Pick-a-Shelf - How to...
Well, Karen that all sounds very ambitious. I'll do my best to follow it, but not sure how much time I can commit to this. At times I'm even struggling to find my way around this site. There is no way I can keep up with the number of books you read. You do extremely well! It will be interesting to see how this idea develops.Carole S

Karen, there is a listing in this link for 2009, it does not appear on your EXcel graph, was it missed or should I eliminate it from my shelves?

Hi Betty, the 2009 shelf isn't in the Excel spreadsheet because at the time it's not one of the top shelves so for the purpose of the game, it doesn't count :)

I am new to this group and do not know my way around yet. Please let me know the shelf for April, I may have missed it somewhere, but I am anxious to begin.
Barbara wrote: "I found the answer, I think. April's shelf is Travel and I am to pick one from that shelf, right?"Welcome Barbara :)
Yes, April = Travel. Pick as many as you like from that shelf.
Jennifer wrote: "hey everyone I'm new and just wondering if its cool if we reread a book...let me know...gracias"Absolutely, you may choose to reread for the monthly shelf or for the games Jennifer
The shelf links have not been working properly on Goodreads since yesterday, was having the same problem. If you type Fantasy into the shelf search box though it shows up. It's the weirdest thing. I'm sure they will fix it soon.
Hi All, Im new to the group, and I have a question: what is the purpose of the "bookshelf" section on the home page, under the 'Pick-a-shelf' group area? Are these all books you have read in previous months?
Every month a shelf is picked for us to read from, and a new discussion folder is started. These are the books that members have read from that shelf, and then posted about in the discussion folder for that shelf. If you go through this months Romance folder, it will give you a bit of an example. :0)

I've just joined the group and love the idea. I do need challenging to go outside my comfort zone. I love challenges. I think I'll start in September now - although I will take a look at August's shelf

Now off to choose my September reads.
Welcome from one newbie to another!!
I have just jointed the group and I am not quite sure I follow the shelf picking either. What is the shelf for February?
Ignore that last sentence of my comment, I figured it out :) Luckily I have one of the books on the list that I can start.
Welcome to the group, Michele. Glad you figured it out. We should be getting a new picker for March soon.
Hi fellow readers! I am new to this group and i'm very exited to explore different genres :). I guess i'll start the march challenge as feb is almost over. How do I find out what shelf it will be for March? Thank you
Hi, Katey! Welcome! Our March shelf will be Dystopia. The link is in our group description, and there is a thread in the Monthly Discussions folder to post your plans.Edit: There is also a link to the Dystopia shelf in the thread where you post your plans.

Thanks Luann I can't wait to start :)
I joined the group the very end of March, so this is my first time to try posting. I figured out where (and how) to add the books I plan to read in April, and to cross out the one I just finished. (I think that must be what you have all been doing with the cross-outs.)
But I can't find a place to post my review. Someone point me to the right place, please?
Also, is it the group's practice to write shorter reviews to post here, or just copy in whatever you posted in "My Books"?
Thanks! I'm really looking forward to this. It seems like a great group!

Susan - The shelf picker (in this case, BJ Rose) should be starting another topic under Monthly discussions for April's shelf. She hasn't done it yet, but I'm sure someone will nudge her!
Blarneygod wrote: "how do you copy and paste links and cross out?"To add links to your post to books and authors, use the "add book/author" link right above the comment box. Clicking on that link pops up a search box where you can search the book (or author) you want to link to. You can also add book covers to your posts using that same search box.
To cross out links, or any text, you use html. In this case, you put <_s_> (without the underscore) at the beginning of the text you want to strike out, and (again without underscore) at the end of the text. Click on the "some html is ok" link at the top right corner of the comment box to see GR's explanation - and other html you can use in your posts here.
Is it possible to search a shelf for a particular book? In this month's case, there are 730 pages, so I don't want to go through them all. But I just got a book from the library that I've been on the waiting list for, and want to check out whether it's on this month's list or not.
you can always check the shelf list under the actual book, that's what I do sometimes.Click on the link to the book your reading
then on the right hand side there should be a list of popular shelves it's listed on
If you scroll through the whole list you will see what shelves it falls on.
In cases were there are a lot of pages I usually only go up to 3 - 2 people have shelved the book
Mind you it depends on how desperate I am to use the book :0)
I hope that helps, I know it's wordy
I keep accidentally clicking on April when I mean to get to May. Just a thought about organizing the discussions. How about if each discussion were also titled with the number of the month (e.g., "03-March" or "10-October" rather than just the name)? That way, the automatic alphabetizing would always keep the most current one at the top for us.
No big deal, but I thought it might help.

Okay Susan they are all dated by year & month, plus I have marked the current month as important so it will always be listed at the top until we pick the next month :0) I hope that helps
Hey guys, I am new to this group, still finding my way around =). So which genre of books are we reading this September??
Hello everyone - I am new to this group but I am really excited about expanding my reading. Being that it is the end of third quarter at work, I'm kind of writing September off. If I can get through the 3 books that I am trying to read right now before the end of September (ha!), then I will read a latin american book from the shelf. Otherwise, I am set to go for October.
When does the October genre get selected? Thank You!
Sarah wrote: "When does the October genre get selected?"Hi, Sarah! Welcome to the group! The answer to your question is: soon! First the shelf picker has to be chosen, and then they choose the shelf for the month. I try to send the email to the current shelf picker explaining how to pick the shelf picker sometime before the 20th - although sometimes the month gets away from me and someone in the group will have to gently remind me. Since I'm thinking about it now, I'll send the email right after this to get the ball rolling for October.
Hi everyone! My name is Monica and I am new to the group. I think I will wait till the October shelf is picked due to the fact that I am reading 5 books right now and don't think I will finish them anytime soon. I look forward to expanding my reading with this group.

Firstly, goodreads has shelves (which is created by all goodreaders).
Secondly, goodreads has sorted them into 'Top Shelves' which you can find from the below link.
http://www.goodreads.com/shelf/top_sh...
How this group is going to work is for a member to choose a shelf for the month (for example: fantasy). Other members then may choose a book to read which has been sorted under the Shelf of the Month (following above example: Green Rider by Kristen Britain). You can read more than one book if you want. After you read a book, please post your review & rating on the thread for the month's reading.
If you've checked the link above, you'll notice that there are pages & pages of top shelves. So we're going to limit our top shelves choices to only those shelves which have at least 1,000 books on them. At the moment, this is only the fist 2 pages of Top Shelves. This may change in time.
The member to choose the next shelf will be determined by the previous month's shelf-picker. Their choice of will be limited to those members who have read & posted their reviews in the monthly book discussion (of the month previous to the currently active one; ie. if it's October now, then for September reviews). Please be considerate in your choice and if possible choose a member who has not been chosen recently so as many people can have a turn on the shelf picking.
NEW RULE (WEF now): To be eligible as a Shelf-Picker, your pofile must be set up to receive messages. This is so we can notify you of being chosen.
To assist in timeliness, we would request the next shelf picker to be picked & possibly notified by around the 20th day of the month (give or take 1-2 days) at the latest. If the chosen Shelf Picker doesn't respond within five days from the first notice, a group poll will be posted with a list of shelves chosen by the moderators for a group vote on the next month's shelf.
The shelf picker will have the option to choose a picture to be used as the group's avatar for the month / shelf - reflecting their choice of shelf. Otherwise, the choice will fall on the moderators.
A shelf which has been chosen previously is out of the possible list of shelves for at least 2 years (24 months). This is just so we continue with our goal in reading a wide range of genres and not repeating a particular genre too often.
A list of previous Shelf-pickers and picked shelves can be found on google doc, here
