SOLVED. Three book fantasy series where main character memorizes a "spell book" before his father(?) burns it. [s]

I remember reading the three books in hard cover format and they were all equally thick (a few hundred pages each maybe).

It is fictional, fantasy (with wizards, spells and odd creatures) - but what I remember most is that, as a child, the main character was forced to memorize some type of spell book. Once he memorized it, the book was burned - I believe so that the evildoers couldn't get the book.

Jed - The title and cover art of the the first book (with the dragon) looks familiar. If it is the right series, I had no idea there were 12 books. Either way it looks interesting, so I guess I have some reading to do! I'll pick up the first book and report back if this is it, Thanks.

I agree with Jed. Sounds like Wizard's First Rule (first book in the Sword of Trust series) by Terry Goodkind.
