Joan How do you get to listopia when inside Goodreads?

message 353: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments If you are in the website, click on "Browse" and then "Lists".

If you are in the app, touch "More", and then "Explore". This one is tricky, because you will have come featured lists, but no search box! Or at least I couldn't find it yet.

message 354: by Joan (new)

Joan I'm using the mobile app, thanks for pointing the way.
The listopia menu only shows 6 categories: YA 2017; Chick-lit you shouldn't read in public; books I wish I hadn't read, genres and some others. I can't figure out how to browse listopia lists.

message 355: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments I had the same problem last week, Joan. There's no search box and I couldn't find a way of searching for lists. I just waited until I was in my computer. Annoying... :[

Joan In the mobile app on an iPad, how do I link to books when posting comments in discussion threads?

message 357: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Joan wrote: "In the mobile app on an iPad, how do I link to books when posting comments in discussion threads?"

I don't know that you can. You may need to use Safari and the full website on your iPad.

The mobile app is the most useless thing. Last night, I was trying to look for information on an author and the "author profile" on the app only showed the books he's written. I had to switch to Safari and the full site to get more information on him.

message 358: by Joan (new)

Joan I'm a lunkhead; I didn't think to use the full site through my browser. For 2 months I've been cursing the app!

LOL!

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments You are not the only one, Joan. I was complaining about it to my daughter after I had my Android tablet for about 2 or 3 months, and she said "why don't you log into the Internet version?" I think I just stared at her for about 5 minutes as the "wheels were turning in my brain". All I could say was "I never thought of that."

I use my iPod for looking up things, if I have wifi available. I use my tablet and old Nook primarily for reading, but I keep the wifi turned off because it sucks the battery life so quickly. If I am at home and charging, it is okay. I usually do not log-in to the Internet version unless I am on my lap-top, either at work or at home.

The mobile apps are good for looking up books and updating status and that is about all. I also read posts, to keep in touch, but do not respond quite as much. It is too frustrating not to be able to link books, but I don't worry about it a lot. I try to go back and link them, but it does not always happen. :0)

Joan Hmm if I used an iPod, a tablet, a nook, a laptop and a cell phone I would spend so much time misplacing technology I'd have no time to read :)

ROFLing!

It is not quite as bad as your post makes it sound. My phone is NOT a smart one and my tablet IS my Nook. It is my source for all ebooks from Barnes & Nobel and Kindle and via the library on Overdrive and 3M. Although my tablet will allow me to listen to audio books, I use my iPod for that because it is so much more portable. I could read on my iPod, but prefer not to (I do have one book loaded onto it for emergencies). My laptop belongs to the company I work for, and I rarely bring it home although I can any time I want to. Many people take theirs home every night. (I stare at the darn thing all day - I don't need to all night too.) I can work from home, if I need to through the company fire wall via my internet connection. Since my old PC died, my iPod and tablet serve as an internet source, when I need it.

I use my iPod for pretty much everything, when I am not reading or listening to a book, and if I have a wifi connection, keeping up on FB, playing Suduko and WordBrain, checking the weather, looking up words and using Safari for research and You Tube for videos, as a camera and keeping track of time. It is my alarm and timer and watch and radio via Pandora. I do not even wear a watch any more. I do not watch TV any more. I do not miss it at all. If I need a news update, I can get it at work.

Joan The great thing about my desktop computer is it stays where I put it, unlike my phone and tablet which scurry off when I'm not looking.

That is the way my daughter feels.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I can appreciate this sentiment! Very true... tho my desktop computer seems to give me more problems than any of my other devices combined.

message 366: by Joan (last edited Jan 21, 2017 11:28AM) (new)

Joan When using the "add book/author" option in a comment box is there a way to search for a specific edition?
I read The Picture of Dorian Gray and I have the correct edition on my shelf but I want to post the correct cover in my 2017 challenge thread - but there are hundreds of editions to sort through.

message 367: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments No that I know, Joan. What I have done in the past (if I can't find it manually among all the editions that appear in the add book feature) is saying "This is the edition I read" and then copy and paste the link to the main page of the edition.

Hopefully someone else has a better solution...

message 368: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments Not that this will help you this time, but maybe for a future book, if you search by the ISBN in the "add book/author" search, it will bring up that specific edition, rather than searching through all the pages of editions.

message 369: by Joan (new)

Joan Thanks!

Yes, you can. When you find the title, there is a link under the add button for "other editions". Click on it and away you go!

