That would be really fun, but I would definitely go insane very quickly :)

Alan | 1 comments I have been frustrated by this for years. If I return to one of my group's discussions, how do I start with only the newest messags I haven,t read yet?

message 203: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Are you on the app or on the webpage? If on the webpage, when you view the thread under the title of the thread (in this case "Welcome & Introductions > Goodreads 101 - How do I do [blank]") on the top right hand corner of the first message there is a link that says "newest". Click on that, and it should take you to this message.

If you're on the app, you should be able to hit your options/menu button and then you can tap "view newest comments first" or something similar, and that changes the order of the thread you are viewing.

Let me know how you go.

message 204: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Welcome Alans! Another option on the website is to click on "unread topics", a tiny little link you'll find top right hand corner of any discussion. That will show you a list of all the threads that have new messages. Happy navigating.

Tejas Janet (tejasjanet) | 3513 comments How do I get Goodreads to send me the emails and notifications that I'm signed up for?? I'm so perplexed by this. It's like Goodreads doesn't see that I'm following discussions.

I've tried resetting to default. Then tried manually selecting my preferences. But I'm only getting very limited hit-and-miss emails and notifications.

I think some others have noted problems along these lines. Thinking Rusalka and Almeta, maybe others.
So frustrating.

message 206: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments I am constantly frustrated with goodreads. I have groups set up with notifications, and it doesn't notify me. But none of my groups are set to receive emails ever, but my email is always full of goodreads spam.

I tried something the other day. Let you know if anything has worked.

You pack your comments between: "(view spoiler). You ´ll found these in the "(some html is ok)"

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Carolyn wrote: "How do I hide spoilers in my comments? Don't want to ruin someone's read"

You're on your phone using the app, aren't you Carolyn? I don't think you can. The app is very limited in functionality. In order to view and hide spoilers, you need the full web site.

message 212: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments You can put the spoilers into the comments using the app, if you know how to use the < >s and >s to type them, but, no you cannot read them. There were no spoilers here, just examples. The word "spoiler" (without the quote marks) goes in between the brackets. ;)

message 213: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Darn, that didn't work. Sorry. Like Janice said, you have to be able to see the HTML hint.

message 214: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments I didn't realize you could use the coding on the app.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Janice wrote: "I didn't realize you could use the coding on the app."

yep! I can write them, but I can't read them,
I can write a comment, but I cannot reply to one, and I cannot edit a comment on the app. Looking at pictures is kind of tricky on my iPod. I have to turn it sideways.

message 216: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Elizabeth | 95 comments I have a few questions since I'm new to this group and a complete novice on GR.

1. Is it possible to add the book and author hyperlinks from an iPad or iPhone? I seem to only be able to do this from an actual computer.

2. Also, after starting a challenge and then attempting to put my comment to total my points on my computer I realized the novel had to appear in its own shelf for that specific challenge. Is that also only possible on a computer? Should I have a separate shelf for each challenge?

Sorry for silly questions, but using this primarily from on-the-go devices has left me stumped. :)

message 217: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments I do not see any responses yet, so I will try to answer your questions, Jessica.

1. No. Only from the computer. The add book/author link is not on the iPod/iPad/iPhone app. The other thing about the mobile app is that you will not be able to view spoilers in messages, and you cannot edit comments - just incase you haven't discovered that yet.

2. You do not have to use the shelf link for the challenges. I used to do it, but found that it was not necessary and added more shelves than I wanted. However, that said, I did keep a few and add books there, just for my benefit. I usually only do it for the yearly challenges.

It takes a little getting used to the mobile apps. I do not especially like the new format for the mobile app for iPod/iPad, but it is better than the android one by far. I know because I have a Samsung Tablet and I actually deleted the mobile app and if I use my tablet, I log-into the PC app.

I hope I have helped.

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Re: #2... If you use the challenge widget, which is on the main group page when using the computer (not sure about the apps), you need to specify a shelf. I use the same shelf every month, ylto-monthly-challenge. The widget looks at the dates of the challenge, and the read date of the completed book. Right now, my December challenge says 0 read, even though I have 32 books on that shelf. (Wow! 32 months - that's almost 3 years).

Using the widget is totally voluntary. I don't even look at it when determining people's results. You must score your completed book and report it in the reporting thread set up specifically for that purpose. You will find it in the Challenge folder.

huh, I never thought of using the same shelf name. Good grief! I just hated removing the books from the shelf once they were done.

32 means that you have done every challenge in the last three years but 4. How about that for a statistic? By the way, I was going to ask you something. Do you enter your audio books with the actual audio book version on GR? I did and it really messes up the page numbers for the books read. I was going to go back and change them, but haven't done it yet.

message 220: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Dec 11, 2014 10:30PM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Yes, I do enter my audiobooks under the proper format if it's available. You're right, it does mess up the page numbers. When I looked at my stats for 2014, my pages read was very low. I had to calculate it manually.

