Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments HMWY: Summer Reads
Sun is shining, the weather is sweet, yeah Make you wanna move your dancing feet now To the rescue, here I am .... ~ Bob Marley

So, Summer's here and the time is right for dancin' in the street... LOL Sorry, songs just keep poppin' in my head.

As I was singing saying, summer's here and everyone's chattin' about "What are your hot summer reads?" Well, I'd love to hear those too, but I'd also like to know ... do you have a specific type of book you look forward to reading while lounging in the sun or do you read the same type of books and anything read from June - August becomes a "summer read" only because you read it in the summer?

(PS: Don't forget your sunscreen!)

message 2: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments My summer reads are the same as my year-round ones! This summer, I'm looking forward to (and slowly getting!) some long-anticipated releases!

message 3: by [deleted user] (new)

I'm pretty much the same. I read the same books year round although there usually is 1 or 2(who am i kidding it's more like 10 or 20!) new releases that come out in the summer that I just have to read and since my dog tore a muscle in his leg there will be more time outside sitting then outside playing/walking.

message 4: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments I am sorry about your dog! That sounds painful.

message 5: by [deleted user] (new)

He is quite a little champ he never made a peep when he did it. Silly thing just wanted to keep playing :) I'm hoping in a couple of weeks we can start talking short walks again to get the muscle working again but right now it's all about rest and relaxing which is really hard with a hyper active dog!! lol

message 6: by Regina (new)

Regina (reginar) | 2883 comments Oh I hope so! OT but 4 yrs ago we rescued a dog and then found out he needed knee surgery. :( but as soon 4 months after thr surgery he was back to normal!

message 7: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Ah, Kat, sorry 'bout your doggie. Hope he has a speedy recovery.

I'm the same. I read what I read when I read it. So, if it's summertime at the time ok, if not, ok. :)

message 8: by Lisa M (new)

Lisa M (lamessegee) | 171 comments Do PNR/UF releases follow the cycle of increased releases for summer? I.e. beach reads? I know that there are a lot of new PNR releases in June that I'm interested in, but I don't know if that's just coincidence.

message 9: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments I think perhaps the only differnce in my summertime reading is that I have more hours of sunlight in which to read in. :) Yeah, longer days!

I read earlier in the day in the summer because of early sunrise....
I read whatever whenever....

Yes, all books do for the reason you mention -beach/holiday reads and before Christmas too but that's usually just biographies, humour and children's books for gifts, at least in the UK.

message 12: by [deleted user] (new)

Hey! *poke* You do have members in the Southern Hemisphere, you know! And I'm freezing my ass off here.

My winter reads definitely tend to be darker and more challenging. I think I tend more towards PNR in summer because they're so light and undemanding. Hmm...never analysed that before, but I think that's right.

I almost always re-read Gormenghast in winter, even though I don't really like it. It just fits the season somehow.

message 13: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments LOL! Sorry, Moss. I hadn't intentionally skipped over those in far south dealing with winter vs. summer. ;)

message 14: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments I'm not really experiencing summer here if it makes you feel better Moss. We don't have that season here. We get 2 weeks of sun (rarely hot enough to claim full summer status) and 50 weeks of rain.

And people wonder at why the weather is not a detterent in my plans to visit Scotland. All the joys of home + men with sexy accents. Yum!

Lizz (Beer, Books and Boos) | 1193 comments @~♥ Kat ♥~ my neighbor's dog chases balls and wont stop. So last year he hurt his foot and leg ,but wont stop chasing the ball.

I'm going to stick with genre I read all year maybe add one or two new genres

Dude. I would kill myself.

2 weeks of sun?

message 17: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Seriously! I'm with you Moss. We could pull a you first, no me first, just DO IT! LOL! That's why you'll never find me livin' anywhere near or like Seattle, WA. Very nice to visit, but too dark and rainy for me. I may be fair-skinned, but I need the sun to survive.

message 18: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments The 2 weeks may have been a tiny stretch but not much. :) I live about 3 hours south of Seattle so you know what I mean.

The issue really isn't that there is no sun, it just won't stay long enough for you to make plans. We specialize in "Today's forcast is for partly cloudy with a chance of rain."

Our favorite phrase in the PNW is, "If you don't like the weather just wait 15 minutes...it will change."

**Disclaimer: We do not guarantee that your weather selection will last, only that it will change.**

message 19: by [deleted user] (new)

Hehehe

I know what you mean. We have some islands down south that only have the one forecast.

@Steph: you know, the whole time I was watching Twilight (oh my GOD I just came out on the internet) I sat there wishing they would let the sun come out for five minutes already. And then they did, and he sparkled, so I shot myself.

But yeah, Pacific Northwest, damn.

message 20: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments That phrase is similar to what we said in Hawaii. I know, you're saying, sheesh girl, it's Hawaii, what's to whine about?! I'm not complaining at all (or didn't then). We'd say, "If you don't like the weather here, drive 15 minutes and it'll change." It was always raining somewhere on the island, but also gorgeous just a few miles up/down the road. :)

message 21: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments LMAO Moss! So, I'm taking you'd never read the books pre-movie? Yeah, I was wondering how they'd show his oh so girlie glow. That series should'a stayed a book, no movie, IMO. But, can't blame Steph (nice name, copy cat) for goin' where the $$ is.

message 22: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Ahhhh, Forks! Another WA state, 'not part of any solar system' legacy! My, but aren't we proud. :)

I have a dear friend who is Hawaiian and I loved visiting her family. Man, what a funny culture! Her father's side of the family was all 1/2 Hawaiian and 1/2 New Jersey(it's own land IMO)...they were a scream! I never knew that Jersey attitude could run on 'island time'. :)

message 23: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments LOL!

