What YA Friendly Book Are You Currently Reading?
I'm currently reading Everything Leads to You. So far, I'm really enjoying it.I'm also reading The Hidden Oracle. Supposedly, it takes place after Blood of Olympus, but I haven't read that one yet. It's still sitting on my Kindle waiting. I really hope there are no huge spoilers that will mess me up.

i haven't read the hidden oracle (yet) but i don't know if i'd risk reading it before the blood of olympus, i've heard there are spoilers (though i'm not sure how big).

Dang it. Maybe that one will have to go on hold for a bit while I finally get to Blood of Olympus. Thanks for the heads up!

I'm starting Love for the Cold-Blooded, or The Part-Time Evil Minion's Guide to Accidentally Dating a Superhero.
Linda ~ chock full of hoot, just a little bit of nanny ~ wrote: "I'm starting Love for the Cold-Blooded, or The Part-Time Evil Minion's Guide to Accidentally Dating a Superhero."Despite the title, I think there's sex in this one. (I loved it, warm and funny and surprisingly real characters for a definitely comic-book world, but I can't remember if it's YA . You'll have to let us know.)
I just finished Pukawiss The Outcast for our buddy read, and because the ending is a bit uncertain I also read A Scout is Brave - I liked the first book more, the second is a bit clicheed, but both hit 4 stars for me.

Will do. :)
Recently finished Pukawiss The Outcast as well. I really enjoyed that one. Going to start the other buddy read, Spy Stuff, soon.I've heard great things about None of the Above from three different groups no less, so I added that one to my tbr.

Finally starting Symptoms of Being Human. I picked it up at the bookstore last month. Am totally loving it so far!

That would be cool!
I just finished Symptoms of Being Human and it was awesome!! I absolutely loved it!! And I want to fangirl squeal about it and make everyone read it. lol!
I just finished the audiobook edition of Boy Meets Boy by David Levithan. I really enjoyed it as just a light, feel-good teen romance.BUT, has anyone else read this book and been confused about Infinite Darlene? I liked her a lot and throughout the book read her as clearly a trans girl, but then right near the end they suddenly refer to her as a drag queen! And that's how all the summaries and reviews talk about her too. She dresses femme every day, is the homecoming queen, and uses female pronouns, being referred to as her old name only by mean people. So hearing her referred to as a drag queen/cross dresser was very uncomfortable.

Part of it may be the age of the book - written almost 15 years ago - language and understanding of gender has evolved fairly rapidly, even in the non-trans LGB community. It looks to me, reading other older material, as if it was pretty common to conflate trans with drag. The idea that she could play football regularly and still be trans, not bigender or doing drag, is perhaps one was still evolving.

I agree with Kaje, and I've read the book, too. 15 yrs ago. Being trans* was something one "decided" as an adult not as a teen. They'd say oh it's a phase...I know there were no (out/transitioning) trans* kids I knew of in my high school which was 10 yrs ago, and we had over 4,000 students! And now my old high school has a young man whose famous in our city and probably other places for fighting for the right to use the men's room, after getting expelled for using a boy's room during some sort of event where he was far from the nurses gender-neutral bathroom. Got it taken off his record because he had a spotless one. Also, he ran for prom king, which again he had to fight for.
I'm reading the Gives Light series - very lovely writing and characters I like a lot, a range of Native American justice issues but fit into a sweet and low key coming of age and romance. After books 1 and 2, I've gone to 5 on the advice of someone who finished - interweaving the MC points of view.I thought I was fairly well informed about ongoing injustices toward Native Americans in this country, but these books are pointing me at others I did not know about :(

Good points. I looked at the publication date at one point (because suddenly I remembered the whole gay characters dying trend in the early days of the genre and got scared), but I'm one of those people who still thinks of the 90s as being about 10 years ago. So 2003 seemed like a new book. :P Sadly, even now a lot of people would question a trans woman who also plays football. In my opinion she's awesome!
I am reading A Love That Disturbs and it is brilliant. I've never read a book about a Muslim lesbian before.
CR wrote: "I am reading A Love That Disturbs and it is brilliant. I've never read a book about a Muslim lesbian before."It's definitely going to my TBR!!!
Darby wrote: "Afterworlds by Scott Westerfeld (the guy who did Uglies and Pretties). It's LGBT!"oh wow, i didn't realize he was writing new stuff!!! the uglies series was one of my favorites as a kid.
i'm....kind of reading the scorpion rules by erin bow. it's on-and-off, half because of work and half because it's not quit hooking me yet.
Just finished the last book in the Rainbow Trilogy by Alex Sanchez. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other two but still a worthwhile read
Honestly, I totally blanked on Scot Westerfeld when I was picking up the book. I read all the Uglies in middle school, and loved them. I picked it up because I thought the spine was pretty XD
Carrie-Anne wrote: "Just finished the last book in the Rainbow Trilogy by Alex Sanchez. I didn't enjoy it as much as the other two but still a worthwhile read"I thought the same - rounded things off, but the first two were better. I wish he'd do Jeremy's book, but by now I guess that's unlikely.
Still working through the "Gives Light" series - as you get into the books from Rafael's POV, there's a stronger mystical/paranormal component to them. The degree to which the Shoshone in the books (and their ancestors) are victims of the white power structure hurts my heart though - I looked up some of the quoted laws, and we in America should all be deeply ashamed of being part of that. I hope that Black Lives Matter will end up shining a brighter light on all racial injustice here.
I'm almost finished with We Are the Ants on audio. So interesting! I'm really enjoying this one.I started If I Was Your Girl on kindle. It'll be interesting to see how it compares to Almost Perfect since their storylines are similar.
I have two that I'm working on simultaneously (ADD can be a gift sometimes). Listening to Will Grayson, Will Grayson on audiobook while reading The Art of Being Normal. (why didn't anyone tell me I could do this trick before... two books, one sitting... )
Rez: honestly I think I'd explode. It's like those people in ye olden times who could write in English with one hand and Latin with the other at the same time
I always have at least one in audio and one or two on my kindle that I'm reading. Lol! I usually only listen in the car to and from work so it takes me a while to get through audiobooks.
all of siera maley's books are ya friendly, and really well written, so i'd def recommend those!!i just read "about a girl" by joanne horniman though, and that definitely takes the cake. it's not only my fav lgbt book, it's one of my fav books of all time. i love the dreamy writing style.
None! I need to find some, that's why I'm here! Though I did recently finish a YA glbt friendly manga,
the cover seems a bit risque but the story really doesn't go much beyond kissing
I'm going to start one of our two book of the month reads - flipping a coin... Symptoms of Being Human it is...
I'm currently reading:
]. In the future of earth, the rich have "Proxies" who pay the debts of their "patrons". Depending on the felony, a Proxy could be beaten to death, in the case of Syd, a gay Proxy, who's patron, Knox, commited manslaughter, you could do hard labor for decades. I haven't finished this book yet, but I love it already, it's pretty clear that Syd and Knox may end up together, even though they're on the run from the secret police.

I've heard good things about "Proxy"I just picked up The Suicidal Peanut by Matthew J. Metzger because I have loved every other book I've read by him. This sounds a bit lighter - time to see how he does with that, since the touches of humor in his other books were good. I think I'll set up a Buddy read, in case anyone else who enjoyed "Spy Stuff" wants to join in. I have a couple ahead of this one in adult reads.
