Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments Are you on the app or the full site?

message 253: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Not a how do I do x but just wondering about notifications. For some reason I'm getting loads of notifications on people commenting on posts in multiple groups and I've not changed my settings. Just checked again and they are as I want them but shame gr isn't paying attention to this. Any ideas?

message 254: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments Notifications seems to be one of Goodread's main headaches. Maybe check over in Goodreads Feedback group. There always seems to be threads addressing notification problems.

message 255: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I see the same things, Sarah. Seems like things change after a few days - or not. I decided not to get crazy about it.

message 256: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Thanks guys. I'll see if I can tweak anything and head over to the feedback group.

message 257: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments I never had problems with the notifications, but I have problems with the updates form time to time when using the app.

message 258: by Peggy (new)

Peggy (pebbles84) | 15868 comments I'm sure it's me, but I'm looking for the thread where you can give suggestions for challenges and topplers, but I can't find it anywhere...

Tammy Burger (tammyburger) | 809 comments How do I join a toppler group?

message 262: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Hi Tammy,

If you're wanting to join one of the Toppler Teams, then let Jaxnsmom know on this thread (the sign up) https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/... and she'll assign you to a team.

This thread changes each toppler, but that's the address for June 2015.

Look forward to you joining us, particularly if you get assigned to Team B.

message 263: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Burger (tammyburger) | 809 comments Thanks

message 264: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments No worries!

Once you sign up, your team mates and all of us in general will be able to help with any specific questions regarding this Toppler in the Toppler threads. Enjoy!

Warning: Topplers may become addictive.

message 265: by Tammy (new)

Tammy Burger (tammyburger) | 809 comments The addiction could be a problem!

message 266: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments But it's a lovely problem to have.

message 267: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Hallo everybody!
I have been unable to instal the Goodreads app for smartphones in my Samsung Note.
I had a previous version from the app, but the actualization -insistently required from the app itself- didn't . I had to uninstall the app (it was VERY insistent) and wanted to reinstall it again, but to no avail.
I can download the program, but it won't let me install it.
Anybody has ideas about why that may happen?
(Sorry I was silent a while, but I was aboard and without internet)

message 268: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie Welcome back, Mariab!

Have you tried turning your phone all the way off/powering off? I've had issues with other apps and when I turn my phone (I have an iPhone) all the way off, the app tends to work after that :)

I have not, however, had an issue with re-installing an app :(

haks

Yes, I have tried that as well
Thanks for the prompt response, thought. And for the welcome

message 270: by Stephanie (new)

Stephanie You're welcome :) i hope it gets worked out for you soon :)

message 271: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments You might have to email support for assistance. Frustrating, isn't it?

message 272: by Tejas Janet (new)

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments Ugh. I've given up on getting Goodreads on my android phone. Mostly don't need it any way.

No idea why I can't get it. Mostly irrelevant with my access to my pc and tablet.

But sometimes it would be nice to have. Oh well.

message 273: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments I got it on my Galaxy 5 the other day no worries after my 3 blew up. Can't help, but just saying I had no issue.

message 274: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Which makes me feel like I'm rubbing it in your face, which I'm not. Just letting you know it worked for me on another samsung the other day.

message 275: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Is Ok. Russalka. No worries, I got it (not the app, of course).
It worked for me til aprox. Jun/July, and then no more

message 276: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments I' ll do that, Janice. Perhaps it will work something up

message 277: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments Tanks everybody!

message 278: by Dominique (new)

Dominique | 1126 comments I just have a question: Is there any chance that the Serial challenge will continue in 2016?

message 279: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments No, it won't. There will be a new year long challenge. I'll be posting it shortly, so be on the watch for it.

message 280: by Jannene (new)

Jannene | 3124 comments Dominique (Dom) wrote: "I just have a question: Is there any chance that the Serial challenge will continue in 2016?"

I was hoping for that too. I guess we will have to do personal goals and do it ourselves. Almeta put it on her page as "Perpetual Serial Killer".

message 281: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments It's funny how some of these challenges become perpetual challenges. Please do continue. Set up threads in the YLTO Member Zone and track your progress there.

message 282: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments I'll continue for sure since I'm into more series now than at the beginning of the year. Serial killers are not recoverable, anyway. :)

message 283: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments ROFL! Sandra - you can start our own topic called "Serial Killers are not Recoverable" to continue the spree. I will join you. No levels or points, just series currently reading and series killed.

message 284: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Nov 19, 2015 05:58AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments Good one!

ETA: I'll do it on January 1st.

I'd also like to join the perpetual-serial-killers-who-are-not-recoverable group.

message 287: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments lol, it seems we are we are a bunch!

message 288: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59981 comments You're going to need to move this discussion to a more appropriate thread. This thread is to ask questions about hoe to navigate Goodreads and do the various things on Goodreads. I'm thinking that YLTO member's section would be a good place to continue this discussion. Someone can set up a general thread and then you can all set up your own tracking threads.

message 289: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I set up a topic for us called Serial Killers are not Recoverable under the YLTO member section as Janice suggested.

message 290: by Susan (new)

Susan Guard | 695 comments How do I set up my thread/page/I-don't-know-what-to-call-it to participate in the 2016 year long challenge? I think a very kind mod did it for me for 2015 because I can't remember doing it myself.

message 291: by Lisa (last edited Dec 02, 2015 06:45AM) (new)

Lisa (lisathebooklover) | 9244 comments Susan, click on this this link https://www.goodreads.com/topic/group... and that will take you to the 'Discussion - Challenges- Year Long' page. In the top right hand corner, just above where it says 'last activity', you should see 'new topic'. Click on that and that will set up a new thread for you.

message 294: by Joan (new)

Joan Does any one know if the mobile app can be set to "display newest comments first" as the default?

message 295: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments Joan wrote: "Does any one know if the mobile app can be set to "display newest comments first" as the default?"

Not for android. You have to do it for every thread.

message 296: by Sandra, Moderator (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments yes, what Dawn said. The app for android is pretty limited.

message 297: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4540 comments I know how to add a link to a book or an author when I write a post, but could someone tell me how to link an entire series like "Cotton Malone"? I noticed that some members did it (Debra for example) and I can't figure out how to do it.

message 298: by Sandra, Moderator (last edited Dec 27, 2015 10:57AM) (new)

Sandra (sanlema) | 11279 comments Roz, as far as I know there is not a way to do that like with books and authors. What Debra probably did was using the html formating for make a link appear like a text. It appears in the "some html is ok" above the comment box, but just in case I'll try to explain it to you. Copy and paste this:

<*a href="LINK">TEXT*<*/*a>

Delete all the stars (I put them there so you can see the code), and note there's an space after the first a. Swap the LINK for the link to the series page (Ex: https://www.goodreads.com/search?utf8...) and the TEXT for the words you want to appear (Ex: Cotton Malone Series). You'll get this:

Cotton Malone Series

message 299: by Roz (new)

Roz | 4540 comments Thanks Sandra. I'll try it.

message 300: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments Nice one Sandra for explaining that. That's exactly how it's done Roz.