Definitely unique! I hope to retire there. I left a piece of my heart in Hawaii.

message 24: by [deleted user] (new)

Oh Hawaii, it's such a dream destination for me. You're so lucky to have lived there Steph, I've always fantasised about a holiday there. You'd think it'd be a piece of cake living in the Pacific and all but the flights there are completely exorbitant.

No, had never even heard of the books pre-movie, and then ended up reading all four like a demon. If it's confession time I may as well lay it all out eh?

*Btw, when I said before I was coming out after reading Twilight I in no way meant to be derogatory about coming out as a gay person. I meant to be derogatory about coming out as a Twilight reader. Just to be completely clear. And don't hurt me! Because I am one of you. Sparkles!

message 25: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments I think it's expensive to fly there no matter where you live, least that's what we've found when trying to return for a visit.

LOL! I don't think you need to worry about that, Moss. I'm sure everyone understood your meaning. :)

message 26: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Playing catch up...I'm a PNW girl, too. BUT, grew up on the other side of the mountains! It was like 300 days of full sunshine, with "cloudy, possible showers later on" for the rest of the time! I loved moving to the green, moist side of the state! Though I'm glad to live somewhere with more sunshine (usually!) now!

message 27: by Dana (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Same here Judithe! Grew up on the eastern side myself only in OR. Like about 1 1/2 hours from P Briggs. :)

You did better than I on adjusting to the rain. It took me a year or two to really 'like' it. Now when I visit my hometown, I nearly bake with the heat! 90 degrees? What?

message 28: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Oh...I so understand that! But I LOVE dry heat! It never gets to 90 here, but the humidity factor...grrr....it makes it feel much hotter! Well...at least NO dry skin in the summer!

message 29: by Dana (last edited Jun 22, 2011 02:12AM) (new)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Very true on the dry skin thing, although I have met people that think there is no humidity at all here on the west side.

I was opening up a new office for this company I used to work for and all the IT fellas came to my corner of the world for the 'big setup'. They were all from Florida though so they thought the weather was super dry. On the morning of the second day, I had this conversation with the comm guy (who was like this 6'5" Italian guy from Jersey and looked exactly like Steven Segal-ponytail and everything). He was complaining about how he used up all the complimentary lotion in his hotel room and had to call for more. It was too funny listening to this big man with the accent, "I couldn't believe it, ya know? My skin just kept drinkin' it up like I was a freakin' sponge or somethin'! I just couldn't moisturize enough I tell ya."

I couldn't help but laugh right in his face! Nothing worse than a man without dewy skin. ;D

Funny, that's exactly what we say of Melbourne. LOL.

Sandra | 25908 comments Well, I think we can all be jealous of Moss, cause I think it was this week she was going to Fiji for a holiday!

message 33: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Oh oh oh...I wanna go, too!! Whenever it is, have a fun Fiji-holiday, Moss!!! *waves Bon Voyage/Happy Skies/or whatever is the correct phrase!*

message 34: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Yep, color me jealous :) ENJOY, Moss!

message 35: by Johanna (last edited Jun 22, 2011 03:19AM) (new)

Johanna | 25 comments Hi girls! I read your summer/winter/sun/rain discussion and really enjoyed it! :) I live quite near the Arctic Circle, so this time of year is definitely the best for reading (all night long) *grin*... It's so bright outside 24/7. Don't have anything against the dark winter days, log-fire, hot cocoa and a good book, though... *another grin*

Anyway, the time of the year doesn't really affect the type of the books I read. It's only the amount that varies. Like we all, I tend to read more when I have my vacation. Like you girls, I'm waiting for couple of new releases (for example The Rebel and An Irresistible Bachelor by J. R. Ward, Deeper Than Midnight by Lara Adrian and Taken By Fire by Sydney Croft) to come out.

I've also kind of "saved" GhosTV and Hunt the Moon for the summer to be read slooooowly with time and care (because they are the latest of those great series)!

Happy reading everyone! :)

message 36: by Steph, Serious series addict (new)

Steph (angel4492) | 32706 comments Wow, Johanna. I don't know how I'd do in a place where the sun never set. Or never rose, for that matter. My Uncle and his family experience those odd days/nights in Alaska and they love it.

message 37: by Judithe, Soap Operas never end.... (new)

Judithe | 6566 comments Hmmm...it would definitely be an interesting experience! I guess you'd get used to it. Though I have a LOT of trouble going to sleep while the sun is still up (an oddity living in a land where many people claim their "hobby" is SLEEPING!)

Dana (erato) | 922 comments Sandra wrote: "Well, I think we can all be jealous of Moss, cause I think it was this week she was going to Fiji for a holiday!"

Oh Moss...enjoy! Enjoy! ENJOY!! What fun! have a lovely, cool, fruity drink for me. *or three* ;D

message 39: by Johanna (last edited Jun 23, 2011 03:02AM) (new)

Johanna | 25 comments @Steph and Judithe: It's definitely true that the bright summer nights aren't suitable for everyone. I know a lot of Finnish people who need thick, dark curtains in their bedrooms in order to sleep during the summertime and the midnight sun. I'm not one of them, but unfortunately my husband is... although over the time I have learnt to take advantage of that fact... ;)
