I wanted to share with you all an online resource called cookbooker.com that I use to keep track of individual recipes within cookbooks. You are able to index any or all recipes from the cookbooks, magazines, websites that you use and rate and review them individually. I like it because it helps to keep me organized and I can see at a glance which recipes I’ve tried from any particular cookbook I own. I can also note any substitutions or changes I make to recipes at the bottom of the review in the private notes section.

If any of you decide to check it out, my username is leeka. Once you add the cookbooks you own to your profile, you can see all the other users who own the same book so you should be able to find me easily. After I review/rate recipes there I always share my results here too!

I thought you might like it! They often do cookbook challenges but of course of more mainstream omni books. I just challenge myself to cook a certain number of recipes from each book because I like to.

message 4: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Thanks, Lee! It does sound like a wonderful site. I can think of a few other specific members here who are likely to love it. I might check it out when I have some time.

message 5: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Okay, I don't know if I'll use it but I snagged LisaVegan. Thanks again, Lee.

message 6: by Lindsey (new)

Lindsey (_lindsey_) | 42 comments Wow! This is exactly the kind of site that I need! I just joined, and I'm Lindsey on there.

Thanks for sharing, Lee!

Yay! I'm so happy! The developer of the site is very responsive to ideas and suggestions for improvement. I love having specific reviews of recipes within the books.

message 8: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Lee, You're one of the top 30 members there! You showed up on that list.

Lee, Selah, Lindsey, I added you all to my favorite members list.

I'll try to add all my cookbooks but exporting/importing won't work that well for me since I have a fair number of cookbooks that don't have ISBNs. I might use the feature though since manually entering them all would be a lot of work.

Yes, I use it a lot. It will be more useful the more recipe reviews there are for each book so I try and write a little something or at least give a star rating for everything I've made in the last year.

Except for Goodreads, I review only local restaurants (and they're blurbs/400 maximum characters) for a local veg*n group/forum. I've rated a ton of things for Netflix. If I start cooking from cookbooks, I guess I will use this site; it looks great. I'll take a look at "favorite members" reviews when I can.

Jayme (jayme-reads) I just signed up as Jayme. This is a great resource, thanks for sharing it, Lee!

Your welcome! It will be great to have more vegans cooking from the books there! I'll look for you and add you to my favourite users.

Whatever works for you Lisa! Even the star ratings can be helpful for me in deciding what recipes to try.

Okay.

Jayme, I'll add you if I can find you. ;-) ETA: Found you.

message 15: by Selah (new)

Selah (selahwrites) | 113 comments The next step for me is to list the recipes from the challenge cookbook I've selected, The Indian Slow Cooker: 50 Healthy, Easy, Authentic Recipes

I've totally become immersed in this book. She mentions how easily some of the meat recipes can have seitan substituted, and even mentions subbing tofu for the paneer in palak paneer!

My masala dabba will likely get plenty of use this week.

message 16: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Well, they won't let me import my books via an export from Goodreads, no matter how I do it.

Were any of you able to import books from Goodreads?

Eventually, I hope to manually add my many cookbooks to the site.

Thanks again, Lee, for letting us know about this site! I didn't realize how active you (and Selah and some others) are there.

I think it's great to have so many vegan recipes reviewed and rated at a site that isn't a strictly veg*n site.

Lisa, I'll ask Andrew (the site creator) if you can do that or what the problem is. Maybe he can help. I know you have hundreds of cookbooks and it would be difficult to add them all manually.

Thanks, Lee.

I've tried importing my entire books, books from just a couple shelves, including cookbooks (but they say not to edit .csv files) and I tried to created another Goodreads' account so that I could import my books, delete all but the cookbooks and other books with vegan recipes, but that didn't work so well either, but the latter seemed to be a Goodreads problem, or mine. I might have to manually add the books because a few of my cookbooks don't have ISBNs.

But, thanks in advance for asking & for letting me know anything you find out.

Okay, I'lll let you know what he says.

message 20: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) So, some of my cookbooks (and maybe a few wrong books) got imported.

I can't find the path to find the list of people I've listed as "favorites" or whatever they call them there.

And, so far I've just voted for one review as useful, but I'll try to read some of the reviews of members here, and any others I find, and vote for t hem too if I find them useful.

If you don't see votes, chances are I haven't gotten to this project yet. (I'm on overload right now!!!)

Lisa, if you go to the tab labeled "my bookshelf" and look at the red tabs on that page, you will find another set of tabs one of which is labeled "favourite users".

Thanks, Lee. I'd found it, lost it, now this time hopefully I'll remember.

I'll take some time soon to read some of your reviews and Selah's. When/if Lindsey and Jayme write any, I'll try to check those too, as well as members' reviews of vegan recipes even if I don't know them.

