Rainbowheart | 719 comments Read The Infinite Moment of Us by Lauren Myracle. This is YA, but there is no LGBT content. And it's filled with sexism and slut shaming and is totally anti-feminist, so I would not recommend it to anyone!

Rainbowheart | 719 comments Did you like it, Grace? I read it last year and thought it was really interesting but I've always been in love with Francesca Lia Block's style. Looking forward to The Island of Excess Love which is coming out this year.

Micah (sinvega) | 16 comments The last 2 YA friendly books i read were
The Sowing (The Torch Keeper, #2) by Steven dos Santos and Darkbound (Legacy of Moonset, #2) by Scott Tracey

Both 5 star reads with amazing Gay Males as their leads.

message 556: by Rainbowheart (new)

Rainbowheart | 719 comments Cool, I'm glad to hear Darkbound has a gay MC. I couldn't quite tell from the summary.

Kaje Harper | 17393 comments I just read our book of the month - Freakboy Freakboy by Kristin Elizabeth Clark . My review is here. I really was pulled into this story. At first, I was worried about the structure, with lots of very short chapters, and the text placed on the page in short spaced-out lines, like poetry. But really, it reads as smoothly as many novels, and is a compelling look at genderqueer issues, particularly for the kid who comes to the realization late, as more than half the kids I know did. Well worth the read.

Cynthia (cynthiaso) | 3 comments I just finished reading The Beast of Callaire and reviewed it for my book blog here. I really wanted to like it, since it's a fantasy YA book which features a PoC lesbian protag (and her love interest is a bisexual girl), and the blurb sounded really cool (the protag turns into a manticore every full moon!) but unfortunately I just didn't enjoy it. The pace was too slow and the romance wasn't very well-done. I'd love to hear other people's opinion of it though, and it's the kind of book I so wish was a good book that I really want to talk about it anyway despite not liking it myself.

Isn't that one excellent? It doesn't move fast but the writing is so good, so smooth, and the journey of growing up for the boys is beautiful.

I liked that. Another book we had as a book of the month. It's a little utopianesque, which some folks like more than others. But he has the best use of language, the exquisite right phrase, of any author I know.

Esteban (hellfiremouse) I've been reading With or whithout you by Brian Farrey, and I found this words that I never heard before: Bugchasing. I did a little research and I discovered what it means: "is a slang term for the practice of pursuing sexual intercourse with HIV-infected individuals in order to contract HIV. Individuals engaged in this activity are referred to as bugchasers. It is a form of self-harm" I am shock, I can't believe it. In my country HIV and even AIDS is not a real clinical problem,we have a lot of tropical diseases to worry about, but is unveliable that people really think that have AIDS is a gift. I do not what to think about i... I like to hear your opinion. At least for I know in USA there is more HIV's researchs.

Sorry for my grammar and possible misunderstandings.

Hi Esteban, I've never self harmed and can only imagine the inner pain someone must be in to do it to that extreme. A lot of the ways people self harm/self mutilate can be shocking. I have heard of people wanting to contract HIV but I've not heard it called Bugchasing before. Is it a good book?

Hi. I'm still half way to the end, but for the moment is a good book. I read that people are bugchaser because a political reason. Like a way to show the gay pride and liberetation. They say that if you want to be a real male homosexual you need to have HIV, its like a mark of proud for who you are....

Its crazy and insane.

message 571: by Kaje (last edited Jun 17, 2014 01:35PM) (new)

Kaje Harper | 17393 comments There are a lot of additional reasons for some gay men to be bugchasing (which I agree, is crazy.) Sometimes there is a degree of self-harm in it. Some of it is a perception that the straight world uses HIV as a way of discriminating, and that if all gay men were positive, there would be more unity.

Some people think if they have HIV then they won't have to worry all the time and take precautions any more (without realizing that now you'll worry about all kinds of other stuff even more, and now the precautions will be for your partners.) Some want to bareback, and figure once they're positive they can bareback with other pos guys without concern. (wrong, for various reasons, but it is done.) Some are in discordant relationships and they want to take the strain off the relationship by both being positive. (until you both get sick or have drug reactions...)

Some think that the more people are positive, the more political weight they will carry. They have the impression that a cure hasn't been found partly because not enough people care. Which may be true, but not a reason to deliberately pick up a chronic, potentially fatal disease.

There's a also lot of perception of HIV as a minor thing now, pop a few meds and you're fine. Especially in the generation that didn't live through the eighties and nineties. The fact that the meds can have nasty side effects, that they don't always work, that they control your life to a degree is disregarded.

Esteban (hellfiremouse) All this day I've seen movies and documentaries about crisis of the eighties (The Normal Heart, How to survive a plague, Milk, etc.) I work with drugs and vaccine design and I want to impulse a proposal in my laboratory about HIV. Just reading "With or without you" I hear about bugchasing, I still cant believe, its just... well, this is a crazy world I suppose.

thanks Kaje for the information :D

message 574: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17393 comments It is and the way people deal with pressure isn't always safe or reasonable. I can almost understand someone trying to turn HIV from this looming death threat that they feel stalking them every time they have sex to either a positive symbol or something familiar and a done deal. Doesn't make it smart, but people do lots of crazy things in trying to live their lives.

message 575: by Suki (new)

Suki Fleet (sukifleet) | 45 comments I've read a lot of books that deal with the 80's/90's and the impact of AIDS but I feel kinda ignorant to this new perception of HIV. I've definitely got some reading around to do.
(this bugchasing thread has given me a story idea--though not directly to do with HIV--inspiration is everywhere)

message 576: by Kaje (new)

Kaje Harper | 17393 comments It is interesting (and sometimes scary) to research things like that. I was reading one gay pos man's blog where he was saying that it was not unusual for guys to want to bareback even after he told them his status, although one time he gave in, the guy got mad at him later.

And inspiration can definitely be anywhere :D Good luck with the new idea.

I'm not gay, but really, the orientation doesn't matter in this situation. What scares the living hell out of me is people who are HIV-positive to have unprotected sex knowing full well they could be transmitting the virus to their partner(s). It's one thing to be fearless. It's quite another to be stupid and when you think about it, having sex while carrying the virus and knowing you have it and STILL having sex can be considered downright criminal. Even if the other person consents, it may not be a criminal act in and of itself, but it's madness all the same.

I did, a couple of months back. It was decent enough, but the characters for me weren't very likeable. It was a good portrait of alienation, though, and that's what got my attention. William's style of writing, though, is quite good, IMHO.

I haven't heard of that one - Girl Walking Backwards by Bett Williams ; it looks interesting but maybe a bit tough, with the cutting and mental health issues. I'll be interested to hear what you think of it.

message 586: by Tosei (new)

Tosei Thank you for your replies! What I found most intriguing about this book when I first picked it up was how it is described as an "anti-coming-of-age novel" in the description. I'm eager to find out what kinds of anti-coming-of-age themes and ideas will be presented throughout the story.

I'm still hoping (since 2007 or so) for a sequel to Vintage: A Ghost Story

Ulysses Dietz | 36 comments Alex Sanchez is a very special writer. "God Box" was the one that blew me away, because it deals with religion and faith. But the Rainbow Boys series is great (and on one of the early covers, Matt Bomer is one of the models).
