While I like Moon's work, especially the Esmay Suiza section of the Familias Regnant series, and most of the Paksennarion books, I felt that this was juast a little too much like what she's done before, piracy threatening civilized places, treason and corruption wreaking havoc, the good guys combining miraculously to save the day. The lengthy setup is good, but the ending, completed in a single book, seems a bit quick, given the size and complexity of the forces being maneuvered.

I agree. Ky gets too good too quick. I also prefer Esmay.
@JefferyYes it’s an enjoyable book (and I also love Moon's work) but I feel betrayal by this so quick ending. I would have loved a more elaborate finish for this remarkable story.
For my point of view, Familias Regnant finish is also a bit quick but better worked
I think she wanted to turn the page (nice metaphor for a writer) and do something else.
Sorry for my poor english
[Edit]inverse Familias Regnant and Vatta's in my sentence (shame on me) [/Edit]
I thought that this was the best book in a rather disappointing series. I like space opera, even when its rather cliche like this series. But I found some of the situations that Vatta encountered rather ludicrous.
I actually enjoyed the original book in the series, and found Ky's experiences learning to be a trading captain more interesting. I have a feeling Moon switched to something she was more familiar with in the second book, moving back into a rehash of other stories with mercenaries, secret liaisons, and so on. From that point of view I found Esmay's story to be better and more realistic.
I still like Moon as a writer and like her science fiction books.