One of the things that I do when I add the book to my shelf is I search the book via Goodread's search which gives me the most popular edition. I take the page numbers from that and include it with the duration of the audiobook in my private notes. That way, when I'm doing challenges, I've got easy access to page numbers. And I have easy access to the duration of the book in case I want a short one for a toppler.

So, my private notes could look like:
10:35 (for 10 hrs, 35 min)
345 pages

message 221: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments That makes sense, Janice. I can calculate the pages for all of my books read this year because I tracked them on a list that I created for the Chunkster Challenge at the end of 2013 when I was gophering for all of the books I owned. It is hard work to keep it up, but I am glad I did. Unfortunately, I did not write down all the library books I read or listened to that were not part of a challenge or group read. Not many, but a few here and there. Not enough time to read many extras that I could not use as a challenge or group read book, but I managed a few.

message 222: by Sarah (new)

Sarah | 18550 comments I tend to use the first book which shows up in a search for the audiobook to keep the page count but I have a shelf that I put all the books which were audiobooks on so that I know which ones I listened to and which ones I didn't. I also tend to make a point of listing in my review if I listened to audio.

message 223: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Jessica, if you access GoodReads from the web browser on your iphone or ipad, you should be able to add hyperlinks. I can. I'm on my iphone now and have the option to add a hyperlink. See: Wuthering Heights

message 224: by Lilisa (new)

Lilisa | 2770 comments Jessica - I use the web browser as well since the app is so limiting. I saved the Goodreads site on my home screen so I can get to it quickly - much more user friendly than the app.

message 225: by Jessica (new)

Jessica Elizabeth | 95 comments Thank you, all! I will definitely save the actual web page instead of always using the app. I really appreciate the responses :)

message 226: by Cherie (new)

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments LOL! Thanks for all of the help, but my tablet says " The Menu key has been replaced by the Recent key. " Help is no help for the Goodreads app. Also - no three dots in the corner. No arrow at the top right, like the iPod. Each thread or topic tells me how many new comments, how many total comments, and when the last comment was made. I have to scroll through each list, 50 at a time to get to the end to see the newest ones.

The only thing I can say that I like is the way the Updates are displayed but - I just noticed, there is no "LIKE" button, but some things allow a comment, and I can share a review, but no "like" for status updates. Only a comment button. Oh, well, I'm done with it tonight.

Above the comment box, click on (some html is ok), and it will tell you how to bold, strikeout, and a number of other things.

Cherie (crobins0) | 21536 comments Hi Michelle,
If you are in a mobile app, you cannot see the "(some html is okay) link above the comment box. I copied some of it and pasted it here. Remove the " "s from the examples. I had to add them so that you could see them else you get: bold text: ...

•bold text: <"b">...<"/b">
•italic text: <"i">...<"/i">
•underline text: <"u">...<"/u">
•strike text: <"s">...<"/s">
•exact spacing: <"pre">...<"/pre">
•blockquote: <"blockquote">...<"/blockquote">
•paragraph: <"p">...<"/p">
•spoiler: <"spoiler">...<"/spoiler">

Hope this helps. = <"b">Hope this helps.<"/b">
Hope this helps. = <"i">Hope this helps.<"/i">
Hope this helps. = <"u">Hope this helps.<"/u">

Note: If you are in a mobile app, you will not be able to read what is between the spoilers, but you can write them.

I am not 100% sure, Berit, but you should be able to point your website to the same account that you have your app going to. Your user name and account should be the same on both.

message 236: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments The only way you could have separate accounts is if you have separate email addresses. Like Cherie said, you should be able to log onto the full site using the same account that you use for your app. If you still have problems, you might want to contact support.

message 237: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments Thank you ladies for your advice :-) I only have one email address so I have no idea what I did. I will try to contact support :-) good night

message 238: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Berit, when you try to log in, you put your email address, and then put what you think your password is, and if it's wrong, you can click on 'retrieve password' or 'need help logging in' or something like that and click to be emailed a link to reset it. It should be straightforward if you know which email address you've used.

message 239: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments What do you mean by it being a different account on the website? Do you have a different user name on the website? Are you not Berit there?

message 240: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments No I have the same name but there were no books and no groups and such

message 243: by Berit (new)

Berit | 641 comments No, it had my shelves as completely empty:-) I think I somehow have two accounts, but you found me because that book was on my TBR :-)I think it's the Amazon thing I saw something about that on the app update, I'll let you know if I ever figure it out!

message 244: by Gail (new)

Gail (appleshoelace) | 779 comments Ah, if you're using your amazon account on the app, you can probably log into the website using your amazon account too.

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments In the comment box, just type "Reserved" and then post. Do this as much as you want.

Then when you want to fill in the details, just go to the message, click "edit" which is on the bottom right hand side of the comment (next to reply and delete). Then you can edit the comment, delete the word reserved and put in your info.
