the character.
Plus Four isn't his ACTUAL name, it was just a name he got in the Dauntless compound, much how Tris's name is Beatrice but she got to change her name after initiation. So technically, Four isn't his real name it's Tobias.

It was kind of confusing at first. I wasn't used to "Tobias" and sometimes i'd be like "Wait, who the heck is TOBIAS?" lol and then i'd remember. But i think Four suits him better. Four's like the stronger, mysterious hot trainer from dauntless. And Tobias was this loving, sincere, misunderstood boy from abnegation. Truly, divergent. :D
He'll alwways be Four to me. That's what I called him for most of the book anyway.
nahh...He will be always Four for me, its a kind of unique for me and easy to remember...And it make sense anyway, a couple named after numbers; Tobias as 4 & Beatrice as 3's
LOL!!
LOL!!
I liked that he revealed his real name and true self to Tris. It just showed that he genuinely cared about her and trusted her. It was clear he didn't like the name Four. Having Tris call him by his given name was a way of showing her that his feelings for her were genuine even though he couldn't show her how he felt all the time. I think the name thing was a pivotal moment in their relationship.

Honestly, I don't like it at all.
I mean, he's always Four to me - when I talk about it, type about it, etc., he's always Four, not Tobias. Tobias is the old him - who he was when he was in Abnegation, someone who he isn't anymore, and Four is him, all grown up and a mature adult who's learned to handle things on his own and is more unafraid. Much more Dauntless.

I loved the name Four and I was kind of startled and annoyed when suddenly he was Tobias.
I think that Four sounds cooler but when she calls him Tobias its kinda like a 'only for them' kind of thing and it makes the name more special than just a stupid name... Idk if that made much sense to anyone.
I think both are fine. Tobias is more passionate and he acts more human in a way. Four is the do what you have to do guy and a leader. I was attracted to both of those personalities though. The name Tobias holds his past and is powerful, more defined in Insurgent, but Four is intimidating and hides what he wishes to forget. To me, Four is the extirior and Tobias is the interior. Four sounds more badass though.
It Bothered Me Too. I Was So Used To Four And When The Author Started Calling Him Tobias Through The End Of The Book I Was Mad. She Should Have Just Kept Calling Him Four. ( Hope She Doesn't Call Him Tobias In The Second Book.)
Alright! I think Four is for just talking and being all in love but when things get serious for to Tobias! Im used to Four but I like Tobias just as much
FOUR!!!!!!!
i think of tobias as a different person. one i didnt like very much
Four suits his personality better, and i got used to the awesome name!!!
how do you even pronounce tobias???????

I think they both suit him, they both show a different side of him. Four: Dauntless, Tobias: Abnegation, however they both fit whatsoever. Tobias is his inner-self in a way, and I feel like it's a connection between Tris and him. Both names suit him, no doubt about that.
I like Four, just because that's cool. Four. ha.
Tobias is kind of a cute name though, so I liked that name too.
If were Tris, I would probably call him Four infront of his friends and stuff, and call him Tobias when it's just us.

I liked Four, but to be honest it was really just because it made him sound awesome. Like, once you know what his name means, everytime someone calls him Four it's like a shoutout to his awesomeness. To me, Tobias will always sound like an abused abnegation boys name, and Four is a hot, almost fearless dauntless teenager.
Actually, I kinda liked the name change. It didn't bother me at all, and I kinda liked him as Tobias better than Four, but that's probably just me. I was able to make the switch easily and I thought it was kinda sweet how Four/Tobias wanted Tris to call him Tobias than his other name.
Totally agree.. Four suits him better than tobias.. espiecially after they already named him four to start with..
I hate when you get to like/know a character but the author changes their name.. it totally mucks it up.

I know, right? Tris automatically started calling him Tobias, even though she went months calling him Four. You just can't flip a switch and think, "Oh, that's Tobias," when you've known someone as a different name for as long as Tris knew him.
IM GLAD IM NOT THE ONLY ONE. Tobias was the kid of the stories; Four was the character we all love.
so true. I knew that tobias and four where the same but still the moment the name changed it was confused so horably. i still sometime think that there 2 differant people. and its like they are. GIRRRRRRR!
FOUR ALL THE WAY!!! i have the same thought process but i still LOVED the book and can't wait for the next one and the movie. but now when they call him Tobias i think of another person.
Four. I loved Four; he was awesome. Tobias was so, so, annoying. He was a totally different character. I hated the character of Tobias, because he didn't fit and stole away all of Tris' freinds fron the narrative; three quarters of the way through, the whole thing was a Tobias love fest. Why couldn't he have stayed Four? Four suits him better. He changed his name for a reason.
FOUR all the way.
I hate (like H A T E) the name Tobias. I hate it when authors change the characters name!!!

Am i the only one who like Tobias better? It actually sounds like a real name. It also showed you that he wasn't just some fearless dude, he was a divergent lover. haha!
Four. Four seems to signify a new beginning, so to speak. While Tobias was more a reminder of Marcus and his old life.
Tobias to me is a ridiculous name to call him after we've come to know him as Four. Four just has the right feel to it, Tobias sounds too foreign.
It didn't bother me. It symbolized his divergence, if he was only Dauntless, then it would have bothered me more. But, he isn't. He isn't just Dauntless, he's also Abnegation; he isn't just Four, he's also Tobias. As the story went on Tris saw that.
The name Four sounds brave and hot. And Tobias. Well, it's just IT. Maybe because wen Four was introduced all his personality stick to that name, Four. And when we found out that he was Tobias too, well, we were just confused whether they share the same traits. Because for me the two names sounds like two persons.
