Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments Sounds like Basolisk with a lithp.

message 2: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I really felt the tension ramping up here. Banks didn't even have to say claustrophobic for me to already be feeling it in those tunnels, which are pretty cool, I must say.

Hahahaha! Three Iridan thumbs up for the joke.

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments Thanks, Cindy. I felt a whole lot like my lame Dad when I wrote that in. Next thing you know I'll be wearing black socks while mowing the lawn (thanks the gods Erika mows the lawn. I do the laundry instead). Love the Iridan thumbs ;)

Cindy (newtomato) | 121 comments As long as you don't start shouting at kids whilst mowing the lawn in the outfit, you'll be fine.

After I wrote that, I began to wonder if Idirans even have thumbs? They don't have three arms - didn't the third arm turn into the chest flap that makes a noise?

I did a quick search on Google Images, and there is a lot of fan art out there of people trying to imagine the Idirans.

Speaking of which - it's really these sections that gave me a much better idea of the alien-ness of the Idirans. Banks had to go in much more detail about their keratin armor, their resilience, and cleverness.

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I really love the appendix for that too (is it actually called an appendix? I don't have the book handy). I am going to look for that fan art to see if it matches what I see in my mind.

message 7: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (fireweaver) | 344 comments wow, in this chapter, horza really lets his true colors hang all out. he slags off machines ("they"ll do what they're told", "machines ought to know their place"), balveda (enjoying the thought of shooting her before pitching her down a shaft, teasing her about morning grumpies), most of the rest of the idirans besides HIS idiran...

he's an ass for most of this chapter, right up until he makes a conscious decision not to be. (view spoiler)

message 8: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments Horza is a hard to like protagonist.

message 9: by Jon (new)

Jon (jonmoss) | 889 comments I think I like just about any other character ... but Horza. :)

message 10: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments Good, so it's not just me.

message 11: by [deleted user] (new)

The only character I actually liked was the little droid/bot/mind/fixer guy. I can't remember his name.

message 12: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments You really didn't like this book, did you Ala? You've inspired a new thread.

message 13: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) Ala wrote: "The only character I actually liked was the little droid/bot/mind/fixer guy. I can't remember his name."

me too!

message 14: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments You guys! You didn't like Jabba the Cannibal?!

message 15: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) i think "slowly ate someone to death while drowning him in excrement" is about where i checked out of the novel...

message 16: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments But you finished Promoted to Wife. Sorry, Joel. Couldn't resist.

message 17: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) that was for class.

message 18: by Michelle (new)

Michelle (fireweaver) | 344 comments Joel, Brad, I'm horrified. "promoted to wife"?!?! that's worse than chapter 1...

message 19: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) i said it was assigned reading!

message 20: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I have to come to Joel's defense here. Ceridwen and Elizabeth assigned it, and what could we do? (yes ... i read it too).

message 21: by [deleted user] (new)

Did you two piss them off or something? Was this some form of payback?

message 22: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I don't know about Joel, but I entered the punishment willingly ;)

message 23: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) sometimes i get drunk and join goodreads bookgroups, and they make me read books with bared male chests on the cover.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Brad wrote: "I have to come to Joel's defense here. Ceridwen and Elizabeth assigned it, and what could we do? (yes ... i read it too)."

Godamn it, I DID NOT assign that book. That was democracy screwing you over. Someone else even came up with the poll choices.

message 25: by [deleted user] (new)

The plot thickens.

message 26: by [deleted user] (new)

I also got plenty of payback in the form of reading it myself. So.bad.

Huh. Sorry I'm all up in the thread not talking about Phlebus. I think I even own this. Maybe I'll join in later.

message 27: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) i can't wait to hear what you think about the cannibalism and excrement-drowning scene!

message 28: by [deleted user] (new)

Check please!

message 29: by [deleted user] (new)

(Seriously though? Yuck.)

message 30: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments It is seriously yuck. But kinda amazing in its way. Did we all vote on Promoted to Wife?? So that was the fault of everyone? Yikes.

message 31: by [deleted user] (new)

Yeah, I hate us. Why are we so mean to ourselves?

message 32: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) i voted for it... :(

message 33: by Brad (new)

Brad (judekyle) | 1607 comments I think I changed my vote once for the cowboy book and then went back to Promoted to Wife. I could mock myself, but really ... would any of them have been better?

message 34: by Joel (new)

Joel (joelevard) i haven't read them, but no.

message 35: by [deleted user] (new)

So... you really punished yourselves?

You've all got some issues, man.

message 36: by [deleted user] (new)

They're not all so bad. Some are even good-ish.
