Aruana | 248 comments I've just finished A Vengeful Passion by Lynne Graham.

I am soooo enjoying these older books. This one was amazing and Vito was amazing. She was a bit of a shrew at times, but her past sort of explained it.

Loved it!

I'm moving on to The Contaxis Baby by Lynne Graham.

Leona (wdwcbm) | 373 comments Just finished..

Lost in Love ***** 5 stars...WOW WOW...one of Michelle Reid's best works!

The Greek Tycoon's Virgin Wife 3.5 stars..silly title, but one of HB's better reads

Silence Speaks for Love 2 stars. Really felt the author lacked total sensitivity and mishandled the topic of being mute.

Romance Lover (demetrahp) | 88 comments I'm curently reading In Christofides' Keeping (Modern) by Abby Green which is soooooo boring! It's a little worst than the prequel Bride in a Gilded Cage (Harlequin Presents) by Abby Green . I recently find Abby Green's books very... flat.

Virginia (goodreadscomginny) | 264 comments Finished[book:The Duke's Wife|1586405 An enjoyable read even if I did not like the hero at the beginning. He felt his word was sacred and the h did not have anything to say. He was fourteen years older than she so he probably felt he was her father. It was a marriage of convenience for him and to have thehprovede his heir. She did so rather quickly and after the birth he moved out of her bed. She knew that he was continuing his affair with the other woman so he had no need to sleep with the h. .a lot of tension on her part because she loves him. Me he must get her to act as a loving couple to put an end to the rumors of a divorce. Interesting how he changes his attitude towards her. Ahold read.

Virginia (goodreadscomginny) | 264 comments The Marriage Debt? I do not always like Emma Darcy but hiked this one.Shannon left Devin soon after she lost he baby. She s film director and he does not understand her artsy friends. She feels he does not love her so goodbye,Devin. When she needs financial backing for a movie that she wants to do, her last resort is Devin. He will back her film if she moves back with him for a time as his wife. I liked both the h and H.

A very enjoyaable read Princess From the Past by Caitlin Crews really liked this one. The pages were hot with passion and tension because the h and H could not keep their hands off each other.

Strange in a good way, or strange in a bad way?

message 583: by Aruana (new)

Aruana | 248 comments Kate, good story, but a bit of false advertising as far as I'm concerned. I dunno. So way off the Modern format.

The same with Miranda Lee's Contract with Consequences. The hereo volutneers to give the heroine a baby, not by artificial insemination, but the "old" way! Great story, but again, not a Modern.

I love my tycoons, billionaires, princes, sheikhs, counts etc. To me, these guys are part of the Modern theme of books. Not a bloody geologist and rancher! To me those are more like Silhouette Desires or something.

Mills & Boon used to have a related line, Modern Heat, that was published together with the Moderns. Then they did away with the Modern Heat line and replaced it with the Riva line. Then they couldn't figure out whether Riva was a good idea and I think they now just market those as Modern instead. In the US market, those are marketed under the Harlequin Presents Extra Line.

The Modern Heat/Riva/HPE lines have a more contemporary feel to them, with more contemporary heroes and storylines. That means the heroines won't always be virgins and the heroes have more modern sensitivities and more diverse jobs than the standard Modern Greek or Italian tycoon. That may not be for the ladies who like their classic Harleys.

For me, I quite enjoy the Modern Heat/Riva/HPE line because I just enjoy the more flirty, contemporary feel to them. The heroines also tend to be more independent and are less prone to be afflicted with the "too stupid to live" syndrome so common for the classic Modern heroine.

I actually quite enjoyed Contract with Consequences and really liked the hero. I do agree that it does really have a different feel from the more classic storylines, though.

message 586: by Kate (new)

Kate (kateperegrinate) I'm pretty much in agreement with Lulu. I like the Modern Heat/RIVA/HPE books because they actually feel more "modern" than the Modern/HP books. In a way, I think they are maybe going back to the roots of HP. I've read complaints from the vintage HP readers about the books moving away from the 70s era white-collar-but-not-a-millionaire heroes to the ultra-wealthy heroes in the 80s and 90s. Maybe the are course correcting a little bit?