Okey dokey!

message 24: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I think I have some time to right and read a few recipes today! I've been looking forward to spending time on the site all week.

100's of cookbooks, Lisa? I'm super jealous!

message 25: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jayme,

Well, I've been collecting vegetarian cookbooks since 1976-1977 and vegan cookbooks since 1988, and many of my read cookbooks I've borrowed from the library or from friends.

I'll look out for your reviews, though probably not for several days.

message 26: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) That's very cool! You have a major head start, but with any luck and maybe a winning a lottery ticket, I will catch up someday.

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jayme wrote: "That's very cool! You have a major head start, but with any luck and maybe a winning a lottery ticket, I will catch up someday."

Jayme, Try the library! And, there are literally thousands of free vegan recipes on websites and blogs. So, you might not need to win the lottery. ;-)

message 28: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) So true, but don't you just love staring at them on your bookshelf? Drool.

message 29: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Jayme wrote: "So true, but don't you just love staring at them on your bookshelf? Drool."

Well, yes, I do enjoy my book collection. But, between VegNews magazine (http://www.vegnews.com/web/home.do) the web, library and friends' books, I could do fine without all my cookbooks. They are nice to have though. I hope you collect a bunch over the years. More are coming out every year, many more!

message 30: by Jayme (new)

Jayme (jayme-reads) I've noticed that. I only started collecting vegan ones two years ago and it was really easy to get all the ones that interested me. Now I feel like there's no hope of getting all the great stuff that's coming out. Not that that's a bad thing!

message 31: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) Ah, I just realized you can make comments at reviews at Cookbooker!!! I'd seen you could vote for reviews, but didn't notice until just now that comments can be made too.

Yes, that's how I found out. When I went to the front page I saw the comments the two of you have made. It's a great site, and I'm happy that so many vegan recipes are being reviewed and commented on.

Jayme (jayme-reads) It IS fun! I'm really glad I found this group and that website. I've been cooking and baking even more than I usually do because all the stuff I read about I want to try!

It's nice to cook just for yourself too. I often want to try something new but my family demands an old favourite or something simple.

message 38: by Betsy (new)

Betsy Dijulio | 160 comments Lee, my husband jokes that if he likes something I make, he'll never see it again because I'm on to the next new recipe. I will see that I have been making my Beet Muhummara over and over this summer. Our local market must have left their beets underground or in a cold cellar as we still have them in late July!

Betsy Dijulio | 160 comments Jayme wrote: "It can't last forever. I'm running out of people to feed!"

I so know what you meant, Jayme. It's just my husband and I and he's not vegan. So, I create new recipes all the time and during the year, I can test them on my students! But, in the summer, I have to get a little more resourceful. Yesterday, I invited a teacher friend over for lunch. It so easy to think we're too busy, but I called him on a whim, he was free, and we both just made time to connect--very pleasant and a very important thing to do in this digital age!

Your students must love you Betsy!

Thankfully my husband is a human garbage can. There are never leftovers going to waste around here. I think I need more local friends to practice new dishes on.

I would bring in "critique treats" for our advanced placement critique days and, once, a student emailed me the night before to remind me! Food is a great way to MAKE local friends--ha! Yesterday afternoon was so nice: too impromptu and separate visits from two friends who got to taste test. Will post and share soon! Where is that comfort food thread? One is perfect for that!

Rachel (petalpower) | 393 comments Oh! I just saw this thread for Cookbooker!
This is fabulous!
I have been WISHING for something like this for a long time. Yes, I do have sticky notes all over my cookbooks. And I wanted a way to easily keep track of which recipes I have tried, from which cookbooks. Preferably online so it wouldn't get lost and I can access it from anywhere. I was thinking of creating a recipe blog, but this web site is much better than anything I could have come up with. I love that in enables me to connect with other people like you ladies, and chat about the recipes, etc. And it allows you to upload photos of your recipe creations, too. Wonderful!

I signed up for cookbooker today.
My username is: calicokitten

Awesome! It's been a lifesaver for me.

I found you and added you to my favourite users so I'll be able to see what you're cooking!

I only blog a fraction of the recipes I try so it's really useful for reviews, ratings and also private notes about recipes. I also use it to search for a particular type of recipe within my books. I can type "tomato soup" in the search function and it will pull up all the tomato soup recipes in my cookbooks. Or at least the ones that have been indexed.

message 47: by Lisa (new)

Lisa Vegan (lisavegan) I added you too Rachel. I *think* I'm following everyone in this group who participates there. I hope I am. I rarely remember to check that site though so thanks for the reminder to check in more often. It's a cool site.