The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde , The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde , The Picture of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde , The Picture of Dorian Grey by Oscar Wilde

message 371: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments I think the problem was that this book has 100 pages to sort through of 'other editions' and Joan was hoping there was an easier way.

message 372: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Oh.... yeah.... I see that now. Hehehehe! And here I thought I was being oh so helpful.

message 373: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments You are helpful, always. :)

message 374: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments Very helpful! I actually never notices the "other editions" link! Thank you.

message 375: by Joan (new)

Joan If I move a thread that I created from one folder to another by using the edit option, will it mess up anyone else and will my links and the posts stay in the same order?

Specifically I would like to move my personal thread for the 2017 challenge to the YLTO member zone because the way I organized it has created difficulties for Janice.

message 376: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Jan 23, 2017 08:10PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Moving a thread from one folder to another doesn't affect links or order of posts.

However, each person should only have one thread for the challenge and it should be in the Year Long Challenge folder. We try to keep folders and threads organized to some degree.

message 377: by Joan (new)

Joan How do people reserve places in their personal threads for year long challenges?

message 378: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Joan wrote: "How do people reserve places in their personal threads for year long challenges?"

I'm not sure exactly what you're asking here. Do you mean reserve a post so that you can go back and edit it later and so that spot doesn't get taken up by posts from other members? Or do you mean something else?

If it's the former, just right reserved in a post and save it. That's what I do.

message 379: by Joan (new)

Joan Thanks, I thought it was something tricky when I saw it in Almeeta and your challenge threads.

message 380: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Almeta gets creative when she reserves a message. She has that little spider than dangles from a thread.

message 381: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments Almeta is our thread's artist.

message 382: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Very clever. "Thread's artist" and spider dangling from thread : )

message 383: by Joan (new)

Joan I've noticed that some people put @ or # at the beginning of comments, usually before someone's name.
What do they mean?

message 384: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I use @ before people's name if I'm speaking directly to that person. So if A said something and I wanted to respond to her directly, I'd write @A (meaning at A). I've not seen the hash used on GR before other than when people are using hashtag remarks like you see on twitter / instagram.

message 385: by Joan (new)

Joan Sarah does adding the @ send an alert to A in that case?

message 386: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments No, not on goodreads. But when you do it on twitter and Facebook it does.

message 387: by Joan (new)

Joan @Sarah, thank you, see I'm learning!

message 388: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I didn't know about @ preface sending alerts to person on Facebook and Twitter. I don't use Twitter much at all, tho I've been pretty active on FB at times. Not so much now.

Thanks, I had never delved that deeply ...

message 391: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I notice that sometimes peoples' comments post multiple times, usually just twice. This happens to me quite often, and I have no idea why. I try to keep watch and delete any duplicate posts. Once, I think it even posted my comment 3 x. Any ideas about why this happens or if I need to do an update or something?

message 392: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Pretty sure it's to do with the app. It doesn't seem to happen on the main site. I know it happens but I don't know why. Might be worth having a look in the Goodreads Feedback forum as I'm sure it's probably been discussed there.

message 393: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments I get it a bit with the app. It's easy for the post button to register twice. Twitchy thing. Sometimes happens on the computer, but that's usually me being impatient and clicking the button too much :P

message 394: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I agree that it must be the app, but it also hasn't happened in a while.. It never happens to me in the main site.

TJ - You might check to see if your app has the latest update. There have been several updates for the GR Apple on my iPod lately. I think there was an Android App for my tablet last week. Also, make sure you turn your device completely off and on once in a while.

message 395: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments The other thing you can do is search the group "Goodreads Feedback" for discussions on the problem, or start a new message. They should have all the answers.

Joan Tejas Janet wrote: "I notice that sometimes peoples' comments post multiple times, usually just twice. This happens to me quite often, and I have no idea why. I try to keep watch and delete any duplicate posts. Once, ..."

It happens to me too, but only when I am traveling. I think it is when I have a weak internet or wifi signal - perhaps the duplication happens if the transmission is interrupted.

message 397: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Thank you for all the feedback and suggestions. Weird thing is that it only happens to me at home on my desktop pc. Seems counter to everyone else. Maybe I need to update something-- ?? Oh well

message 398: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments I'll try searching Goodreads Feedback, and see what I come up with. Thanks.

message 399: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments How can I AVOID to receive recommendations of a particular author from GR?
I'm always receiving recs for Paulo Coelho's books (in the classic's category nothing less!) and I really hate it...

message 400: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments I don't know for sure, but have you tried blocking him? Go to his profile and at the very bottom of the page click on "block this member". You might need to email Goodreads for a solution if that doesn't work.
