Can anyone tell me if you link your Amazon sign- in to your GR account is there any way to import my entire list of books from Amazon( manage my Kindle page ) onto my GR book page or do you have to do it one book at a time ?
Thank you .

Michelle T. (chely1217) | 148 comments Hey guys, is it 1:55 am on Tuesday February 11th... and I have a question:
How do you guys load pics on your messages? Like when you are giving a badge... as hard as I try I can't figure it out.
Can sleep, catching up on the reading. Hope everyone have a great day!!! =》 ♡♥

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Hi Michelle, I'm cooking dinner at the moment so really quickly. Look at message 75 onwards in this thread where we helped someone with the same question a while ago.

I'll be back soon so feel free to hit us up with more questions/clarifications.

message 155: by Michelle T. (new)

Michelle T. (chely1217) | 148 comments Thanks Rusalka!!!

message 156: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments No worries. Hope that helped!

message 157: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments On the book's review page you should be able to in the "more options" section enter in "Who recommended it to me". It autofills goodreads friends (which is fricking annoying if someone isn't on goodreads and you have a friend with a similar name who is). You may want to think about a specific shelf of goodreads recs.

Is this along the lines of what you are after?

message 158: by Marnie (new)

Marnie (marnie19) | 3263 comments Thank you Rusalka. I deleted the question because I didn't think it made sense but your answer overlapped my deleting it. Thank you for deciphering and answering my question.

Which was. How can I mark a book that someone recommended so that when I read it I remember who suggested it?

message 159: by Kim (new)

Kim Williamson Do most of the comment features not work on the iPhone app? I am having a devil of a time trying to figure all this out.

message 160: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Apps seem to have huge limitations. I have heard people whinge about the i products apps, and I know the android apps have limitations too. I would use the website if you can while on these products if you want to do more than text comments. We have whinging about this to goodreads for years... you think they could hire an app developer in that time.

message 161: by Kim (new)

Kim Williamson Thanks Rusalka, I don't have Internet service at home so I guess I will just have to stick to commenting for now. Can I still participate in the challenges?

message 162: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments of course. When I travel and such, I just ask mods to link for me in desperate times. We don't like doing it all the time, and posting links aren't necessary for challenges, but we are always happy to help. I would recommend posting and browsing in the app, then going and modifying the comments once in a webpage from your phone to add links to the books, so we can steals them.

message 163: by Jkmays (new)

Jkmays I know I asked this question a few months back on another thread, but cannot remember where...so If I ask here, I will remember where to come...

How do you do set up a spoiler?

I tried to look on goodreads in general. It seems that they would have these general instructions somewhere, but I don't know how to find them. Understand of course that I am the opposite of a techie. :)

message 164: by Casceil (last edited Mar 29, 2014 03:15PM) (new)

Casceil | 2728 comments Before the spoiler, you put in < spoiler > (but without the spaces). At the end of the spoiler, you put in < /spoiler > (but without the spaces). If you forget, look just above the comment box and find the green link that says "some html is ok." That will explain how to do a number of things, including spoilers, italics and underlining.

message 165: by Michelle T. (new)

Michelle T. (chely1217) | 148 comments You know I'm still having problems posting pictures... and I know that I follow the instructions the Rusalka told me the last time, but still it doesn't work...
Does anyone have another way??? :p

message 166: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments I upload the pictures into my free account at photobucket.com, then copy the html code they provide for sharing. I then paste the copied code into a comment box.

message 167: by [deleted user] (new)

This isn't directly related to how -to do something, but I thought maybe someone in here could give me the answer to this one. Can you tell me how long this group has been going, and also how many past badge opportunities there have been ? I like looking through everyone's Badge pages . There are some really neat ones that sound like they would have been lots of fun !
Also, has anyone completed every single badge so far ?
Thanks -

message 168: by Janice, Moderator (last edited Mar 30, 2014 08:30AM) (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Aha! Someone who loves stats. :)

I took over the group sometime in 2010. I'm not sure when the group was started. Jenny started the group and if she's kicking around and catches this discussion, she may respond. We started doing challenges in May or June 2011. The very first challenge winner received a homemade bookmark (made by yours truly). It was shortly after that, one of our former moderators, Judy, came up with the idea of awarding badges. The first challenge badge was posted for the July/August 2011 challenge. Since then, we started doing badges for group reads and topplers.

I'm not sure if anyone has received all the badges. I've probably come close since I've been around since we started them, and as main moderator, I try to participate as much as possible.

message 169: by [deleted user] (new)

Thanks Janice
That's interesting to hear how long the badges have been awarded, who has done the most, etc .
It must take a lot of imagination to come up with the new ideas for so many different ones .
I'll have to wander through all the badge awards pages again to take a look at more of them.
Great job on completing so many !

message 170: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Thanks. The badges have taken on a life of their own. Everyone seems to really enjoy them. Hopefully you'll be earning them soon!

message 171: by [deleted user] (new)

Yes, I'd like to try at least one of the April things-- I have one of the April Group books (Affinity) , and the library challenge ,plus the April Toppler sound fun . Lots of choices !

message 172: by Ann (new)

Ann (ann7258) | 334 comments I marvel at how you moderators manage to come up with the challenge ideas, keep track of and answer all the questions, award badges to all the participants AND still take part in the challenges, often leading the results! I don't know how you do it! Thanks for keeping us all organized!

message 173: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments That's why we have a number of moderators. We share the work.