Personally, I like the heroes that are rich enough to not have to worry about money but not so wealthy that they are complete jerks who think they can give her a new wardrobe and jewelry to buy her love. I want a hero that has money because he built something, made something, invented something -- not just because was a whiz at the stock market with the $10 he had in his pocket when his parents abandoned him.

Thanks for the explanation. We do actually get Riva here in South Africa. I just don't expect this type of trope from these two writers.

Aruana | 248 comments I've just finished one of Lynne Graham's older books and I've started The Winter Bride (Harlequin Presents, #1989) by Lynne Graham . Can anyone seriously explain to me how these older books are so much better than the new ones? I cannot believe this is the same writer. I still like her books and she is a automatic read for me, but wow, these old ones ..............

Serious question!

They really look modern!

Bytheway: Do the Riva's count, when you read them for the HP challenge if they are previously published as Harlequin presents?

I count the Rivas, Kouk. To me, they are all part and parcel of the Harlequin Presents/Modern line even though they are marketed differently.

message 591: by Kate (new)

Kate (kateperegrinate) Riva books are published in the US under Harlequin Presents Extra or Harlequin Romance. If the Riva is published as a Harlequin Presents or Harlequin Presents Extra, it counts for the challenges in this group. If it was published as a Harlequin Romance (usually those that have sex behind closed doors), it wouldn't. Nicola Marsh is the only author I know that has had Riva books published in both Harlequin lines. The Riva authors that I've found that seem to be exclusively published as Harlequin Romance are:
Barbara Hannay
Jessica Hart
Fiona Harper
Nina Harrington
Nikki Logan
Jackie Braun
Shirley Jump
Jackie Braun
Liz Fielding

I blame Harlequin, not the writers. They push them to write for modern sensibilities, forgetting that it's the style of the older books that got them (and kept) their fans.

Cassie (boocluvr) | 24 comments After reading some good books like dark side of desire by M. Reid, and Delanys Desert Sheikh by Brenda Jackson I was severely disappointed in the dark side of desire by Julia James. The story lacked dialogue that was necessary to the story and just seemed so bland. The older dark side of desire by M. Reid was very good. After reading all the posts about older HPs I felt that I had to give it a try. The only problem I had with the book is the fact that the H hit the h. I can deal with the older books version with less technology and actually that adds to the romance because it forces more one-on-one time but the hitting, I can't condone. So ladies, I'm on the hunt for a better book to lift my disappointed spirits.

Hm . . . . We seem to have very different tastes in books, but if you enjoyed MR's Dark Side of Desire, you might like The Spaniard's Marriage Bargain by Abby Green. Maybe also try Her Last Night of Innocence (Mills & Boon Modern )/The Secret She Can't Hide by India Grey and The Scorsolini Marriage Bargain by Lucy Monroe. I haven't read too many by Jennie Lucas, but I think her books seem to have the same kind of dramatic passion to them.

Some others you may want to try:

The Lost Wife Maggie Cox.

The S Before Ex Mira Lyn Kelly.

The Sheikh's Ransomed Bride (Surrender to the Sheikh) Annie West.

Forgotten Mistress, Secret Love-Child (Regally Wed) Annie West.

The Savakis Mistress Annie West.

Lost in Love Michelle Reid.

The Ultimate Betrayal Michelle Reid.

The Sheikh's Chosen Wife Michelle Reid.

Craving Jamie Emma Darcy (childhood friends).

Lovers Not Friends Helen Brooks.

If you haven't tried an Annie West book yet, must give her a try!

On the lighter side of things, you seem to like Heidi Rice, so you may want to try
On the First Night of Christmas.

I've considered this question before also. I think that a lot of times authors are just tired of writing and the well is dry. Honestly how can you keep coming up with good fresh ideas for 20 years or more? Especially with the numbers of books some writers put out? Dead lines have to play into this also. This happens not just to category romance writers but to anyone who is coming out with a book or more a year.
