Both games are ongoing...especially Bookopoly. We are on the last round of Wheel-of-Shelves, but many of us have yet to complete the first round. So, if you want to join us...jump right on in.

Muyina Hello! My name is Mel and I'm from Buenos Aires, Argentina.

CluckingBell | 327 comments Welcome, Mel and András!

András, those two are my favorite games. Bookopoly is really easy to work in around other challenges. The main goal you face with this game is to complete your selected book within 4 weeks of landing on the space (to buy a property, you have to read a book of a specified length within 1 week, but you don't have to buy any property to play).

Your personalized goal for each round of Wheel of Bookshelves is a percentage of what you read last year. I think the cumulative goal for all 4 rounds will be 50% of pages read in 2017, so there's plenty of time to join in on that challenge, especially if you're planning to read more this year than you did last. :-)

Maya Shah | 1 comments Hi! My name is Maya Shah. I am a newly published teen author who has loved reading and writing my entire life! I really love science fiction classics like A Brave New World and Slaughter-House Five, which inspired me to write my own book, The Demon's Angel.
This group seems really cool with people from all over the world. I can't wait to hear all the diverse literary perspectives!

Kayla (kaylaneson) Hi there, I'm Kayla.

I'm 24 and originally from Ohio but I recently moved to Iowa.

Before college, I always had a book with me. During college, I started branching out in genres, but after graduation I struggled to pick up anything. Since my move, I've been trying to change that.

Welcome András, Maya, Kayla, and Mel! I think it is exciting that this group is international. What a great way to share our cultures - through books!

Congrats, Maya, on your newly published book! What an accomplishment!

message 1158: by Sarah (new)

Sarah (sarahnoid) Hello there! I'm Sarah, living in Houston, TX. Since falling back in love with a treadmill, I've also rekindled my love affair with reading. I've noticed I tend to stick with similar genres (dystopian YA) mostly and I'd like to branch out a bit. Looking forward to March's challenge, but having a hard time narrowing my choices down to one.

Jayme(theghostreader) (jaymetheghostreader) | 1284 comments Sarah, we all have that problem ☺

Julie Boglisch | 1 comments Hello! My name's Julie. I'm a twenty-four year old woman from Connecticut turning twenty-five in a few days. I loved reading, had entire bookshelves that filled my room with books, but over the last few years I've found I've been struggling to get through a book with the same ease I had as a kid. Hopefully, I can change that soon. I really want to get back into reading more. Especially with my second book coming out.

Welcome, Sarah and Julie. I hope you find this group as enjoyable as I do. Tien, our fearless creator of challenges, is terrific in finding ways to work on that TBR...although most of the time for me, I end up adding books rather than diminishing that list!

I also like to build things in my free time. Last weekend I built a website called QuotesLetter.com that recommends books you might like based on their most popular quotes. I'd welcome any feedback or suggestions if you're interested!

Liz (hissheep) LIZ here ... this GR group immediately caught my eye because I NEED to lighten the TBR load! But I don't know what discussion/challenge to start with ... don't want to rush into this, panic, get distracted, and quit ;o( Slow and steady wins the race ... maybe I should name myself "Tortoise"!

Hey, Mallory, welcome to the group!

If you click open one of the threads titled 'what will you read', in the first post, there will be a link to the book list and you can pick any book in that list.

I hope that's making some sense :)

Some of the challenges are scalable, like Moving Mountains; you can start with a single-digit goal and expand later (or not). LOST is just the 10 books you've had on your to-read list the longest. And the monthly shelf is the shortest-term commitment, and it's only one book (though you can read more if you want).

Bookopoly may be the most intimidating at first because of the sheer mass of its gameplay, but it's one of the best for "casual" readers because it's pure fun, no goals or minimums to speak of (well, you kind of need to read at least one book a month, but the worst that'll happen if you don't is your thread where you record your moves could get archived). It's pretty easy once you're set up and have made your first move or two, and if you start midyear you'll be a veteran by the time next year's land rush begins! :-)

Nice summary of the games, CluckingBell.

Maggie the Muskoka Library Mouse (mcurry1990) Hello all! I’m an old user of Goodreads, but haven’t been active for the past couple years while my girls were super small. Now that they’re a little more independent, I plan to up my group participation! My husband and I live in Muskoka, and I work as a librarian. We have two kids, and we all love to read. I’m the biggest reader by far, but I’m sure the girls will catch up soon. I love any and all genres, but I have a soft spot for a good family drama!

Lindsey | 4 comments Hi my name is Lindsey, I live in Canada but am from UK, I am a sporadic reader, starting lots, finishing a few. Want to read more, finish more and broaden my range ( lot of crime drama and tends to UK / European authors)
Bookoply looked a bit intimidating but am going to give Pick n Mix 2019 a try
Everyone here seems to read hundreds of books and have very extensive lists.
I have a lot of work to do!

Thanks, it feels like a whole new language I'm learning and there are so many abbreviations, but hey, I didn't even know what tbr meant yesterday, so that's progress!!
Isn't it strange how a load of unread books in my house yesterday, now feel like a project I can't wait to start instead of stuff I feel guilty for buying and never using. All I did was join a forum and add them to a list!

message 1197: by Rebecca (new)

Rebecca (bekkaburr) Hi,
My name is Becca. I really like the idea behind your group to expand genres. I don't find myself reading one specific genre I just tend to read what I find to be interesting or read books my friends/family recommend.
I would like to go through all of the books that I have either on my bookshelf or kindle and work my way through reading what I have before I get more books. I find myself using an app called Libby to listen to audiobooks when I would typically listen to music while I walk my dog or drive to work.

message 1198: by Tien (new)

Tien (tiensblurb) | 9035 comments Mod
Hi, Becca! Welcome to the group.

Do you like reading challenges? We have a number of them and they are usually to help readers to go through books on their TBRs :)

I've got Libby as an app on my phone too although I rarely use it. I find the catalogue to be rather limited. I find Borrowbox to have a much larger catalogue.

message 1199: by Sandra (new)

Sandra Hi, my name is Sandra. I love the idea of this group. I am trying to get out of my comfort zone and expand what genres I read. I tend to stick to high fantasy books. I would love to narrow my TBR. I normally add books to my TBR and then forget about them. Now I see books that I've added as 'want to read' and forget why I was interested in them in the first place.

I buy the books that I'm really excited about and the ones that I want to try, I borrow from my library. I'm also really into graphic novels so I tend to borrow those from Hoopla.
