Can anyone recommend a novel to me that is "like" The Kite Runner, in that it is very closely based on the author's experience growing up but has been fictionalized? I need to be able to go on-line and see independent third-party reviews so I can decide what to read. I am looking for successful models of this type of fiction for a novel I am editing for a client (thebookcharmer.com)

Have you tried A Thousand Splendid Suns by the same author?

Some other books with similar themes:

1. West of Kabul, East of New York by Tamim Ansary

2. Earth and Ashes by Atiq Rahimi

3. Swallows of Kabul by Yasmin Khadra [pseudonym of Algerian army officer, Mohammed Moulessehoul]

4. The Reluctant Fundamentalist by Mohsin Hamid

5. A Case of Exploding Mangoes by Mohammed Hanif [not exactly similar in theme but fictionalised account of true events]

6. The God of Small Things by Arundhati Roy

7. The Inheritance of Loss by Kiran Desai

8. The Space Between Us by Thrity Umrigar.

9. Women of Sand and Myrrh: A Novel by Hanan Al-Shaykh

10. Mornings in Jenin by Susan Abulhawa

Hope you find what you are looking for in these!

cheers,
kitty

another book would be: Kabul beauty school. the author (who is a beautician) goes their as a member of a humanity relief group then decides to open a salon and a beauty school for Afghan women so they can make a living.
it is an amazing story.

Maybe Three Cups of Tea a real life account of a man opening schools in Afghanistan.

In the Country of Men - its an older book, but set in Libya during the time that Qaddafi came into power and told through the eyes of a 10 year old

Ahmad K. Minkara Hisham Matar is a great author. His second book Anatomy of Disappearance is definitely worthy of reading too!