Besides, right now the only one demanding my attention is my cat. As long as I give her my lap every now and again, she's happy. :)

message 174: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments I looked at the members list and Jenny joined the group October 1, 2007 so I assume that is when the group started as she was the creator.

message 175: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments That makes sense, Dawn. Thanks for checking that out.

Aubrey (madamebo) | 13 comments Sorry, this is my first book club on GR. If I read one of the monthly books, My Cousin Rachel or The Bonesetter's Daughter, does that go towards a challenge, or is it simply to engage in discussion? Thanks for helping the newbie!

Hello Aubrey. The monthly reads can be used in the challenges if they fit. These titles do not work for the monthly challenge for May tough.

You do get a badge on your wall for participating in the monthly theme, so join the discussion.

Thanks Esther!

message 180: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments No worries Aubrey. Challenges are different to the Monthly Group Reads. No, the Group Reads don't count automatically for challenges. However, if you can sometimes cross over reads, and sometimes the group reads will meet the challenge criteria. But usually the Group Theme Reads are to read book together and to chat about them. Clear as mud?

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Colleen wrote: "How do I start a topic

Colleen"

First thing is to check to see if there is already a topic for whatever you want to address. If there is nothing, chose the appropriate folder. If you are wanting to start a buddy read, you will want the Buddy Read folder.

At the top of the folder there is a link that says "new topic". Click on it and follow the instructions.

promoting my books. Like how to do a cover reveal?

It looks like you figured out how to link via cover. Sorry, but I had to delete it because this group is really strict about authors joining the group to promote their books. We ask that authors be active members of the group by participating in discussions, challenges, buddy reads, topplers, etc. As people get to know you, they're going to want to read your books because they enjoy your participation.

message 185: by Elsbeth (new)

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments I've read something for the groupread-theme and finished the 'mammal'-challenge, so that will mean I will get my own wall (with badges)? Does someone of the moderators make it? Will that be done after the period (so in this case: may) or during?

message 186: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Amy should be posting the April group read badges soon and she will set up a wall for you. Rusalka will post your mammal challenge badge after the challenge is complete, so be looking for it in early June.

Elsbeth (elsbethgm) | 1152 comments Okay, thanks!
I'm looking forward to it! This is fun!

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Sara wrote: "Okay, I have a list of questions after exploring the group:"

1. I don't think you can link to a book using the app. I avoid the app as much as possible. Someone else may more information on this.

2. Each challenge will have a reporting thread for that purpose.

3. Each member who has completed a challenge, group read, or toppler event will have their own thread created in the folder "Wall of Fame". Badges are posted to that wall to commemorate your achievement. Think back to school when the teacher gave you stars for different things.

Jan Nichols (jannichols) | 6 comments OK I'm really new to all this technology and can't for the life of me figure out what is meant by certain things, will start with TBR (to be read?) Toppler what is this?

message 190: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments TBR - to be read
Toppler - read-a-thon (supposedly will topple your TBR)

message 191: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments But what really happens in a Toppler is you see all the good books others are reading and add to your TBR instead of toppling it!! :)

message 192: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments Yes, you topple your pile because you add so many books to it that it can't hold the weight, not that you reduce the pile by reading a bunch of boks.

message 193: by jaxnsmom (new)

jaxnsmom | 8341 comments Jan, a Toppler is a read-a-thon with tasks. We've had one where you had to read certain genres, and for the one we just finished, the books had to relate to certain life events.

message 194: by Dawn (new)

Dawn (caveatlector) | 1793 comments I think one every month might just drive j'mom insane!

I believe it's every 2 months and it alternates between a 1 day toppler and a 1 week toppler. I'm sure someone will confirm this....

message 195: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments Hi Sara. We have a Toppler ever two months, and they switch between 24 hours and a week in length. We just finished the June one last weekend, so the next one will be a 24 hour long one in August (date tbc).

Keep an eye on the threads, Topplers generate so much discussion before they start as well as while they are happening, they are hard to miss.

message 196: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments No worries! We do have slang and terms that are special to this group that we forget we have.

Just feel free to ask at any time, as we have all been in your exact same position and are all happy to help :D

message 197: by Janice, Moderator (new)

Janice (jamasc) | 59984 comments We also have this thread that has a few YLTO terms peppered in amongst other interesting words we've stumbled across. See msg 2 & 3 for an alphabetic listing.

message 198: by Mariab (new)

Mariab | 3059 comments No. The next is in August

message 199: by Rusalka, Moderator (new)

Rusalka (rusalkii) | 19214 comments The Year Long Challenge has it's own folder which you may not have gotten to yet.

The easy answer is the sections are like milestones for the year. However I would go and read the Main Post here https://www.goodreads.com/topic/show/...

That's where Janice explained the challenge, and where we have been asking her questions about it for the last 6 months. I would recommend having a read of this and then let us know if you have any other questions.
