Barbara Oh good, Ann, I thought you would be interested in this. The part that still stays with me, and gives me the chills, is the detachment he gave his characters. I know I posted about that in the discussion so won't beat a dead horse, but it really affected me.

I keep watching for a new book by Alarcón. I have his website bookmarked but, so far, haven't seen anything. He spends a lot of time promoting South American writers. He does have a collection of short stories, published before this novel, entitled War by Candlelight.

Ann D Barb,
I would like to read more of Alarcon as well, but I don't do well with short stories. If I like them, I always feel frustrated that there isn't more. Hopefully, he will get around to another novel.

Sherry, I noticed the surreal quality only in the beginning. Once I got caught up in the story, I bought it all. I liked his descriptions and writing very much. I didn't agree with those who thought it was overdone.

When I read books about countries where there is so much political oppression, I feel very lucky to be an American - in spite of all my complaining about the current administration! Stability, coupled with the possibility of change, is so valuable. I am also reading Obama's The Audacity of Hope, so perhaps you can tell where my sympathies lie.

Ann

Barbara I'm on Alarcón’s email list and I have his website bookmarked so I should know pretty soon after he has a new novel out. Will be sure to let everyone know. Thus far, from reading his updates, he's spending so much time on a journal of South American writing that he edits that I would guess it is interfering with his writing time.

Barbara Alarcón just sent out this email today. I thought some of you might be interested:
